Dead & Company Will Play in Charlotte, Donate $100,000 to HRC & Equality NC June 3, 2016 11:47
With Dead & Company's highly anticipated summer tour scheduled to kick off next Friday, June 10th, in Charlotte, NC, thousands of fans have anxiously awaited to hear whether or not the band would join the likes of Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen in canceling their shows in North Carolina. Dead & Company has announced that rather than cancelling it's Charlotte show in protest of the infamous HB2 bill and depriving their fans, the band will instead be donating $100,000 to The Human Rights Campaign and Equality North Carolina. They also announced that they will host a "participation row" section of "local organizations fighting discrimination and national organizations dedicated to voter registration and protecting the planet.
See below for the band's official statement:
This March, when North Carolina lawmakers passed HB2 and Governor Pat McCrory signed it into law, we categorically objected to it. We had hoped that by now this abhorrent law would have been repealed. Sadly, it has not.
After much thought, consideration and conversation, we feel the most effective way to move forward is to perform as scheduled in Charlotte, North Carolina on June 10 and to donate $100,000.00 to organizations engaged in this battle for justice – the Human Rights Campaign and Equality North Carolina.
Additionally, we will assemble a "Participation Row" social action area, where we'll host local organizations fighting discrimination and national organizations dedicated to voter registration and protecting the planet. Every fan in attendance will have an opportunity to learn about the true ramifications of the HB2 law, and take meaningful action by registering to vote; to that end we are working on an online community registration site that will assist the HeadCount organization in promoting and simplifying voter registration.
Dead shows have always been a safe place for all of our audience to come together through music no matter how they appear or self-identify. History shows these values of openness and inclusiveness have served us - and the world around us - well.
We’ve never been a band that’s spoken many words when we’re on stage. But we hope that our actions, and the actions of our fans, will ring louder than ever before.
With Love and Respect,
Dead & Company

Happy Birthday Cactus: Five Classic Mike Gordon Jams June 3, 2016 09:43
We make a point to recognize and celebrate the birthdays of our favorite musicians, as a way of thanking them for their endless contributions to our music scene. We can't think of a better way to honor Mike Gordon on his 51st birthday than running through a handful of our favorite Cactus originals. While longtime Phish lyricist Tom Marshall is responsible for the lyrics on a large percentage of the band's originals, Gordon is the mastermind behind classics such as “BBFCFM,” “Catapult,” "Clone,” “Contact,” “Destiny Unbound,” “Fuck Your Face,” “Mike’s Song,” "Mock Song.” “Mound,” “NO2,” “Poor Heart,” "Round Room,” “Scent of a Mule,” “Simple,” “Train Song,” “Weekly Time,” and “Weigh”. We have included a few of our favorite versions of these tunes below.
Cheers to you Cactus...may you celebrate many, many more!

Jammin' In The Ham with Kyle Holly & Charlie Thornton of Modern Measure June 2, 2016 23:23

Interview by Jordan Kirkland: Live & Listen
As we prepare for the upcoming weekend at Jam In The Ham at Zydeco in Birmingham, we are sitting down with several of this year's performers to learn a little more about this year's lineup. Next up is Kyle Holly and Charlie Thornton of Modern Measure, a wildly talented electronic duo you don't want to miss out on. Modern Measure is scheduled to perform on Friday night at 1:00 AM.
Modern Measure is a hybrid electronic project like none other. Infusing live organic instrumentation with artfully crafted music production is what sets them apart. Modern Measure was formed in the musical hotbed of Atlanta, GA in 2013. Coming off of sold out performances at Terminal West in ATL, to touring nationally all across the United States, Modern Measure stays true to art and music. Kyle Holly (Live Drums/Music Production) and Charlie Thornton (Bass Guitar, Music Production) keep the party up at all times. Taking inspiration from around the world, along with Electronica, Hip Hop, Rap, Funk, and Rock influences, it all blends meticulously.
In just a short time, Modern Measure has shared the stage with friends and renowned artists such as STS9, Big Gigantic, The Disco Biscuits, ZOOGMA, Manic Focus, The Floozies, The New Deal, and Turbo Suit. With the help of their label, 1320Records, they continue to push the bar releasing original material, alongside remixes from very respected artists that continually inspire the band.
Modern Measure has performed at music festivals across the country such as Camp Bisco, Suwannee Hulaween, North Coast Music Festival, Summer Camp Music Festival, Summer Set Music Festival, Counterpoint Music Festival, and Euphoria Music Festival just to name a few. Get familiar, get comfortable, and lock yourselves in. Modern Measure is a name you will continue to see in music for years to come.

Much has happened since the formation of Modern Measure in Atlanta in 2013. Your sound continues to evolve, with a tremendous amount of music coming from just two guys. How do you guys go about creating original music in such a unique way?
Kyle: We really are inspired by everything. We take influences from different points in our lives and translate it into what we're producing. Charlie will start a track, or I will start a track, and we'll just go with it. As time has progressed, we have collected a lot of instruments and samples that's helping the production grow tremendously.
Charlie: We tend to start tracks individually in Ableton and bounce ideas back and forth. After working in the studio on the last record, the approach to our production is changing and growing. We are trying to start doing more in studio production and conceptualize the next album.
Let's talk about the first full-length Modern Measure album, Epicenter, due out this Friday (June 3rd). How long has this collection of songs been in the works, and how has the recording process differed from your past experiences in the studio?
Kyle: We started producing the tracks really in depth fall of 2015. We got Montage and Riddle about 80% done in November, and started to test them out in the sets at our live shows. We were on tour with STS9 at that point in time, so those crowds really dug the melodic elements of those particular tracks. We decided in January of this year to go Muscle Shoals to record at the old Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, now known as Cypress Moon Productions. It was a 3 day long affair and we spent the night inside Studio A doing as much work as we could. We hadn't really done anything like that until that point. It was a total lock in. It was a lot of fun.
Charlie: Everything before now has been produced from home or from one our practice spaces that we have had. These are the first tracks we had help recording and producing the acoustic drums. Behind The Light had drums but we produced them ourselves. We also added bass guitar this time around. We plan to keep expanding these live elements. We will be adding saxophone to some of the newest stuff as I have brought that to the stage for almost a year now.
Watch Modern Measure's official music video for "Riddle" here:
As the Modern Measure's demand continues to grow, the schedule will only get busier. Have your touring plans been any different thus far in 2016? How do you go about finding that balance between life on the road and life at home?
Kyle: The balance for me is just music. If we're on the road, we're playing music live. If we're at home, we're working on music. I enjoy being home because it allows me to be able to work on new things. I also enjoy being on the road playing shows and us connecting with people. That's really what it's all about.
Charlie: We are playing some of the same festivals but many different ones than last summer. Sometimes the balance can be tough. Most of my production is done from home or in our studio, so I'm making moves to get my mobile set up optimized so I can produce more on the road. This way we will be able to work on and put out more new material.
We're coming up on this weekend's Jam In The Ham in Birmingham. This two-day festival showcases a great deal of young talent from across Alabama and beyond. While Atlanta is home, you certainly have deep roots in Alabama. What do you feel this lineup says about the current music scene in this region?
Kyle: Alabama is very much home for us as well. Birmingham is one of our favorite cities to play to be completely honest. There's an energy there right now, and we've felt it the last three or four times we've played. I think the lineup is great, and showcases multiple genres that kind of quenches everyone's thirst musically. I'm excited to catch Daily Bread again. He's a great producer.
Charlie: Birmingham is still like a home to me as I went to school there and have many friends in the area. Many of the artists on this lineup I have personally seen become producers over the last few years. Many on the line up are bands that I have seen for years, even before I was a part of Modern Measure. There is definitely a solid music scene in Alabama that will continue to grow.
While many fans of Modern Measure will be on hand this weekend, many may be seeing you perform for the first time. How would you best describe what those an attendance can expect from you guys on Friday night?
Kyle: There will definitely be some new songs, and get ready for a healthy dose of saxophone. Our dude Seth Hanna will be in the house on lights too. He adds so much to the show.
Charlie: We are going to bring numerous elements to the stage. I will be bringing sax, bass, and keys and Kyle will be playing drums. We will be playing many genres of electronic music like future bass, jamtronica, and drum n bass. We plan on keeping the energy levels as high as possible. Don't forget to bring your dancing shoes!
In addition to the upstairs and downstairs stages, Jam In The Ham will also provide a special collaboration stage this weekend. Will you guys have a chance to take part in any collaboration with other artists performing?
Kyle: If there's time, we love collaborating with other artists. One of our favorite guitarists, David Wright, lives in Birmingham so you may see him with us this weekend.
Charlie: I would be surprised if we didn't take the time to hit the collab stage for a couple jams with friends.
Before we wrap things up, is there anything coming up in the second half of 2016 that has you guys particularly excited?
Kyle: We have some announcements that haven't been made yet that we're really excited about. We also have some stuff in the works this fall with some amazing artists that we really look up to and respect. There will also be more new music coming this fall.
Charlie: Without saying too much, I am looking forward to hitting some water slides again this summer. We definitely have a bunch of songs on reserve that I am excited to be releasing the second half of this year too.

Jammin' In The Ham with Max Millwood of Winston Ramble June 1, 2016 08:42

Interview by Jordan Kirkland: Live & Listen
As we prepare for the upcoming weekend at Jam In The Ham at Zydeco in Birmingham, we are sitting down with several of this year's performers to learn a little more about this year's lineup. Next up is Max Millwood of Winston Ramble, one of the hottest young bands in Alabama. Winston Ramble is scheduled to perform on Saturday night at 12:00 AM.
Based in Birmingham, Alabama, Winston Ramble is a homegrown, acoustic, folk-rock band. With members originally hailing from the free state of Winston County, AL, the band aims to interject the raw expression of rock-n-roll into the feel-good vibes of acoustic music.
The sound of an an old southern soul hits you right out of the gate. Drew "Ben" Benefield's vocals are soulful and still gritty. Combine that with some mandolin twang, big country bends, and church-like harmonies and you're listening to a mix between a classic rock band and a gospel bluegrass quartet. Yet, the acoustically driven tunes carry a funky, sometimes psychedelic, but ultimately, and undeniable rock n' roll vibe.

Let's get started with the early days of Winston Ramble. You guys have been going strong for four years now. How did this band get started, and how has it continued to evolve since then?
Max: We all grew up together so that's the most important aspect, but Winston Ramble started out as an acoustic duo of Ben (Drew Benefiled) on guitar, Justin (Oliver) on mandolin, and Justin's brother Cody sitting in on cajón. About that time, the band I was in had stopped playing together. I randomly got a call from Ben asking if Coty (West) and I could sit in for one show. When we got together to practice, Jud (Mize) happened to be there, and he sat in too.
It started by accident really. I thought it was gonna be one show...we'd have fun and be done. Now looking back, it's sort of crazy how it turned out. We've been extremely blessed as a band, with help from a lot of other musicians in Birmingham and really cool venues giving us a chance. They definitely gave us our start.
In the last few years, we've gone from strictly playing bars every other weekend to a full schedule including festivals. Jam in the Ham is a perfect example. Again, we've been blessed with good management and a lot of help from others. I think it's a real exciting time for us.
Watch Winston Ramble perform "Dreams" here:
While the band is generally an acoustic, folk rock band, your music is also described as carrying "a funky, sometimes psychedelic, but ultimately an undeniable rock n' roll vibe." Is the band's diverse sound something that comes natural, or do you make a conscious effort to mix things up?
Max: Our sound really comes from the different influences that we all have. Anywhere from Skynyrd, Tom Petty, and the Grateful Dead, to gospel and bluegrass. When we write a song or learn a cover, we try not to map every little thing out. We really just wait to get together and see what we all can come up with. That's the way to have the most fun, I think most of our sound comes from the fact that we try not to expect anything specific
As the Winston Ramble's demand continues to grow, the schedule will only get busier. What has the band's approach been towards touring in 2016? Do you guys have a certain amount of shows you'd like to hit for the year?
Max: We play a lot of shows, but we all like that. We don't have specific number to shoot for. In the last few months, we've had more options on bigger gigs, which is where you want to be. Festivals and shows with bands we know is where we have the most fun, and it helps get your name out there when your not playing the same bar every week. So its a win win. Again, we've been blessed with a great manager, Alex Cape. He's great at what he does and Winston Ramble wouldn't be where we are without him.

We're coming up on this weekend's Jam In The Ham in Birmingham. This two-day festival showcases a great deal of young talent from across Alabama and beyond. How does an event such as this impact the current Alabama music scene?
Max: Birmingham is great place for music and aspiring musicians. There many venues that will give you a chance to get started. That being said, some of the best bands, not just in Alabama, but from anywhere are playing this weekend...so I know its gonna be a blast. There's a ton of talent that will be there and we're looking forward to it. It's great for Birmingham cause your never see all these bands in one spot. I can't wait.
Many of the bands most loyal fans will be in attendance this weekend. How would you best describe what Winston Ramble has planned for the big weekend ahead?
Max: We are very excited to be playing in one of the venues that gave us our start with all these other great musicians. We definitely have a surprise in store, so I hope all the Ramble fans make it out to see something new.
Watch Winston Ramble perform "As Long As I Can See The Light" here:
Max: We love to collaborate...mixing styles and coming up with something unexpected is what we're about. I'm sure we will be right in the mix.
Before we wrap things up, is there anything coming up in the second half of 2016 that has the band particularly excited?
Max: Really just having the opportunity to play festivals is enough to be excited about. We just finished with the Acoustic Cafe Festival, which was one of the best experiences I've ever had as a musician. But we're looking forward to and hoping for new things to keep happening this year.

Jammin' In The Ham with Kris Gottlieb of CBDB May 31, 2016 09:23
As we prepare for the upcoming weekend at Jam In The Ham at Zydeco in Birmingham, we are sitting down with several of this year's performers to learn a little more about this year's lineup. It only seems appropriate to kick things off with Kris Gottlieb of CBDB, one of the hottest young bands in Alabama. CBDB is scheduled to perform on Saturday night at 12:30 AM.
CBDB is a progressive rock/jam band formed in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, whose stock is rising fast. Fresh off the release of their third album, entitled The FAME EP, they are seeing a pattern of snowballing momentum with large, energetic crowds hungry for their unique brand of progressive jam-rock, dubbed "Joyfunk". CBDB blends soulful vocals and virtuosic instrumentation with smart, tasteful songwriting resulting in a sound that can be enjoyed by the casual listener and audiophile alike. On stage, they parade tight, ambitious compositions that seamlessly gives way to loose, adventurous improvisation and have quickly become a must-see act.

So CBDB got started about five years ago in Tuscaloosa. Tell me a little bit about the bands early days, how you got started, and how the band has progressed to where it is today.
Kris: Well, Cy and I met in Tuscaloosa at a place called The Bear Trap and jammed a bit. I was in a band with Glenn (Dillard) at the time, so he came in as well. He was actually just playing sax at the time. David (Ray) and Paul (Oliver) came around a little later, maybe early 2012 and late 2013. That kind of finalized the lineup.
I’m guessing you guys were playing the bar scene and fraternity houses pretty heavily early on, and things started taking off from there?
Kris: Yeah, really just trying to stay busy playing, cutting our teeth, and honing the craft in much of 2011 and 2012, you know? And really, you never stop learning, so we are still doing that today. In a place like Tuscaloosa, you can play 4 or 5 nights a week in different places. You can do different things each time and really stay busy. We ultimately got to a point that we realized that this was something we should really pursue, because it’s something unique that we truly enjoy.
People seem to be responding positively. It seems like you guys have been everywhere lately, and your demand continues to increase.
Kris: Yeah man...we're just grateful that people are enjoying our music, and we are glad that we can play it on the road at so many great venues.
Watch CBDB's official video for "Ground Score" here:
On the topic of writing and recording music, you guys put out your first album Phone Keys Wallet in 2012, and followed up with a second album (Joyfunk is Dead) and The Fame EP in 2015. Tell me a little bit about how those recording experience differed.
Kris: I think we were learning at a more rudimentary level of playing with each other and writing when we did Phone Keys Wallet. I don’t really go back and listen to too many of our recordings after I have heard them once. It can be tough to listen to at points. You cringe and ask yourself “Why did I do that?” So I think with The Fame EP and Joyfunk is Dead, we used the things that we learned in recording Phone Keys Wallet. We were such a fresh band when we did that album. We went into the studio within a month of Paul (Oliver), our drummer, joining the band. That record has a lighter feel, and it's maybe a little beachy in a way. That might be something we need to play with again in the future.
In terms of the experiences, I mean…walking into FAME was like walking into a church. You feel like you're breathing wrong at first, then things eventually start to come together and happen. That’s just an amazing place. It’s both humbling and empowering in the same way. I don’t think there is a word that describes that feeling. If there is, I don’t know it.
Let’s talk a little bit about the 2016 touring schedule. I’ve been particularly impressed watching how well your tours have been put together. You guys recently signed on with the Progressive Global Agency in Nashville. How has the schedule come together this year?
Kris: Well, we first talked to Owen (Gray), our agent, in October of last year. After talking a few times, we decided it would be a good fit. We were obviously drawn to the fact that PGA is Widespread Panic’s agency. We are all big fans of them. Then there are also bands like The Werks and Zoogma, and Backup Planet had recently signed with Owen as well. He’s really been looking out for both of us this year. We’ve been on quite a few shows with those guys.
We’re really excited about doing this Claypool Lennon Delirium Afterparty in New York. David is as big of Claypool fan as I know. It’s kind of ironic, because a week before we landed that gig, I was talking with a friend of mine in Tuscaloosa about Sean Lennon. We listened to a few of his albums and really appreciated how similar and different his sound is to his dad’s (John Lennon). So it’s really kind of neat full circle thing.
Tonight is another example. It’s actually my 27th birthday today. I was born in Atlanta, and we’re here in Atlanta playing Terminal West tonight. Paul and I saw Rush in Atlanta last year on my birthday. We’re actually going to cover the Rush song “Sprit of the Radio” tonight. That's just another example of things coming full circle. We’re really excited about it. So, no birthday drinks tonight until I can successfully pull off Rush (laughs).
Going a little further on the touring, you guys are on for several festivals this summer, including Jam In The Ham in Birmingham next weekend. I know you guys are excited about that one.
Kris: We’re really excited about Jam In The Ham. That’s like a homecoming for us. We’re really grateful to be a part of it for the second year in a row. Zydeco is such a historic room. Paul and Glenn saw Snarky Puppy at Zydeco a few years back, right before they blew up. We actually saw those guys in Memphis last Wednesday. That kind of puts things into perspective. I’m really happy to be a part of a great thing there, with a lot of other great bands. You’ve got Permagroove, Little Raine Band, Modern Measure…just so many bands. Ryan Keef is gonna be doing some acoustic stuff that I’m really excited to hear. That one is gonna be a lot of fun.
It’s great to see so many great, young Alabama bands playing together. There really seems to be a great thing going on within the Alabama music scene right now. You’ve got to love events like this that showcase the collective group of bands.
Kris: Yeah absolutely. We’re just happy to be a part of it. Zydeco is so much fun. And you’re right… Just look at CukoRakko last weekend. That was awesome. McLovins, Permagroove, Funk You…there was so much great music. The fact that a lot of it is coming out of Alabama is just incredible. I can’t wait to see Little Raine Band again. I haven’t seen those guys play in months. We’re actually going to be in Macon, GA with them next week, and that’s going to be a lot of fun. Anytime you get to hear Davis play…it’s a treat. He’s the man.
Watch CBDB's official video for "Somewhere to Fall" here:
Absolutely. So before we wrap this up, are there any other big plans or major highlights that you guys are looking forward to in the second half of 2016?
Kris: Yeah…we actually just announced this morning that we’re going to be playing the official Umphrey’s McGee afterparty in Charlotte, NC later this summer. We have some great friends out that way, and we are excited for that to be the next move for Charlotte. That was a great feeling this morning. I had an alarm set, as we were supposed to announce that show at 10:00 AM. It was fun to announce the Umphrey’s afterparty on my birthday after a long night. It’s a great move for us, and I’m really looking forward to it.
The Werks are opening for Umphrey’s that night, so we’ll see who all makes it over to our show. Hopefully a few of those guys will make it, and we’ll see if we could maybe get Joel (Cummins) to come play some keys with us. Maybe I could get my face melted by Jake (Cinninger)…that would be humbling and awesome (laughs).
Throwback: The Werks, Papadosio, & Dopapod Perform 'Dark Side Of The Moon' May 26, 2016 14:29
Those who follow the jam/festival scene can vouch for the fact that there is currently an endless amount of talent to choose from. With new, exciting acts knocking on the door each year, The Werks, Papadosio, and Dopapod have established themselves as mainstays in the circuit. Back in 2009, The Werks founded The Werk Out Music & Arts Festival and have since solidified the annual event as one of the premier jam rock festivals in the country. Both Papadosio and Dopapod have been a part of the festival on multiple occasions.
Today, we are looking back on a major highlight from The Werk Out 2014, which featured members of The Werks, Papadosio, and Dopapod performing the iconic Pink Floyd album, Dark Side of the Moon, in it's entirety. Members of each band rotated on and off stage throughout the set, which even included a cameo from Zach Deputy during "Great Gig in the Sky." If you haven't had the privilege of watching this epic performance, we recommend setting aside 45 minutes, getting extra relaxed, and enjoying the video linked below.
Watch The Werks, Papadosio, and Dopapod perform 'Dark Side of the Moon' at The Werk Out 2014 here:
Founded in Columbus, Ohio in 2005, The Werks is best known for its quick rise into the jam band music scene and appearances at major festivals and events across the US and abroad. In early June 2011, the band rose to prominence when it hit the number 2 top searched artists on the leading online jam magazine, jambase.com, behind the band Phish and again in early 2012 when they hit number 1.
Originally from the creative collegiate hotbed of Athens, Ohio, Papadosio is now centered in Asheville, North Carolina. Hitting virtually all major and secondary U.S. music locales and select festivals across North America, Papadosio tours on a massive scale but maintains a close intimacy with their fans.
The Boston born, now generally Northeast based, but ever on-the-go Dopapod has come a long way from their college basement, DIY party roots. The past 4 years have individually held the weight of about 150 shows, and included numerous festival appearances like AURA Music & Arts Festival, Wakarusa, Summer Camp, Electric Forest, Camp Bisco, Peach Fest, & Gathering Of the Vibes, and Bonnaroo 2015.

Press Release via Perpetual Groove
Perpetual Groove is proud to announce their first full-length tour in over three years. Following the hiatus, the band enjoyed a limited number of two-night destination runs in 2015, all to sellout crowds. After working in the studio to develop a new EP(set for release later this summer), PGroove is ready to hit the road and bring new music to it’s fans! Tour kicks off at home August 19th, at the beloved Georgia Theatre in Athens, GA with a quick run up to Chattanooga, TN on August 20th to play the Southern Brewers Festival.
September will bring the group back to it’s Southern city of origin- Savannah, Georgia, for two nights at the Lucas Theatre. Come celebrate this special weekend in the town where Brock Butler and Adam Perry originally founded Perpetual Groove, as students of Savannah College of Art & Design. After the formation, the band would quickly become the defacto house band at local watering hole JJ Cagney’s, where they would hone their unique sound before touring nationally. Perpetual Groove could not be more thrilled to perform at the beautiful Lucas Theatre, their first show in Savannah since 2008!
The band will then work it’s way up the mid Atlantic until a performance at Catskill Chill Music Festival and drop down through Ohio, Nashville, and Charlotte. In October, the band heads to Colorado for a week of shows, wrapping up with a two-night run in Denver at Cervante’s Masterpiece. After celebrating Halloween in Austin for the first time, they'll spend two more nights in Texas before heading across the Gulf Coast with plays in New Orleans and Pensacola. The band returns to their traditional early December Sunshine State run in Florida with a night in Tampa, followed by two nights at a band and fan favorite, Culture Room in Ft. Lauderdale. Perpetual Groove will wrap up 2016 and ring in the New Year with another triple play at Atlanta’s Terminal West!

Members Of Rage Against The Machine, Cypress Hill, & Public Enemy Are Forming A Supergroup May 19, 2016 13:11
Earlier this week, Rage Against The Machine, who has been inactive since 2011, launched a website counting down to June 1st which included the phrase "Take The Power Back". This phrase also appeared on posters across the band's hometown of Los Angeles. After much speculation of an RATM reunion, Billboard is reporting that guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford, and drummer Brad Wilk are teaming up with Cypress Hill's B-Real and Public Enemy's Chuck D for a new supergroup called Prophets of Rage. They will reportedly perform material from all three groups. Vocalist Zack de la Rocha is the only member of RATM who is not involved.
The band's debut appears to be on June 3rd at Hollywood Palladium, with a show planned at Whiskey A-Go-Go in Los Angeles as well. While there will not be a full-blown RATM reunion, this supergroup could be the next best thing. Stay tuned for further developments and updates surrounding Prophets of Rage.

Future Rock Releases Fifth Studio Album 'Long Ago' May 16, 2016 16:31
Words by Brett Hutchins: Live & Listen
With Chicago being the birthplace of American electronic music, it should be no surprise to see bands emerging regularly from the city. Electronica trio Future Rock continues to do just that with their latest release, Long Ago. As a live act, the bass-drums-keyboard trio has built a reputation for scorching, full-throttle, multi-sensory experiences and is a hit on the Windy City scene.
One of the main criticisms you often hear about electronic and especially house music is that such heavy emphasis on groove takes away from the actual song. With this latest record, it’s clear the band’s intention was to turn that idea on its head.
Listen to Future Rock's new album Long Ago here:
The most obvious way they achieved this was with the use of Chicago-based Americana singer-songwriter Anna Soltys. On paper the combo may seem like a stretch, but her vocal presence on four of the seven tracks works magnificently, creating a grounded, moodier aesthetic and a sense of lyricism that’s both nostalgic and hopeful of the future at the same time. Lead track “Take It Back” is the best example of this, with a house backbeat and lyrics encouraging the listener to follow through on things long forgotten.
Don’t let the subdued vocals fool you into thinking this record is not a party, though. The standout track for me is instrumental “Pathfinder”, with tempo changes and styles that snake from a basic reverb-laden intro to drum and bass to majestic keyboard-driven heights.
Watch Future Rock perform "Pathfinder" here:
Future Rock also went out on a limb and rented a professional recording studio for the first time in its career. Tibault Bowman – you may recognize him as futuristic house act Thibault - was recruited to produce the record. That combo of fresh tools and gifted people has given the band the sound they were after – one that embraces both groove and memorable tunes.
In a sign of the times and the forward-thinking approach of the band, Future Rock’s entire discography is available for free on its website. The new release “Long Ago” is also available on 1320 Records, record label of electronic rock pioneers STS9.

The Road to CukoRakko: An Interview with Zach Deputy May 13, 2016 10:13

The Road to CukoRakko: Atticus Kelly of McLovins May 12, 2016 10:59
Our latest segment, "The Road to CukoRakko," consists of a series of interviews leading up to CukoRakko Music & Arts Festival this weekend at Horse Pens 40 in Steele, AL. We recently caught up with Atticus Kelly (keyboards/vocals) of McLovins, one the most promising young bands touring the country.
Inspired by an eclectic mix of influences like The Meters, The Band and The Flaming Lips, members Jason Ott, Jake Huffman, Justin Berger, and Atticus Kelly combine their songwriting skills with extended improvisations and instrumental ingenuity.
Taking a page from their jam band forefathers, McLovins always try to keep their audiences guessing at what’s to come. Their eclectic setlists and individual musical personas define the band’s live shows. Hailing from Hartford, Connecticut, McLovins have appeared at Gathering of The Vibes, Mountain Jam, The Peach Festival, and the legendary Nateva Music Festival, as well as many acclaimed venues across the country. They have also performed with some of the most influential artists on the scene, including Buddy Guy, George Porter, Jr., Robert Randolph, and Oteil Burbridge.
Recently the band cut an album with Emmy, Grammy, and Tony award winning producer Bill Sherman in New York City’s East Village. The album was released this October and the band is currently on tour. The band continues to evolve, bringing their distinctive, jam-rock productions across the country. Every tour brings a unique energy.
McLovins are set to play CukoRakko at 8:30 PM CST on Saturday night.
Interview by Jordan Kirkland: Live & Listen
While McLovins has been a nationally touring band for many years, the band's touring schedule has gone to another level since you guys finished college last year. How has the vigorous touring helped shape this band over the past year?
Atticus: The only way to create chemistry between musicians (musically and interpersonally) is to spend time together playing and hanging out. In 2015, we toured for six months out of the year. We have never sounded better than we do right now. I hope I can say that every year going forward as our tour schedule becomes more rigorous.

The band released a 12-track self-titled album last October, making for the fifth full length McLovins album. You obviously make a point to build on this material through improvisation with each show. Are certain songs more structured for free range jamming than others? What is your general approach towards improvisation?
Atticus: Yes. The “free range” jamming is hard to pull off unless everything is just right, and we don’t have many songs where we do that. A good example would be “Shivers” from Beautiful Lights. There are two jam sections in that song: one short, and one slightly longer. In the second jam, shit gets real and you have to be creative and also improvise something that fits the tone of the song. It can be a challenge. The next closest example would be Birthday, where we are trying to create something evocative and nostalgic for Justin to play over. That one is always a little different. I think I speak for the band when I say I particularly enjoy the funk jams (D.M.T, Gold, Run Like Hell). Those always get the party started and the rhythm sections always locks right in.
Watch McLovins perform "Buildin' It Up" at Toads Place in New Haven, CT here:
We're coming up on CukoRakko, one of Alabama's young, growing music festivals. Horse Pens 40 is often referred to as "the best secret in Alabama," with a vast amount of history and natural beauty. What does it mean to you guys to get back to Alabama and join the CukoRakko family?
Atticus: We’re always excited to break into a new market and meet new people, especially in a place like Alabama, where live music is such a focus for people. The scene there is alive with enthusiastic concertgoers who are willing to listen deeper. They’re the kind of fans that are in it for the long game, just like us, and are equally excited to see where this all goes. The south is one of our favorite places to play for this reason, and we are super pumped to be joining the family.
Click Here: Purchase Tickets to CukoRakko Music & Arts Festival
CukoRakko will give you guys an opportunity to play in front of many music fans who might be seeing McLovins for the first time. How would you best describe what the crowd at Horse Pens can expect from you guys on Saturday night?
Atticus: They can expect four dudes who spend WAY too much time together to play some funky, soulful music with great lyrics and tasteful jamming, as well as some playful rapport concerning out bassist, the fantastic Mr. Jason Ott.
Watch an "Atticus Fact" with special guest Robert Randolph here:
Watch the "Jersey Shore Atticus Fact" here:
You have become a bit of a celebrity with the recent video features known as "Atticus Facts". Definitely a creative way to let your fans know not only where McLovins are playing, but also learn something new about each city. Where does this vast amount of knowledge come from?
Atticus: Unfortunately, I am not as knowledgeable as I seem. Many of the facts are misinformation with a surrealist bent. If you watch from the beginning of the facts to the latest season, you will see that we have gone from stating a piece of misinformation (“Tonight we’re in Albany, the final resting place of John Wilkes Booth”) to all out insanity (the Jersey Shore fact). We’ve also made a point to include musicians that we’re performing with to add some flavor. Like the Robert Randolph fact that he absolutely crushed. Going forward things are going to get a lot weirder.
Click Here: Purchase Tickets to CukoRakko Music & Arts Festival
The countless amount of miles on the road allows you guys to get to know each other like no one else can. Is there anything you can share about each of your fellow band mates that people might not be aware of?
Atticus: Yes. They are all insane. But seriously, you learn a lot about each other (and yourself) when you spend this much time together. You learn about accountability in a group like this, and I’m just happy to have the chance to grow and do what I love with some of my best friends.

The Road to CukoRakko: A.C. DeMoss of Mother Funk May 11, 2016 08:57
Our latest segment, "The Road to CukoRakko," consists of a series of interviews leading up to CukoRakko Music & Arts Festival this weekend at Horse Pens 40 in Steele, AL. We recently caught up with A.C. DeMoss (guitar/vocals) of Mother Funk, one of Tuscaloosa's favorite young bands which has recently relocated to Nashville.
The four members of Mother Funk met in Tuscaloosa, AL and released their debut album, Coastal, in February 2014. After graduating college, they moved to Nashville, TN to continue writing & recording while still playing shows across the U.S. Mother Funk has been featured on the same bills as acts such as moe., Dispatch, Moon Taxi, The Revivalists, and Zoogma; playing venues such as Riverwalk Amphitheater, Costa Greekfest, Lake Martin Amphitheater.
The band recently released a self-titled live album in April 2016 and has been traveling to many different cities the past few months including Athens, New Orleans, Sewannee, Nashville, & Atlanta. Mother Funk is scheduled to headline this year’s CukoRakko Music and Arts Festival on May 13th in Steele, AL.
Interview by Jordan Kirkland: Live & Listen
Mother Funk has been going strong for six years now. You have been able to reach audiences far beyond the initial Tuscaloosa market at this point. How has the band's approach evolved since finishing school and entering "the real world"?
A.C.: Once I graduated from college about a year ago, we parted from our former bass player, Davis Hudson, who’s now in San Fransisco. This led to each member taking on a lot more responsibility in regards to our sound. It's been a real eye opener for every band member’s talents. Since our music has become bigger than our initial college cover band days, it’s given us a great opportunity to grow up as a band. And there’s not a better place to do it than here in good ole Nashville, TN!
Click Here: Purchase tickets to CukoRakko Music & Arts Festival
As Mother Funk continues to grow and play to new markets, the opportunity to perform and build your following only increases. How has the band's schedule shaped up thus far in 2016?
A.C.: Our schedule has been perfect so far, man. We’ve taken some time off to really grow as musicians, honing our songwriting & recording craft, and all of us moving to Nashville has really helped shape what we want to be and sound like. We love to play live, but we realized that we need to get back to the basics and develop what we want to be, if we’re really going to do this ‘band’ thing. Not to say that playing in places like Athens, GA and other venues around the southeast haven’t been fun this year—let’s just say we’re stoked for what’s in store for the festival goers at Cuko.
Listen to Mother Funk's self-titled live album here:
Mother Funk began working on it's second full length album in Nashville last year. How far along are you guys in the recording process? Have you taken a different approach than that of your previous album, Coastal?
A.C.: We’re proud of Coastal for what it is, ya know? We recorded it in three days. It was the first time we had ever stepped into a studio, and we learned a lot during that process. One thing we learned: three days in the studio is not the right approach. Mother Funk’s been on somewhat of a hiatus this past year to focus on what we want out of the band, and it has been very good for us. Each member brings a lot of creativity and ideas to the table, which is great for the Mother Funk/jam band sound. Now, we’re starting to take a ‘pocket rock’ approach to our new sound; recording demos as much as possible and working with some really talented people up here in Nashville. You can expect to hear some great work from the members of Mother Funk in the coming months.
Click Here: Purchase tickets to CukoRakko Music & Arts Festival
Every band has their own unique way of putting together a setlist. What does the process entail for you guys as you prepare for each show?
A.C.: Back in the college days, we used to be the band that would play in the background, but now we’re putting a whole lot more thought into providing a show for the audience. We want their undivided attention on the band on stage rocking their face off, rather than the beer in their hand. When we put together our setlist, our intention is to make that show memorable to everyone listening. We want people walking out of the festival thinking “I have never seen a band like that before—where are they playing next?”
Horse Pens 40 in Steele, AL :: Home of CukoRakko Music & Arts Festival
We're coming up on CukoRakko, one of Alabama's young, growing music festivals. Horse Pens 40 is without a doubt one of the most amazing locations in the state. What does it mean to you guys to join the CukoRakko family?
A.C.: We are freaking pumped! Living up here in Tennessee, you can get homesick being away from the great state of Alabama for so long. We can already tell Cuko is an up and coming festival and are extremely excited to be part of it.
Click Here: Purchase tickets to CukoRakko Music & Arts Festival
CukoRakko will give you guys an opportunity to play in front of many music fans who might be seeing Mother Funk for the first time. How would you best describe what the crowd at Horse Pens can expect from you guys?
A.C: We’re taking the same approach live as we are for our new material. Our new pocket rock sound has really hit home for us and the crowd over these past few shows. Since we’re kind of a ‘new’ band now, Cuko can expect a show that they’ve never heard before. Even the old Mother Funk fans will be surprised.

Music On The Hill To Feature Bonerama, Jimmy Hall, & More In Auburn (Sat. 5/14) May 10, 2016 16:08

-
Also featured is Jimmy Hall, lead vocalist for Mobile-based band Wet Willie, one of the 2016 inductees into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. The Auburn University Faculty Jazz Ensemble will round out the program.
-
"Even in a city like New Orleans that doesn't play by the rules, Bonerama is something different. They can take you to the streets of New Orleans. Funk, jazz, blues, rock, all rolled into one set of music, sometimes into one song," said Willi Cox, chairperson of the event.
-
Music on the Hill is a successor to the association's Jazz & Blues Festival, formerly held at Pebble Hill. The festival was moved to University Place RV Park in anticipation of a larger crowd than in the past, Cox said.

-
The Auburn Arts Association's primary mission is to promote arts education, encourage local artists, and stimulate community interest in the arts. Opelika's Dora James honorary chairperson for Music on the Hill, recently took over as chair of the Alabama State Council on the Arts, and she said she was especially pleased that revenues generated by the festival will be used for summer art programs for local children.
“Exposing our young people to the arts is a significant endeavor in all parts of the state,” James said. "I applaud the Auburn Arts Association for its initiative in starting Music on the Hill as a new jazz festival in the area.”
-
Both Bonerama and Jimmy Hall have headlined the Alex City Jazz Fest, a two-day outdoor event that has attracted thousands to downtown Alex City and Lake Martin for 25 years, and Bonerama will be fresh from appearances in New York City and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Cox said he was able to get a band of Bonerama’s stature because of his New Orleans connections.
-
"New Orleans is a small town and everybody knows everybody," Cox says. "I have a little place on Bayou St John, and our neighborhood is full of artists and musicians."
Sponsorships are still available, including corporate tables for eight. Presale tickets for the event will be available at for $20 at the Guitar Shop, Spicer’s Music, Hair It Is, Stamp and the Chamber of Commerce as well as online on the Auburn Arts Association website at www.auburnartsassociation.
-
“This should be an exciting event showcasing many talented musicians,” James said. “I hope the public will take advantage to come out and enjoy a fun evening.”
-
To learn more about Bonerama visit their official website. For more info about Music on the Hill, contact Willi Cox at willifred@aol.com. Check out the Facebook page by clicking here.

Displace Hosts Cinco de Displace Party at Dunedin Brewery May 10, 2016 13:13
Displace (Tampa, FL) teamed up with Fletcher’s Grove (Morgantown, WV) to host a Cinco de Displace party at Dunedin Brewery in Dunedin, FL on Thursday, May 5th. Playing to a packed crowd, Displace took advantage of the unique decorations of the venue to record a 360 degree “virtual reality” video of their new song “Friction”.
The band also recorded the set, and are releasing it for stream and download on their Bandcamp page. As always, the set can be downloaded for free via the “name your price” option on the website.
Watch Displace's 360 video of "Friction" from Dunedin Brewery here:
The band wasted no time ripping into a fourteen and a half minute version of “Generation: Sloan” (The first song off their first studio album, “Eureka”) and jumped quickly into a riveting version of “Float” (The first song off their second studio album, “Undertow,” which will be released on June 21st digitally followed by an album release run starting the next day.). The band next maneuvered into a 25 minute mash up of The Zuton’s “Valerie” into the crowd favorite “Needles,” before busting into, a fun, funky version of Nelly’s “Ride Wit Me”.
The second half of the set started with the newer song, “The Flight of Admiral Archibald,” which segued into another new song “Friction”. The band then threw it back to their roots with a crazy version of “Hillsborogh River Rapids”. Joking with the crowd, they told the story of how someone in the parking lot begged them to play a Prince song. They then played The Rolling Stones “You Can’t Always Get What You Want..” The band finished the night off with a dance driven “Geonosis Shuffle” and a throwback to your teenage years with System of a Down’s “Toxicity”. Not wanting to leave the crowd disappointed, they came back on stage for an encore and played a powerful version of the ear-worm “Don’t Fret.”
