Keller Williams Releases New Five-Song EP Benefitting Tim Bluhm June 28, 2016 09:59

Photo by Craig Baird: Live & Listen

Today, independent recording artist Keller Williams releases Bluhm, a five track EP benefitting fellow musician Tim Bluhm of The Mother Hips who, in the fall of 2015, was severely injured in a speed flying accident. Since his accident, Tim has undergone a number of surgeries incurring upwards of $50,000 in uninsured medical expenses. Keller has been a longtime fan of Tim Bluhm, whom he describes as “the epitome of a west coast songwriter.” Inspired by Tim’s plight, Keller wanted to support Tim and his music by releasing Bluhm and giving 100% of the net proceeds to Tim Bluhm’s medical fund.

For the Bluhm recording, Keller rallied an all-star west coast crew of musicians and some old time friends to collaborate on this five track EP. Bluhm features performances by Jackie Greene, Reed Mathis, Jason Crosby, and Larry and Jenny Keel. “I looked at it as a perfect excuse to record five of my favorite Tim Bluhm songs with all the proceeds going to help him get back on his foot,” says Williams. Bluhm is available for digital download through livedownloads.com and iTunes.

As always, Keller is a busy man this summer. In addition to recording Bluhm, he is travelling the country hitting many festivals with some of his fan-favorite projects and working on a new KWahtro record to be released in the coming months. You can catch Keller Williams at the shows listed below and stay tuned for a Fall Tour announcement coming in July!

Present Walrus: A Tribute To The Beatles

The Heavy Pets are an American rock band that blends rhythm & blues, jazz, funk, disco and reggae with rock & roll. C alled “a living, breathing force of nature” by Relix Magazine, the Pets are known for their soulful song craft and powerhouse live performances. Continuing the momentum of their current EP series, The Heavy Pets recorded and released Stolen Smile in the second half of 2014 amidst their rigorous tour schedule which recently surpassed 1,000 performances.  Dubbed The Heavy Pets Present Walrus: A Beatles Tribute, the band will perform a set full of Beatles covers while putting their own unique, jammed out spin on the familiar tunes.

The group became an instant SiriusXM radio sensation in 2007 with the release of their double-disc debut album, Whale. First embraced by the jam scene for their raw talent, their crossover sound that is showcased on their self-titled album, also dubbed a “Top 10 Album of 2010” by The Huffington Post, propelled them into the periphery of mainstream music. Returning to their acoustic roots on Swim Out Past the Sun (2011), THP's guitar duo set aside their electric axes for a more organic approach. The Pets followed up those polished efforts by releasing Everywhere Sessions: Volume 1 (2012), recorded live in the studio with accompanying videos. In 2013, The Heavy Pets launched an ongoing series of self-produced EPs with Two Horses and followed up with Rags and Aces in May of 2014, with both receiving heavy airplay on satellite radio.

The Heavy Pets have taken the stage at Bonnaroo, Jam Cruise, High Sierra, Gathering of the Vibes, All Good, Wakarusa, Mountain Jam, Hulaween, Langerado, Bear Creek, Summer Camp, Catskill Chill, AURA and their namesake PetZoo.

Zach Deputy has made his mark thus far as a touring powerhouse. As a boy, the music of his Puerto Rican, Cruzan and Irish heritage was cooked up in the South Carolina heat. The Calypso rhythms and folk songs of St. Croix competed with the R&B / soul of pioneers like James Brown and Ray Charles for space on the family stereo. As Deputy honed his craft, a unique hybrid of these influences emerged, ultimately creating the signature Zach Deputy sound.

To bring this sound to the stage, the big, impossibly upbeat South Carolinian with the infectious smile puts on a solo show– enhanced by looping technology– that is essentially a one man dance party offering up what he calls “Island-infused, Drum ‘n’ Bass, Gospel-Ninja-Soul” to the enthusiastic crowds of dancers who flock to clubs from coast-to-coast. It is these late night dance parties— more than 250 per year– that have made Zach Deputy one of the hottest up-and-coming performers on the camping festival circuit and “jam band” scene. For Zach, most days begin in a hotel room and end a couple of hours after walking off stage.

McLovins is a soulful rock band that complements a youthful and infectious energy with seasoned and diverse musical talent. Inspired by an eclectic mix of influences like The Band, Steely Dan and The Flaming Lips bassist Jason Ott, drummer Jake Huffman, guitarist Justin Berger and keyboardist Atticus Kelly combine their progressive songwriting skills with 70’s inspired extended improvisations and instrumental ingenuity.
-
Hailing from Hartford, Connecticut, McLovins have appeared at Gathering of the VibesMountain Jam, The Peach Festival, and the legendary Nateva Music Festival. They have also performed with some of the most influential artists on the scene, including Buddy Guy, George Porter Jr., Oteil Burbridge and Robert Randolph.
-
Currently the band is on the road promoting its self-titled new album cut in New York
City’s East Village and produced by 2-time Grammy award winner Bill Sherman.
As the band continues to evolve, consistency lies in the distinctive Jam-rock production that brings a vibrant sound and a unique energy to many acclaimed venues and festivals across the country.

CBDB is a progressive rock/jam band formed in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, whose stock is rising fast. Fresh off the release of their third album, entitled "The FAME EP", they are seeing a pattern of snowballing momentum with large, energetic crowds hungry for their unique brand of progressive jam-rock, dubbed Joyfunk. CBDB blends soulful vocals and virtuosic instrumentation with smart, tasteful songwriting resulting in a sound that can be enjoyed by the casual listener and audiophile alike. On stage, they parade tight, ambitious compositions that seamlessly gives way to loose, adventurous improvisation and have quickly become a must-see act.

Paw Paw’s Medicine Cabinet is Gabriel Willis on bass and vocals, Mike Jernigan on guitar and vocals, Ethan Snediger on drums and percussion, and Jeremy Ault on lead guitar. Formed in February 2015, Paw Paw’s Medicine Cabinet made waves after just a handful of shows along the Gulf Coast. In March, the band was featured on Studio10 which airs on WALA Fox10. Video of the performance was shared across multiple platforms and featured on more than a dozen local television stations across the country.

PPMC has hours of material covering everything from The Fugees to John Mayer to Eminem to the Bee Gees. Be sure to check out the sample set list for details. Lee Yankie has been playing as a solo act and with his live band Lee Yankie & The Hellz Yeah in the Gulf Coast area since 2004. At the moment Lee is working on a new solo record "The Leavin' Sound". The solo album is influenced by Lee's acoustic solo work and creates a down home feel with plenty of Lee's signature slide guitar work. This album has tinges of everything from blues rock to downhome gospel, r&b and what some might call soulful country. "The Leavin' Sound" is set to be released in late summer 2012.

Phish Kicks Off Summer Tour With Major Bust Outs June 23, 2016 01:09

Phish kicked off it's highly anticipated summer tour at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota on Wednesday night, and they wasted no time busting out an impressive new light display and some very rare material.  The tour opener came in the form of "Pigtail," a Trey Anastasio Band original, before "Wolfman's Brother" carried the rowdy crowd into a familiar groove.  Next up was another bust out, "Daniel Saw The Stone," the more spiritual, upbeat bluegrass tune.  "The Dogs" and "Undermind" would follow, before the evening's biggest bust out came in the form of The Beatles' "Dear Prudence," which hadn't been played since it's debut at the band's Halloween show in 1994 (796 shows).  Then came "Stash," which led us to "Round Room," yet another bust out.  "Horn," "Uncle Pen," "Halfway To The Moon," and the always mesmerizing "Walls Of The Cave" would close out the first set.

The band kicked off the second set in classic Phish fashion; diving straight into "Mike's Song" > "I Am Hydrogen" > "Weekapaug Groove".  A beautiful take on "Bouncing Round The Room" was next, and "Ghost" > "The Line" wasn't far behind.  We even got a "Little Drummer Boy" tease from Trey Anastasio (guitar/vocals) during "Ghost"  "Simple," one of the evening's bigger jams, would ultimately lead into The Velvet's Underground's "I Found A Reason," and you guessed it...another bust out.  This one hadn't been touched since Phish's 1998 Halloween show (493 shows).  One of the most familiar jams of 2015, "No Men In No Man's Land," was up next and continued to prove it's worth as a vehicle for improvisation.  "Billy Breathes" brought about yet another bust out and easily one of the band's most underrated tunes.  A solid take on "Bathtub Gin" would ultimately bring the set to a close.

"Water In The Sky" made it's first appearance since last July in Austin, but this time with the slower pace that many were accustomed to in the late 90's.  The always explosive "Character Zero" would follow, sending the packed house in St. Paul into an all out frenzy.  It certainly appears as if Phish is gearing up for another magical summer.

Phish continues their summer tour this weekend with two nights at Wrigley Field in Chicago, followed by what's sure to be a monster Sunday show at Klipsch Music Center (Deer Creek) in Noblesville, Indiana.  Stay tuned for future updates from Live & Listen.

Listen To The Red Hot Chili Peppers' New Album 'The Getaway' June 17, 2016 17:24

Legendary American funk/rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers have officially released The Getaway, their first studio album in five years.  The band took a bit of a different approach with this album, creating all of the material inside the studio, rather than writing it in advance, with direction of the acclaimed producer Danger Mouse.  This new strategy for the Chili Peppers is undoubtedly creates a unique listening experience for the band's rabid fan base.  Spotify users can stream The Getaway in it's entirety below, while those who aren't premium Spotify users listen to the full album via YouTube.  You can also watch the band's official music video for the album's first single "Dark Necessities" below.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, also sometimes shortened to "The Chili Peppers" or abbreviated as "RHCP", are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1983. The group's musical style primarily consists of rock with an emphasis on funk, as well as elements from other genres such as punk rock and psychedelic rock. When played live, their music incorporates elements of jam band due to the improvised nature of much of their performances. Currently, the band consists of founding members Anthony Kiedis (vocals) and Flea (bass), longtime drummer Chad Smith; and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who joined in late-2009, replacing John Frusciante.

Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of the best-selling bands of all time with over 80 million records sold worldwide, have been nominated for sixteen Grammy Awards, of which they have won six and are the most successful band in alternative rock radio history currently holding the records for most number one singles (12), most cumulative weeks at number one (85) and most top-ten songs (25) on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. In 2012, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Celebrate Red Rocks' 75th Anniversary With Five Killer Performances June 15, 2016 17:28

Photo via RedRocksOnline.com

Today, the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre celebrates it's 75th anniversary, and that's something that simply cannot be overlooked. Red Rocks Amphitheatre is a rock structure near Morrison, Colorado, 10 miles west of Denver, where concerts are given in the open-air amphitheatre. There is a large, tilted, disc-shaped rock behind the stage, a huge vertical rock angled outwards from stage right, several large outcrops angled outwards from stage left and a seating area for up to 9,525 people in between. The amphitheater is owned and operated by the City and County of Denver, Colorado and is located in Red Rocks Park, part of the Denver Mountain Parks system.

The earliest notable rock-and-roll performance at Red Rocks was by The Beatles on August 26, 1964, the only concert not sold out during their US-tour.  The beautiful and unique setting has led to the venue becoming a favorite for many performers, including Jimi Hendrix on September 1, 1968.  U2 performed at the amphitheatre on June 5, 1983 during their War Tour, in front of a crowd of 9,000 people.

Red Rocks was one of the favored venues for The Grateful Dead and the venue has become a traditional stop for many subsequent jam bands. Widespread Panic holds the record for the most sold out performances at Red Rocks (48 shows). Blues Traveler has played the venue every Fourth of July since 1993, except 1999 when lead singer and harmonica player John Popper was unable to play due to heart surgery.  The venue has also seen numerous performances from the likes of Phish, My Morning Jacket, Tedeschi Trucks Band, String Cheese Incident, Umphrey's McGee, STS9, and so many more.

In honor of Red Rocks' 75th anniversary, we've included video footage of five of our favorite performances below.  We feel confident that we can speak for the all music fans when we say, "Thank you, Red Rocks, for providing an endless amount of memories to music fans far and wide!"

Turbo Suit Will Perform Their Final Set at Electric Forest June 14, 2016 21:46

After four years of heavy touring, including numerous appearances at many of the nation's biggest music festivals, electro funk trio Turbo Suit (formerly known as Cosby Sweater) has announced that they are calling in quits.  The trio consists of David Embry (live mixing/vocals/production), Nicholas Gerlach (saxophone/EWI/keys), and Jeff Peterson (drums). In a message posted on the group's Facebook page, Turbo Suit released an official statement explaining that their final performance will come at next weekend's Electric Forest in Rothbury, Michigan.  The three-piece has built quite a name for themselves in recent years, touring and supporting many of the biggest acts in the jam/electronic music scene.  You may have even seen them joined by the likes of Joel Cummins and Ryan Stasik of Umphrey's McGee on special occasions.  We wish the band nothing but the best of luck moving forward.

See below for their official statement via the Turbo Suit Facebook page.

Over the last 4 years, we have had the opportunity to do some amazing things. We started this project with no intentions of ever going as far as we did with our little group. We’ve played countless festivals, venues that we could only dream of playing, and have opened for bands that we’ve looked up to for years. We made lots of friends and fans over the years and are so grateful for all the opportunities that we were given to make you forget about this crazy world we live in, even if for just an hour or two.

Without going on and on and dragging this whole thing out, we would like to announce that next week at Electric Forest will be our last show. So please, let us not be sad that this is ending, but celebrate that it even happened in the first place. Thank you guys so much for letting us do what we do. We love you.

Five Reasons You Don't Want To Miss SliceFest 2016 June 10, 2016 09:50

-
Photo by Jordan Kirkland: Live & Listen
-
SliceFest, Birmingham’s biggest music and food and block party returns this weekend, featuring sounds from all over the South with it's 2016 lineup.  This year's event will feature The RevivalistsThe Soul Rebels, Keller Williams,  The Weeks, Vallejo, Break ScienceMuddy MagnoliasRiley Green, and Bailey Ingle on Saturday, June 11th.  SliceFest is held in the Lakeview District on 29th Street South, with the stage in the street towards Slice Pizza & Brewhouse and Moe's Original BBQ.
-
“We are excited to be celebrating with the great Lakeview and Birmingham communities as we bring you year five of SliceFest,” stated Jason Bajalieh, co-owner & bro-founder of Slice Pizza & Brewhouse. “The lineup is a solid collaboration of festival to funk and we will top it all off with a grand fireworks show at the end of the night.”
-
While we are looking forward to everything that SliceFest has to offer on Saturday, we've narrowed that list down to five reasons that you don't want to miss out on our favorite annual block party.
-
-
-
1.  SliceFest 2016 delivers fun family activities for all ages from 1pm to 4pm, followed by a full lineup of musical artists playing sets throughout the evening. A few of this year’s family-friendly activities include giant connect four and chess, face painting, balloon art and the chance to hang out and be photographed with the Marvel Superheroes.  Children ages 12 and under are admitted for free.
-
2.   Community is what SliceFest is all about, not just a celebration of those that support Slice Pizza & Brewhouse, but a way to give back to the community. SliceFest has donated over $30,000 to Birmingham-based non-profits. This year SliceFest is partnering with The Suki Foundation, a not-for-profit organization created by Brian & Marie Bateh, in honor of their daughter Sarah Katherine Bateh, affectionately known as Suki, following her diagnosis of Rett Syndrome at age two. In efforts to raise awareness and assist children in reaching their potential through early intervention services, SUKI Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of those affected with Rett Syndrome and other neurological disorders. With early detection and diagnosis, the life of a child with Rett Syndrome can greatly be improved.   We are obviously big believers in the concept of making a difference through the power of music.  Anytime we can support other groups who believe in this concept, we're all about it.
-
-
3.  The Revivalists, one of the hottest bands to surface out of the Southeast in years, is the headlining act.  This is a band we have had the privilege of watching grow for several years now.  Last November, The Revivalists headlined one of our events, The Blueberry Jam at Weeks Bay Plantation, and they blew us away (in 30 degree weather).   In rock ‘n’ roll, you’ve got to walk the well-trodden path of the genre’s forefathers one step at a time. Each gig under your belt makes for another fan, while every record serves as the next totem for your legacy. It’s a proverbial rite of passage, and there’s no skipping to the end. The Revivalists didn’t take any shortcuts.  You may have read their recent feature in Rolling Stone magazine, or maybe you saw them perform live on The Today Show.  This band brings an energy and passion like no other, and you'll see it for yourself on Saturday night.
-
Watch The Revivalists perform "Wish I Knew You" at Tipitina's here:
-
-
4.  Keller Williams is coming to the party.  If you're familiar with the man they call "K-Dub", that's really all you need to know.  Keller has been bringing his "acoustic dance music" to venues and festivals across the United States since the mid-90's, performing on stage with bands such as The String Cheese Incident.   Williams' music combines elements of bluegrass, folkalternative rock, reggae, electronica/dance, jazz, funk, and other assorted genres. He is often described as a 'one-man jam-band' due to his frequent use of live phrase looping with multiple instruments.  Look out for a Grateful Dead cover on Saturday, as it's a rare occasion when Keller doesn't dig up something from the Dead catalog.
-
Watch Keller Williams perform "Freeker By The Speaker" here:
-
-
5.  There's going to be a late night Break Science set.  Break Science features one of the baddest drummers on the planet, Adam Deitch, with acclaimed producer Borahm Lee.  Some may know Deitch as the drummer of funk powerhouse Lettuce.  This duo creates a refreshingly original take on electronic music. The live show transcends expectations with Lee's seasoned trip-hop/dub/jazz vibes on keyboards and Ableton Live and Deitch's thunderous breakbeat style on drums.   Last Summer, Break Science electrified the festival circuit with packed dates across the country, including huge plays at Bonnaroo, Summer Set, Pemberton, Summercamp, Wakarusa, & Sonic Bloom Music Festivals. Lee and Deitch also brought their captivating style to Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado 5/31 (w/ Bassnectar).  Those looking to party on Saturday night definitely want to stick around after The Revivalists and the fireworks show.

Looking Ahead To The Werk Out: An Interview With Rob Chafin June 8, 2016 16:11

Photo by Josh Timmermans: Noble Visions

Interview by Jordan Kirkland: Live & Listen

We recently had a chance to catch up with Rob Chafin (drums/vocals) of The Werks, in an effort to learn more about one of the summer's hottest festivals, The Werk Out Music & Arts Festival.  In addition to handling the duties behind the kit for The Werks, Rob also serves as talent buyer for The Werk Out, which is celebrating it's seventh anniversary in 2016.  The festival is scheduled for August 4th-6th at Legend Valley in Thornville, Ohio, featuring acts such as The Werks (three nights), STS9 (two sets), LettuceGreensky Bluegrass, DopapodTwiddle, and many more.

Let's get started and talk a little Werk Out.  You guys started this festival in 2010, making this year number seven.  How did this idea come to life, and how have things progressed over the years?

Rob: We started The Werk Out in 2010 at Zane Shawnee Caverns in Bellefontaine, Ohio.  It was an indian reservation with underground crystal caves, so it's not technically part of Ohio.  It was pretty ridiculous the first two years.  We quickly outgrew that area and moved it to Legend Valley, where the festival has been held for the past four years. Legend Valley is obviously historic with the Grateful Dead playing there, as well as bands like Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and countless others throughout the year.  The Grateful Dead would have around 60,000 people out there.  It is literally Legend Valley.  It's an honor to be able to have our party there now.  This is certainly on the trajectory of being the biggest Werk Out, by far.

It's great to see the universal growth of the bands on this lineup, like Dopapod, Twiddle, Greensky, and of course The Werks.  Last year you guys brought in Umphrey's McGee, and this year it's Sound Tribe Sector 9.  I look at this festival as a collection of the best bands in the jam scene.

Rob: Well thanks man.  It's definitely great being a musician as the talent buyer because I’m able to be in the trenches, see who are absolutely killing it and bring them to the festival.  Luckily, a lot of these bands are our friends!  It's amazing to look back at all of the bands who have played The Werk Out.  Having STS9 and Umphrey’s at our event is truly an honor.  Even GRiZ played back in 2013 when he was getting started, and he's absolutely huge now.  The Floozies are blowing up.  Greensky Bluegrass played back in 2012, and now they're back as a headliner...watching Dopapod grow every year.  It's absolutely incredible.

Watch The Werks perform "Onslaught" at The Werk Out 2015 here:

It really is.  Aside from the established acts and those you have known for years, how do you go about filling out the lineup with the up-and-comers?

Rob:  I'm definitely always looking for the new up-and-coming acts. There is definitely a long waiting list, because while we try not to repeat everyone every year, but there are typically only a few open slots each year.  We try to keep it new and interesting.  We try to see who's been killing it lately and bring them to the party.  I'm always on the lookout for great musicians, songwriters, and of course great drummers, but I might be a little biased there (laughs).

Click Here: Purchase Tickets To The Werk Out Music & Arts Festival

You guys have put together several epic tribute sets in recent years.  In 2014, it was The Werks, Papadosio, and Dopapod performing Dark Side of the Moon.  What other tributes have you guys done in the past?  Let's hear a little more about the Twerkapod Tribute to the 90's this year.

Rob: Whenever we get to collaborate with our friends, it's always fun for us. We had a blast doing Dark Side of the Moon with Papadosio and Dopapod.  So of course with Dopapod, we already know it's gonna be fun to do this 90's cover set with them.  We went on tour for the entire fall last year with Twiddle, and we had some many epic superjams with them.  To be able to involve them and bring them to The Werk Out for their first year is really exciting.  We're gonna throw down and play some awesome 90's covers with some of our best friends!

Photo by Josh Timmermans: Noble Visions

How do you go about selecting the setlist from such a diverse decade of music?  Have you finalized which songs will make the cut yet?

Rob: Yeah, we already have the songs picked out.  It's top secret, classified information, of course (laughs).  I can tell you one thing though.  It starts at 2:30 in the morning, so get your beauty rest the night before!

Wow...that's going to be epic.  So in 2014, the famous Furthur bus stopped by The Werk Out.  Is that something that has happened in the past?

Rob: So they were doing a tour that summer.  They hit a lot of festivals, like Gathering of the Vibes and a lot of the really big ones.  We were lucky enough for them to choose The Werk Out as one of their stops.  We played "Cryptical" > "The Other One" > "Cryptical" and had Zane and Derrick come out and kind of bless the crowd beforehand (laughs).  It was really cool.  They had a blast, and we would love to have the bus come around again.

Watch The Werks perform the Grateful Dead's "Cryptical" > "The Other One" > "Cryptical" at The Werk Out here:

I cant say enough about the quality of HD video footage from The Werk Out.  You guys really capture the essence of the festival and give those unable to attend a nice taste of what it's all about.

Rob: Of course...Jeremy Sewell is one of the best in the business.  We're very lucky to have him on board.

No doubt about that.  So aside from the music, what other activities do you guys offer at The Werk Out?

Rob:  We have a lot of other things going on.  While it's a music festival, it's specifically a music and arts festival.  We definitely have a lot of interactive art installations.  We have over 50 live painters, and a lot of performers and fire spinners.  There's yoga in the mornings.  We have an entire workshop dome, where people are presenting workshops ranging from philosophical and introspective workshops all the way to how to make ice cream.  We also have the VIP room for meet and greets and what not.

I think the biggest thing is that it's BYOB.  We don't sell alcohol at the festival, so everyone can bring in their own.  There is no festival of our size that does that.  We don't really advertise it, but that's how we want it.  It's one of the things I learned as a festival goer.  As an event producer, it's great to have the perspective of being in a band and an avid festival goer.  It's a rare opportunity to see all angles and try to accommodate as best as possible.

The little things like that really go a long way.  Attention to detail and that type of decision making are a big reason why this festival has become what it is today.  You guys obviously know what it takes to throw a successful festival.  What do you feel are some of the most important factors of establishing a building an annual music and arts festival?

Rob: First and foremost, it's crucial to have an amazing support staff and team.  We're lucky to have some of the best in the business.  The vibe is crucial.  The vibe starts with the staff and the artists, and it works its way to the fans.  When the staff and artists are all vibing, and everything is running smooth, I feel like that vibrates to the music, the crowd, and everything else.  I've always looked for that and making sure we have that strong core team.  We feel like the artists are family to us.  Listening to the fans is also crucial.  You have to talk with everyone and see what they want.  That's a big part of it, while still sticking to your guns.

Rising Funk-Fusion Act Displace Set to Release Sophomore Album "Undertow" & Embark on National Tour June 7, 2016 13:13

Tampa-based funk band Displace is set to release their sophomore album, Undertow on June 25, 2016. Self recorded in Tampa by Vinny Svoboda, bassist for the band and founder of VATS Productions, along with help from the band’s drummer Tucker Sody and guitarist Sam Dobkin, Undertow builds on the themes touched upon in the band’s first album Eureka! while showing great improvement in the compositions, improvisational aspects and overall musicianship at the same time.

Undertow, literally defined, is the force that pulls water into a wave. With this in mind, Undertow starts appropriately with ‘Accidental Necessity (Part II),’ as the first sound featured on album two is a reversed sample of the note that ended album one (Eureka!). The wave of album one breaks and is sucked back into the undertow as another wave forms. From here, we roll back past the shallows of the Beatles-esque earworm ‘Float,’ and it becomes clear that the wave is beginning to form. Duality is explored in ‘Two Worlds’ where complex rhythms break way to ponderous Floyd-inspired choruses. The funky ride back toward the forming wave is expressed in ‘Friction’ and ‘Mantis,’ which are rump-shaking tunes through and through. ‘Soup’ and ‘The Flight of Admiral Archibald’ outline ascension to the crest, while ‘Garden’ serves the role of your humble narrator. Scattered throughout the album, the ‘Ellipses’ trilogy gives the listener chance to come up for air while the current carries on beneath. Undertow was entirely self-produced from top to bottom and is meant to be listened to as a continuous piece of art.

The band will host a live preview of Undertow with commentary on Tampa’s WMNF In The Groove radio show Tuesday, June 21st from 10-11PM. On June 25, 2016 the band is hosting an album release party at Crowbar in Tampa with support from St. Petersburg locals Holey Miss Moley, and local house DJ K Slat. This show doubles as the culmination of a three show pre-party run for The Great Outdoors Jam, following shows in Tallahassee and Jacksonville. The band will partake in The Great Outdoors Jam in Mount Dora, Florida and Dunedin Brewery’s 20th Anniversary Celebration the next week before embarking on a three-week national tour. Their first national tour takes them to Tuscaloosa, New Orleans, Austin and two weeks in Colorado.

“Holly Bowling sat in on “Hillsborough River Rapids.” Sam Dobkin was playing a world of guitar, and they blew up my favorite song, “Geonosis Shuffle,” with the rhythm section (Vinny Svoboda and Tucker Sody) anchoring everything.” – Scott Hopkins, Musicfestnews.com

AURA Music & Arts Festival Has Come To An End June 7, 2016 11:29

Words by Jordan Kirkland: Live & Listen
-
We are extremely disappointed to report that after seven amazing years, AURA Music & Arts Festival has announced it's retirement.  For the past seven years, AURA has essentially kicked off each year's festival season.  Held annually in early March, the festival grew in numbers each year, prompting a move to Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in 2013.  Recent years have brought acts such as The Disco Biscuits, moe., Thievery Corporation, Snarky Puppy, The WerksPapadosio, Perpetual GrooveDopapod, Turkuaz, and so many more to the sacred grounds of Suwannee.  I have been lucky enough to cover this festival for the past two years, and I can't say enough about my experience.
-
It all starts with the venue, and you simply can't find a more pure, natural setting for a music and arts festival than Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park.  The AURA team went above and beyond to make this festival bigger and better each year.  AURA was the first major music event that I ever covered, as AURA 2015 came about 6 months after Live & Listen was formed.  The lineup fit my musical taste perfectly each year, bringing together the best of the best that the jam scene has to offer, with notable attention paid to the best up-and-comers.
-
I can't say "thank you" enough to Daryl Wolff, Destiny Beck, and the entire AURA team for allowing  Live & Listen to help promote and cover this event for the past two years.  See below for the official statement from Daryl Wolff via AURA's official facebook page.  Thank you for the memories, AURA!

Official statement from Daryl Wolff:
-

Since the inaugural AURA in 2010, over 18,000 tickets were sold, over 175 musical acts performed, over 50 visual artists painted live and over 150 different staff members came together to make this all possible for YOU!

After long deliberations with our team, we’ve decided that the event has far surpassed our goals and that we’re going to close this chapter of our lives. Producing a show of this scale is no easy task for an independent promoter, yet we still managed to pull off consistent growth each and every year since inception…. Pretty amazing!

I’m extremely proud of the community we’ve built, the memories we’ve made and the vast history of art, music, friendships and families that we leave in our footprints.

We’ve still got PLENTY of archives to release from the last seven years, including a complete video recap of the entire history of AURA Music & Arts Festival (coming soon!), so keep your eyes on our social networks!

On behalf of Cameron, Matt, Destiny, Craig, CJ, Bianca and our entire staff, I thank you all for your dedicated support to our vision. There is no greater feeling than bringing people together and creating smiles rooted around the common language of music, art, love and equality.

With more love than can be put into words, THANK YOU!
-Daryl Wolff, Founder, AURA Music & Arts Festival.

“You may say i’m a dreamer, but i’m not the only one…. I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will be as one” - John Lennon

Prophets of Rage Announces 35-Show North American Tour June 6, 2016 13:51

Prophets of Rage, the newly formed supergroup featuring members of Rage Against The Machine, Cypress Hill and Public Enemy, continue to make noise after last night's surprise show at Brooklyn's Warsaw.  Just this morning, the group has announced a massive 2016 North American tour which features a total of 35 dates.

The group made their debut just last week as West Hollywoods' Whiskey A-Go-Go.  Inclement weather caused their weekend set at Governor's Ball to be cancelled, prompting last night's surprise show in Brooklyn.  For a complete listing of Prophets of Rage's North American Tour Dates, see below.
