Looking Back On An Amazing Weekend At Fool's Paradise April 10, 2017 14:19

Words & Photos by Amanda Franklin

Last weekend, funk fanatics and groove chasers gathered at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre to celebrate another weekend of incredible music at Fool’s Paradise.  The weather was immaculate, spirits were high, and the music, to no surprise, was spot-on.

Friday highlights included Manic Science supplying a funk-heavy electronic set, Lettuce supplying the sunset vibes, and JRAD bringing the absolute heat and Tom Hamilton closing off the night with some raging riffs.  The crowd echoed throughout the amphitheater as everyone joined in belting "Brown Eyed Woman" along with Scott Metzger and Hamilton.  Keyboardist Jeff Chimenti carried the 10+ minute jam as the band traversed between the mellow melody and high-energy playing.  Fans screamed in support as the guitarists mercilessly shredded and everyone in the crowd that night could agree, we wished “the music never stopped.”

The next day, The Main Squeeze it up a Saturday night fever by kicking off the day’s lineup.  The Floozies laid down the funk with a practically flawless show and thrilled the crowd by bringing out The Shady Horns for a portion of their set.  However, Lettuce’s closing set that night stole the weekend.  They began by immersing the crowd in smooth, psychedelic jams that highlighted the band’s incredible flow and cohesiveness.  The energy increased and Lettuce played perfectly to the people of St. Augustine with rich reggae undertones and an Exodus cover.  Antwaun Stanley joined the band for a cover of Vulfpeck’s "Funky Duck," which was an outright dance party in every sense of the word.

Even though attendance was slightly lower compared to last year, Fool’s Paradise proved again that they are a festival force to be reckoned with and drove home the fact that we’ll never miss this weekend as long as it’s put on.  Fool’s has everything you could ever want in a fest—a gorgeous venue, incredible crowd, stellar staff, unbeatable vibes, and sounds supplied by funk’s finest.  Honestly, what more could you ask for?

Todd Nance's New Project 'Interstellar Boys' Announce Summer Tour Dates March 31, 2017 14:55

COLLABORATION OF VETERAN MUSICIANS BRING DECADES OF EXPERIENCE TO NEW BAND HITTING THE ROAD IN SUMMER 2017

Featuring:

Todd Nance – Drums, Vocals Sam Holt – Guitar, Vocals

Daniel Hutchens - Vocals, Guitar John Neff – Pedal Steel

Jerry Joseph - Vocals, Guitar Jon Mills - Bass

The Interstellar Boys are first and foremost borne from a collection of friendships. Musical friendships that date back as far as 30 years. Todd Nance, Daniel Hutchens, Jerry Joseph, Sam Holt, John Neff and Jon Mills have shared stages and songs over the years and now form a new band that draws on those decades of collaboration. Todd Nance brings undeniable experience and depth to the band as a founding member/drummer/songwriter of Widespread Panic. Daniel Hutchens has been a driving force with the band Bloodkin for 29 years (and counting) and is widely recognized as one of the South’s great modern day songwriters. Jerry Joseph and his various bands have been recording and touring on a national/international scale since the 80’s. Jerry’s expertise as a musician/songwriter is as unquestionable as his passion for sharing the power of music. He has recently toured and taught music in such far-flung places as Afghanistan, Ghana and is soon to perform in Iraq. Sam Holt brings a reverence and intensity to playing the guitar that energizes the faithful fans of this community in a way that is second to none. John Neff (formerly of Drive-By Truckers) is the secret weapon that adds depth and soul via the pedal steel. And Mr. Jon Mills (professor emeritus of bass in the Athens, GA music scene) is the glue that keeps the whole thing tastefully held together.

Fans and industry veterans alike will find this band a compelling draw for its maiden voyage this summer season as evidenced by comments from Raleigh, NC based talent buyer Chris Malarkey (Lincoln Theatre): “When I was first approached about the possibility of bringing this lineup to town I thought ‘man, this is too good to be true’. The thought of some of the most talented musicians to ever to walk through the doors of my venues joining forces not just for a show, but for a new band, seemed farfetched at best. But, somehow, someway the stars aligned, schedules were cleared and plans were made. The Interstellar Boys are real. What I can only describe as a dream band is booked.”

This accomplished group of musicians and songwriters look to explore new terrain touring together this summer….and have their eyes on the horizon to create new material, get into the studio and keep pushing boundaries as they have always done.

Backup Planet Reveals Official Artwork For Sophomore Album 'Reactions' March 30, 2017 15:26

One of the southeast's hottest up-and-coming bands, Backup Planet, is gearing up for an exciting weekend, as the band is set to release its sophomore studio album Reactions on Friday, April 1st.  Since the release of their debut album Element in March of 2015, Backup Planet has established itself as a pillar of the southern jam scene, while touring across the country and making appearances at numerous major music festivals. Today, the band has revealed the official album artwork for Reactions, which will be available for download and streaming through all major online music outlets tomorrow.

Recorded in Birmingham, AL with producer Jason Eglin, Reactions perfectly captures the diverse nature and truly dynamic sound of the Backup Planet experience.  Gavin Donati (guitar) and Ben Cooper (keyboards/vocals) set the tone with the album's explosive opening track "Bad Man," which carries over into the heavy-hitting "Different Life." The album's title track "Reactions" carries a super nostalgic vibe, showcases the band's emphasis on harmony vocals, and leaves plenty of room for some serious, wailing guitar solos.  "Looking Up" and "Little Mingo" give a glimpse into the band's more mellow, bluesy side, while giving each band member an equal chance to shine.

Those familiar with Backup Planet will recognize "Destination Earth," a true rock ballad which has been in the band's rotation for several years but has been rewritten and completely reworked for the album.  Bassist Blake Gallant takes on lead vocals for "Waist High Jack," which you will easily find yourself singing along with by the second chorus.  "Sublimation" makes for another explosive track, full of heavy guitar riffs and some mind blowing work from drummer Chris Potocik.  Cooper saves some of his finest vocals and funkiest playing for the albums final track, "All In," which features a nice balance of just about every sound Backup Planet has to offer.

Backup Planet has the rare ability to lock in an audience from the opening notes of any performance.  There is never a "down moment" at any point with this band, and Reactions perfectly captures that unique energy.  This album has the feel of the truly dynamic Backup Planet experience, while also showcasing just the right amount of mainstream appeal.  In a world with an endless amount of new music, Reactions is without a doubt one of the most well-rounded, complete albums you will come across this year.  Expect big things from Backup Planet in 2017, as this album may very well be the catalyst that takes things to the next level

Regarding the overall concept of the album artwork, the band had the following to say:

  •  "The album is a culmination of the events of the last year.  The band was hit by a drunk driver and lost their van, instruments, everything.  On top of that their next van got robbed and a lot of gear was taken.  Episode 3 of the Countdown explains it well: Episode 3 live.  The entire year was a reaction to the culmination of those events and choosing to not only overcome adversity and just get back on our feet, but to come out swinging and make a statement.  The artwork and the album itself is meant to represent a reaction or the concept of reactions.  Of course there is a Space theme running through almost everything Backup Planet does, so this is meant to conjure images and ideas of Space but it is also meant to be a visual representation of an event, and how all events trigger reactions.  We tried to articulate the concept of a how an event triggers reactions that cause outcomes in all directions."

Blackbird Pickers

Blackbird Pickers is a group of friends that enjoy playing music together. The band is located in the Southeast with the closest major city being Montgomery, AL. We didn’t all meet at the same time but being in a band is very much about playing with people that you feel you’ve known a lifetime. We are a close knit group that loves celebrating life and the moments that should be remembered. Between all of us we have played music in about every environment you can imagine.

Music is a powerful thing that can sway a mood, create ambience, and make a moment more memorable than may seem possible. Creating these moments is one of the biggest perks of our job. Being part of them is always very special and something we strive for every time we play.

So, that’s it. We love playing music because of the relationships it lends itself to. We love that it’s an art form that allows us to be a part of other people's life, love, and laughter.

Jason Givens and The Wanderers

Jason Givens and the Wanderers are a southern rock and country group from Montgomery, Alabama. The group has played all over the Southeastern United States for the past 6 years, but Jason Givens (singer and guitarist) and Chris Kratzer (bass) have been making music together since high school. In addition to long time drummer Andy Martin the group also features pianist Stefan Slade and multi-instrumentalist Fowler Holding. With complex harmonies reminiscent of the Doobie Brothers, the band credits the likes of Waylon Jennings, Ryan Adams, .38 Special, and Taylor Swift with shaping their signature high-energy southern rock flavor. Jason Givens and the Wanderers most recently competed in the 2016 Nashville Next Regional Finals.

Jessie Lynn

Since entering the country music scene in 2005, Jessie Lynn has performed at venues and events across the southeast including the Alabama State Senate, Auburn University Homecoming, Alabama Department of Agriculture’s SASDA Conference, Montgomery Biscuits Center Stage Alabama, The Hank Williams Museum, NCAA Division II World Series, and Canaan International’s Premiere Showcase.

Jessie Lynn released her first single, “Boots N Bling It’s a Cowgirl Thing”, in February 2016 to internet radio stations where it earned #1 rankings and was named March 2016 Akademia Best Country/Rock Song. This single earned her several 2016 nominations Female Song of the Year and Female Rising Star by The Josie Awards Show and five categories on The Nashville Universe Awards Show.

Since releasing her album, A Softer Side of Country, Jessie Lynn has opened for The Oak Ridge Boys and was named the 2016 Alabama Music Association Female Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year. Jessie Lynn is currently obtaining her Master's degree from Auburn University and is looking forward to seeing her fans at upcoming events!

Act of Congress

Blackberry Possum Joins CukoRakko SpringFest Lineup March 23, 2017 13:13

Photo by Jordan Kirkland: Live & Listen

While the lineup for CukoRakko Music & Arts Festival's 2017 SpringFest features a heavy presence of jam, funk, and jazz, festival organizers recognize that the element of music which put Horse Pens 40 on the map is undoubtedly bluegrass. With that being said, organizers are extremely pleased to once again welcome Blackberry Possum as the latest addition to the weekend's roster (May 5th-7th).  In the likeness of Leftover Salmon, Blackberry Possum has the ability to bring to the stage a jamgrass and newgrass appeal, but like traditional bluegrass arrangements can turn on a dime with a standard bluegrass song.  This aspect alone has made BBP a CukoRakko favorite over the years and sparked numerous requests for the band's return in 2017.  The Alabama roots run deep with this group, which features a lineup of seasoned musicians who have been honing their craft for well over 40 years.

Blackberry Possum is Tony Brook, Wildman Steve, Brian Fowler, Jimbo Leach, John Boyd and Tom Burgess playing bluegrass, newgrass, country and originals.  They will perform at CukoRakko Music & Arts Festival's SpringFest on Saturday, May 6th.

  • As someone born and raised in Hamilton, the recent revitalization of the city has been something inspiring to witness. Getting the opportunity the last few summers to perform with my band The Revivalists at the Rivers Edge Amphitheater has always been a highlight of my year and a great opportunity to reconnect with family and old friends. The Big River Get Down will serve as a way to help increase the profile of Hamilton, while bringing something unique directly to the people of the city. Over the coming years we hope to sustain and grow this event along with the continuing renaissance of Hamilton to bolster the economy and provide yet another pillar of confidence and pride for the community.
  • This year, all proceeds will benefit Hamilton's 4th of July celebration. Half of the proceeds will be donated towards the fireworks and the other half will be donated to the 4th of July concert at RiversEdge.

Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Go In Depth On Guitars With Rig Rundown March 22, 2017 23:06

Photo by Jordan Kirkland: Live & Listen

One of rock and roll's most powerful couples, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, seem to be everywhere these days, and the Tedeschi Trucks Band has easily become one of the hottest touring acts in the country.  The two, along with TTB bassist Tim Lefebvre, recently sat down with Premier Guitar's John Bohlinger before their 3-show residency at the Ryman in Nashville. While this might not be a gear-heavy band, there’s plenty of soul, groove, and vibe.

Derek Trucks is not one to switch guitars. A longtime SG man, his current No. 1 is a prototype of a 2013 Gibson Dickey Betts signature custom shop SG—but with actual vintage PAF pickups. Trucks keeps a similar SG as a backup, but only plays it when he breaks a string, and then he usually switches back as soon as the string has been replaced.  Susan Tedeschi’s No. 1 is a stock 1970 Stratocaster that was a gift from Derek after he inquired about what her dream guitar would be. She keeps it strung up with D’Addario (.011–.049) strings. Tim brings a pair of basses on the road with Tedeschi Trucks. Here is his custom CallowHill bass nicknamed the “asshole bass” by the late luthier Tim Cloonan. Hidden underneath the pickguard is a sopabar pickup that can be mixed in.

See below for the full 30-minute session with Tedeschi, Trucks, and Lefebvre, and make sure to visit the band's Facebook page and official website for all of the latest TTB news.

Backup Planet Launches Video Series For Upcoming Album Release March 21, 2017 16:39

BACKUP PLANET--the Nashville-based quartet who write arena-size anthems echoing with progressive intricacy, funk swagger, and even a little metallic edge--have partnered with RELIX.com for an intimate video series, “The Backup Planet Album Countdown. Each clip takes an in-depth look at the band’s evolution and recording process for their upcoming sophomore full-length album REACTIONS, with the first installment posted today (3/21). Subsequent videos will be unveiled as the album’s March 31 release date approaches. Click here to watch.

“The last year has been quite a ride for Backup Planet,” says Gavin Donati (guitar/vocals). “From surrounding ourselves with some of the leaders of the Jam Band Scene to surviving a terrible wreck when our van was hit by a drunk driver, this album tells our story of overcoming adversity and taking things to the next level.  We truly poured our hearts and souls into the album, and we wanted to share that with our fans through this exclusive video series”

In support of the album, BACKUP PLANET will continue on the road with headlining shows, and their in-progress 21-date co-headline tour alongside fellow American rock band The Heavy Pets dubbed “The Heavy Planet Tour,” on Thursday, March 23 in Huntsville, AL at The Downstairs Connector Upcoming tour stops include Birmingham, Memphis, Atlanta, Nashville, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, NY at Brooklyn Bowl (presented by RELIX), Raleigh, Knoxville and New Orleans among others, before wrapping May 4 at Sundown at Granada in Dallas, TX. See below for full itinerary. For more information and where to purchase tickets, visit: backupplanetmusic.com/events.

The 10-track REACTIONS--the first album from the band since teaming with Red Light Management who are applying all resources to elevate BACKUP PLANET as a next-level band on the scene--was recorded at Syncromesh Studios in Birmingham, AL with producer Jason Elgin [Collective Soul, Maylene & The Sons of Disaster] and showcases the band’s top-shelf musicianship and songwriting. These strengths are spotlighted in songs like “Little Mingo,” “A Different Life” and another album standout, the haunting and heartfelt “Sublimation,” that’s  a simmering stew of impressive fretwork, percussion and towering vocals. BACKUP PLANET--Ben Cooper [keys, vocals], Chris Potocik [drums, vocals], Gavin Donati [guitar, vocals], and Blake Gallant [bass, vocals]--released their full-length debut, Element, during 2015 and have shared the stage with the likes of The Revivalists, Papadosio, and more, in addition to headlining countless packed shows. RELIX proclaimed them “On The Verge,” and one fateful gig led to signing with powerhouse management firm Red Light Management [Dave Matthews Band, My Morning Jacket, Dopapod, Phish].

Official Bio: Primus
-
"Tommy the Cat." "John the Fisherman." "Jerry Was A Race Car Driver." "My Name is Mud." "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver." Yessiree, Primus is responsible for some of the most cutting edge and original rock music of the 1990's. And now, the definitive Primus line-up - singer/bassist Les Claypool, guitarist Larry LaLonde, and drummer Tim Alexander - is back together and planning on getting the worldwide masses bobbing up and down in unison once more.
-
Although originally formed in 1984, it was not until shortly before the end of the decade that the aforementioned classic line-up was solidified. With most hard rock/heavy metal acts at the time either neatly falling into either "thrash" or "glam" categories, Primus joined a variety of underground bands that refused to be pigeonholed (and by the early '90s, had fully infiltrated the mainstream) - merging metal, funk, alternative, punk, country, roots rock, and experimental music, along with Claypool's penchant for witty and often humorous storytelling lyrics.
-
Building a large and loyal following first in and around San Francisco (before eventually, going global), Primus kicked things off with a string of releases that are now considered classic alt-rock titles - 1989's 'Suck on This,' 1990's 'Frizzle Fry,' 1991's 'Sailing the Seas of Cheese,' 1993's 'Pork Soda,' and 1995's 'Tales from the Punchbowl.' Along the way, Primus toured with some of rock's biggest names (Jane's Addiction, Public Enemy, Rush, U2, etc.), headlined the third-ever Lollapalooza Festival, and issued a variety of crafty music videos, which stood out in sharp contrast to the ultra-seriousness of most other video clips at the time.
-
Alexander exited Primus in 1996, but returned in 2003, in time for an EP/DVD set, 'Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People,' and a sold out reunion tour, that lasted over the next few years, before the drummer departed once more. But as Claypool got to work on putting together a forthcoming book about the band's history, Les began longing for the days of when Alexander's unmistakable and powerful drumming provided the beat. A phone call was placed, a conversation ensued, and before you could say, "Here come the bastards," the Claypool-LaLonde-Alexander line-up was back in business. Plans to tour the world over and offering up new music are already in place. Be forewarned…here they come!
