Electronic rock band LCD Soundsystem has been working its way back into the spotlight as of late, following the band's recent residency at the brand new Brooklyn Steel venue in Brooklyn, NY.  This past weekend, the band was called on by Saturday Night Live, where they performed two of the brand new songs debuted in Brooklyn ("Call The Police" and "American Dream").  This week, front man James Murphy updated the band's loyal base on the status of the band's upcoming album, ""I insist that there is vinyl on the day it's released (because … well … because I'm an old person)," Murphy added. "It's been one of the most enjoyable records to make in my life, if not the most fun ever (I think it is, for sure, the happiest I've ever been making a record). So it will be sad in some ways to see it leave the house etc."

Hampton 70: A Musical Celebration Like No Other May 4, 2017 15:45

Photos by Dave Vann  -  Words by Jordan Kirkland

When I heard that there would be a 70th birthday celebration for Col. Bruce Hampton at The Fox Theatre, I knew that I had to be there. After reading through the star-studded lineup, there was no doubt that this would be one of the most unique musical experiences of my life. With members of Widespread Panic, Phish, Aquarium Rescue Unit, The Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule, Blues Traveler, and so many more scheduled to perform, the possibilities for this show were endless. This lineup was a true testament to the immeasurable influence that Col. Bruce Hampton made on the world of music, and the ultimate experience was one that no one could prepare for.

The show got started just after 7:30 PM, with the evening's emcee introducing a cast featuring many frequent Col. Bruce collaborators, such as Darren Stanley, Matt Slocum, Carter Herring, and Ike Stubblefield.  The Colonel was eventually brought to the stage, wearing a blue blazer, and led the group through "There Was A Time."  The show's first featured guest was Oliver Wood, who was backed by Slocum, Darick Campbell, Duane Trucks (Widespread Panic) and others. As soon as Wood began working through two originals from The Wood Brothers catalog ("Sing About It" and "Postcards From Hell"), it became apparent that anything was fair game. Before long, Susan Tedeschi was on stage trading lines with Wood.  San Diego Padres' pitcher Jake Peavy and 14-year-old guitar prodigy Brandon “Taz” Niederauer were then introduced and led the charge through "Oh Pretty Woman" and "Shake Your Hips."

Next up was a serving a blues and jamgrass royalty, as Rev. Jeff Mosier took the stage alongside John Popper of Blues Traveler and Vince Herman and Drew Emmitt of Leftover Salmon. This combo, backed by Trucks, Kevin Scott, Emil Wrestler, Matt Slocum would eventually be joined by legendary drummer Jeff Sipe, aka Apt. Q-258 for a rousing take on "She Caught The Katy." It wasn't long before Kevin Kinney, Hardy Morris, Todd Snider, Peter Buck, Dave Schools were brought out to continue the magic. At this point, it was nearly impossible to keep up with who we had seen versus who was yet to come, but we would be quickly reminded as Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule), Chuck Leavell (Allman Brothers Band / Rolling Stones), Jon Fishman (Phish), and saxophonist Karl Denson took the stage. The energy reached a new level during "Rip This Joint," and the combo of Fishman and Sipe during "Compared To What" and "Good Morning 'Lil School Girl" was as heavy as it gets.

Duane Trucks stepped in for Sipe and joined Fishman behind the kit for "More Trouble Everyday," which would lead up to one of the evening's many highlights. The cast of Derek Trucks, Haynes, Leavell, Schools, Buck, Fishman, and (Duane) Trucks played the Allman Brothers Band's "Jessica" to absolute perfection. John Bell of Widespread Panic made his first appearance for "Time Is Free," and would stick around for "Don't Cry Not More," which would also feature Tedeschi on vocals.

Watch the performance of "Jessica" here:

As the show proceeded into its third hour, the Colonel returned to the stage for the evening's final performances. After leading the way through "Yield Not To Temptation," Hampton took the microphone for one of his long-time staples, "Fixin' To Die."  Watching the Colonel turning, pointing, and singing those words to so many of his oldest friends and collaborators will forever be a surreal memory.  He would remain on stage for the final three songs of the nearly four hour set: "Don't Go In The Room," "Space Is The Place," and a cover of Cream's "I'm So Glad" that had an especially spiritual feel to it.

After the stage briefly cleared, nearly forty performers returned to the stage for one last nod to the godfather of jam. The encore began with in classic fashion, as ARU drummer Jeff Sipe led the massive group through "Zambi Military Ensemble," creating the feel of am early 90's Aquarium Rescue Unit Show. This epic celebration would end with none other than "Turn On Your Lovelight," with Tedeschi, Wood, and Hampton rotating verses.

As Colonel walked over to young Taz (Brandon Niederauer) and signaled him to solo, we would all witness the unthinkable. Col. Bruce appeared to take a knee, as if giving praise to the young prodigy, and proceeded to slowly, peacefully lay down behind him (with an arm propped onto a monitor). This was a man known for his wild theatrics, giving no reason for initial concern as he lied motionless on the stage. Video footage shows those surrounding him smiling and laughing at each other, waiting for his dramatic rise for the song's conclusion. But as several minutes passed with no movement, a feeling of concern was felt throughout the theatre, and it became evident that this was no joke. Several people rushed from the side stage to check on Hampton, the music abruptly stopped, and Billy Bob Thornton quickly addressed the crowd as the curtains were frantically closed.

Those closer to the stage could see the immediate medical attention being applied to Col. Bruce, as the majority of us exited the building in total shock and confusion. Multiple ambulances were on the scene within minutes, and many witnessed Hampton being taken away in a frenzy to the hospital. Within the next two hours, the news began to spread that world had lost Col. Bruce Hampton. I can honestly say that this was a wave of emotions that I'd never dreamed of experiencing. The entire evening was surreal; witnessing so many musical heroes on stage together.

Watching the Colonel get carried off stage is an image that I'll never forget. But as the tributes and memoirs have piled in this week, this ending does seem beautifully poetic in many ways. Col. Bruce left this earthly life during the closing moments of his own musical celebration. His final act was showcasing and praising one of music's brightest young stars, while surrounded by 30+ world class musicians who considered him one of their greatest influences. Hampton 70 was truly a celebration like no other; honoring one of the most unique souls to ever walk this planet. While his presence will be missed by so many, we should all take comfort in knowing that his influence will be felt across the musical spectrum far beyond our time.

Setlist: Hampton 70 - A Celebration of Col. Bruce Hampton - 05.01.17

The Jauntee Announces Extensive Summer Tour May 3, 2017 08:48

-
Hot off a Midwest and Colorado run, Boston’s own The Jauntee are touring the East Coast again this Summer, and we've got all the details for you. The dynamic, improvisational quartet have been stacking up the miles over the last few tours and this one is no different. The Jauntee will see return dates at venues like American Beauty in NYC, The Camel in Richmond, and Aisle 5 in Atlanta, and a bi-weekly residency in July at The 8x10 in Baltimore. The band’s long awaited return to Florida and a late-night set at this year’s Peach Festival have also been announced. Perhaps most exciting and close to home,  The Jauntee will play a 2-night stand at The Bridge Sound and Stage in Cambridge which will be a live recording session for their follow up album to last year’s Excelsior. The band plans to release more on this intimate experience soon.
-
Hailing from Boston and as graduates of Berklee School of Music, The Jauntee have solidified a dedicated following through playing staple venues across the country and several national festivals including Catskill Chill, Disc Jam, Peach Fest and more. The band is perhaps more widely recognized for their relentless and extensive touring schedule which has resulted in sold out shows on the East Coast, across the Midwest, and as far West as Colorado. A focus on live improvisation, setlist variety, and musical exploration means every show is different from the last, truly making The Jauntee a live act to see again and again.
-
Drawing influence from a wide variety of acts, The Jauntee's improvisational landscape spans multiple genres, from rock and jazz all the way to bluegrass, psychedelic, and ambient. Their willingness to explore genres, abandon all song structure, and dive into 'the weird' sets them apart from the average upcoming jam band. They aim to push the boundaries of improvisation, embrace the moment and engage the audience. With a quickly growing loyal fanbase, an ever-expanding song catalog and an inclination for open ended improvisation, The Jauntee promises to deliver a unique experience.

Tonight only, movie theaters across the country will host screenings of The Grateful Dead Movie in honor of the film's 40th anniversary. A short feature of the band's performance at Barton Hall (Cornell University) on May 8th, 1977 will also be shown prior to the film.  The Grateful Dead Movie, released in 1977 and co-directed by Jerry Garcia and Leon Gast, is a film that captures the Dead during an five-night run at Winterland in San Francisco in October of 1974.  The film features Dead classics such as “Dark Star,” “U.S. Blues,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Casey Jones,” “Playing In The Band” and “Sugar Magnolia."  Click here to find your theater and purchase tickets in advance.

These concerts marked the beginning of a hiatus, with the October 20, 1974 show billed as "The Last One". The band would return to touring in 1976. The film features the "Wall of Sound" concert sound system that the Dead used for all of 1974. The movie also portrays the burgeoning Deadhead scene. Holly Bowling Featured On Tom Marshall's 'Under The Scales' Podcast April 19, 2017 11:57

-
-
Longtime Phish lyricist Tom Marshall has garnered much attention from the jam community in recent months with his new podcast, Under The Scales.  On the latest episode, Marshall sits down with renowned classical pianist Holly Bowling, who has become a household name in the jam/festival community in recent years for her piano interpretations of Phish and Grateful Dead tunes. According to Marshall, Holly Bowling stops by the studio to educate us musically — my piano has never sounded better!"
-
Specifics discussed in this episode include live interpretations of Phish's "Tweezer," "The Wedge," and "Sleep."  This podcast, which has featured many major names from across the Phish community (including Trey Anastasio), is a must-listen for all Phish enthusiasts.  See below to stream Episode 19 with Holly Bowling today.

-
Official Bio: Holly Bowling
-
Holly Bowling is a classically trained pianist who began playing piano at the age of five. There’s one major distinction, however, that separates her from other similarly studied musicians. That is Holly’s devotion to the legendary rock band Phish. Having attended over 300 shows by the Burlington-based quartet, she became obsessed by their famous rendition of “Tweezer” from Lake Tahoe on July 31, 2013. It led Holly to transcribe this 37-minute improvisational masterpiece note-for-note and arrange it for solo piano. The process, both painstaking and fulfilling, inspired her to transform other Phish songs and well-known live jams into solo piano interpretations.
-
Holly’s breathtaking renditions of Phish classics like “It’s Ice,” “The Squirming Coil” and “Harry Hood” serve not only as a tribute to the modern day kings of jam, but stand on their own as fully developed classical pieces. The past year has seen Holly expand her repertoire into the realm of the Grateful Dead, including an “Eyes of the World” based on the band’s spectacular exploratory June 18, 1974 performance at Freedom Hall. Using classical piano technique to reinterpret these jamband luminaries, Holly’s live performances infuse new with old, tradition with surreal, and creates a concert experience like nothing else in the music world.

Official Bio: SunSquabi
-
A three-piece suit, live electronic experience. Hailing from Colorado, SunSquabi has been picking up steam after a breakout year in 2016, marked by their debut release on GRiZ’s All Good Records. The bands 7-track EP “Odyssey” takes listeners through a laidback electronic, funk fueled journey. Joining the band on their latest EP, Big Gigantic & GRiZ himself lend their talents to the project. Continuing to shatter expectations of what a “Live-Electronic” band should be, SunSquabi effortlessly transitions between synth-bass heavy vibes to smooth jam-like grooves.
-
SunSquabi spent the better part of 2016 touring across North America making debut appearances and show stealing performances at festivals including… Electric Forest, High Sierra, Camp Bisco, Hulaween & more! The live-electronic trio is gearing up for their biggest year yet, including stops at Red Rocks, Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas and their largest headline tour to date!
-
2017 will see SunSquabi’s second release on All Good Records, The “Deluxe” EP, out later this Spring. “Pygmy Up” the lead single featuring Russ Liquid was released at the top of year, followed by “Cinnamon” with Late Night Radio. Look out for the “Deluxe” EP to pick up where “Odyssey” left off and continue to solidify the SunSquabi sound.

Watch moe. + Members Of Turkuaz Cover Talking Heads On Jam Cruise April 18, 2017 11:51

If you pay any attention to the jam/festival scene, you've most likely heard many epic stories from Jam Cruise an annual five-day, music cruise, featuring jam, funk, rock, jazz, and electronic performances. The message from those who attend each year seem to have the same message: "the greatest party in the world."  Jam Cruise consistently features many of the music scene's hottest acts, and this year was no different.  The collaborations came early and often, including when members of Turkuaz and Nate Wilson (Percy Hill) joined moe.'s Pool Deck set for an amazing take on the Talking Head's classic "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)"

Jam Cruise recently released pro-shot, multi-cam, HD video footage of the performance, which features moe., Nate Wilson (keyboards), Turkuaz vocalists Shira Elias and Sammi Garrett as well as the Brooklyn funk band’s horn section of Greg Sanderson, Chris Brouwers and Josh Schwartz. You'll also notice moe. percussionist Jim Laughlin stepping up on bass, while Rob Derhak focuses strictly on lead vocals.

Watch A High School Percussion Ensemble Perform Phish's "Divided Sky" April 17, 2017 14:31

As reported by JamBase last month, the Naugatuck High School Percussion Ensemble in Naugatuck, Connecticut has been working on a rendition of Phish's "Divided Sky" unlike any you've heard before. Trey Anastasio and Phish not only gave Naugatuck High School their full blessing for the performance, but long-time Anastasio collaborator Don Hart even helped out with the compositions. Fortunately for us all, videographer MKDevo has captured some amazing, multi-cam HD/4k footage of the ensemble's final rehearsal of the complex Phish original.  See below to watch the performance in full, as well as remarks from MKDevo explaining the amount of work that went into this project.

  • Quotes from videographer MKDevo via Facebook:

"You may have seen Naugatuck High School Percussion featured on JamBase last month, while working on their rendition of Phish's "Divided Sky". A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending their final rehearsal of the season, where I captured this version - the result of months of hard work.

Huge congratulations to everyone involved with this, especially my good friend, instructor Donny Binette, who had this vision many years ago and finally was able to see it through to completion. There are so many moving parts, as you can see in this video, and these kids did an incredible job!

The ensemble began learning the piece in January 2017. They typically rehearsed 2-3 times per week, anywhere between 3-7 hours, depending on the day. This recording was captured in the final week of their competitive season. They achieved a final score of 90.9 at the MAC Championships."

Watch Herbie Hancock & Trey Anastasio Record At The Barn (2004) April 12, 2017 21:23

In celebration of the 77th birthday of the original funk pioneers, Herbie Hancock, we're taking a look back at some of our favorite footage from over the years. One of the most intriguing videos floating out there highlights Hancock with Trey Anastasio at "The Barn," the Phish frontman's famed recording studio in the Green Mountains near Burlington, VT.  The Barn was home to many Phish recordings in the late 90's and early 2000's, before it became home to the Seven Below Arts Initiative, a non-profit organization formed to advance arts education in Vermont. Other notable artists to record at The Barn include Béla Fleck, John Patitucci, DJ Logic, Toots & the Maytals, Tony Levin, Umphrey's McGee, RAQThe Slip, John Medeski, Jerry Douglas, Patty LaBelle, Leo Kottke, Jim Carrey, Addison Groove Project, and Touchpants.

This legendary recording session occurred back in 2004, when Hancock ventured to The Barn along with Steve Jordan (drums), Cyro Baptista (percussion), John Pattituci (bass), and Jennifer Hartswick (trumpet).  The video below showcases some amazing dialogue between the two, as well as the planning, arrangement, and recording of “Gelo Na Montanha” from Hancock's 2005 album Possibilities.

Catching Up With JoJo Hermann Of Widespread Panic April 12, 2017 11:16

Interview by Jordan Kirkland: Live & Listen

Photos by Craig Baird: Home Team Photography

Just last weekend, we had the opportunity to sit down with one of our longtime musical heroes, John "JoJo" Hermann of Widespread Panic.  Shortly after JoJo and his band, JoJo's Slim Wednesday, arrived at Zydeco in Birmingham (AL), we had the pleasure of hanging out backstage and getting the latest scoop on a different but certainly exciting year for the famed musician. JoJo's Slim Wednesday was preparing for the second of a seven-night run, which kicked off in Oxford (MS) and concludes this Thursday night in Augusta (GA).

Let's start off by talking a little bit about Slim Wednesday. How did this project come together, and how does it differ from the 'Mardi Gras band'?
-
JoJo: Well, this is basically a reformation of the Mardi Gras Band, but about a year ago, Bill Elder, who is handling the guitar duties, and frankly, a lot of the lead vocals, he woke up after Fat Tuesday and said, "Man, I guess it's Slim Wednesday."  That name just kind of stuck I guess.
-
So, this is essentially the same lineup, just playing under a different name?
-
JoJo: It is. It is basically the same lineup. Ben Clark (trumpet) is new to us.  He plays a lot around Nashville, and then Jovan Quallo (sax), who is just a great, great sax player, is also new.  But yes, it's essentially the same lineup. Greg Bryant on bass, Kevin Mabin on drums, who has been with us from the get-go.
-
Very cool. So I wanted to talk about the material you guys are playing on this tour. What type of song rotation can fans expect from Slim Wednesday?
-
JoJo:  Well, when we first started, the Mardi Gras Band was essentially a Professor Long Hair tribute band.  All we did was "Fess," as he is affectionately known.  Then, we added some Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, The Meters...so it's very New Orleans.  We all have a shared love of New Orleans music, food, and the whole vibe.  So, it really came out of that.  We've added about 8 or 10 originals, so we're kind of breaking those in on this run. There's a little wood shedding going on right now. It's a lot of fun though.
-
-
I would imagine so. And I know you guys kind of kicked off the year out on Jam Cruise. You always hear people talk about how that it's the greatest party in the world. I haven't been lucky enough to attend yet, but it's definitely on the bucket list. Tell me a little bit about that experience this year.
-
JoJo:  Oh yeah...I think everyone was just so blown away by the music, you know? You get on that boat, and you're thinking about this island, or that resort, and just the vacation part of it. But when you get on the boat, it's just the music that blows you away. The Meters were the headliner, and that was so special, but the musicians on that boat are really the best on the planet, you know?  They're all there in the same place, playing all of the time. It's a really amazing event.
-
Absolutely. Did you have a chance to play with many other bands this year?
-
JoJo: Oh yeah. I got to sit in with BIG Something, and I played with George Porter Jr. several times. Who else? Ivan Neville...quite a few of my old friends.
-
I'm sure that was great to have several familiar faces around...several guys that you've been playing with and around for decades now.
-
JoJo: Definitely. It's a great time to get together in such an amazing setting.
-
Well...changing gears just a bit, I'd love to talk a little Widespread Panic. You guys are obviously cutting back on the long, extensive tours this year, but you've already announced quite a few festival dates, as well as the special events like Red Rocks and Halloween. Is this the type of schedule that you see moving forward?
-
JoJo: Yeah, we're still playing a bunch. We're just not on the bus as much. That's really the only difference...at least for this year. I know that. At some point, we'll all get together and talk about next year, but we really haven't gotten there yet. We're just enjoying our time and taking it year by year, you know?
-
-
As you should...so what opportunities have you been able to take advantage of with a lighter touring schedule? Is Slim Wednesday something that would've happened without all this newfound free time?
-
JoJo:  There's no way we would've had the time to do a lot of this extra stuff, like the crawfish boils on this run. I get to eat more crawfish...no doubt.  It's a pretty narrow window, the crawfish season, and it's hard to get good crawfish. That's definitely one result. I recently got to attend my daughter's soccer tournament in Gatlinburg. I definitely wouldn't have been able to do that. So, those kinds of things, you know? (laughs)
=
You can't put a price on those types of experiences, especially spending that type of time with your family. I'm sure it's tough to miss those events.
-
JoJo:  Exactly. When you miss stuff with your kids, you don't get that back. It's gone forever. So yeah, there is a little more sense of urgency with family then there is with touring (laughs).
-
I can imagine. So, you guys are about a year and a half removed from the release of the most recent album, Street Dogs. How would you say that the songwriting process evolved for you and the band over the years? Will the lighter year equate to more writing?
-
JoJo:  I'm definitely spending a lot of time at home on my piano...writing plenty of music. Where it lands? I don't really know. It might land with Slim Wednesday. It might land with Widespread. You know, when you write, it's not necessarily for anything specific.  I just take time and write new music, usually while I'm at home. I really don't know where it will land though.  We've been writing for Slim Wednesday though. We have a new song called "The Reptile Show." We've got a bunch of new songs, actually. I'm really excited about playing these new ones. It's really fun to bring out new songs and play them to a new audience. That never gets old.  There is no better feeling that writing a new song, playing it for the first time in front of a crowd, and watching people dancing to it. It never gets old.
-
That's amazing. One other thing I wanted to ask you about is the whole setlist process. Obviously, so much attention is paid to this from the Panic fan base. People have high expectations for how things are going to play out each night.  Can you share a little insight on what goes into the selection process?
-
JoJo: It's pretty random, honestly. There is a color system. I know that. If we played a song four nights ago, it's red. Three nights is green. Two nights is purple. Something like that. So, the songs are kind of kept track of that way. Every night is different though. People do throw in their own ideas as well. "What about this? What about that?" It just ends up coming together.
-
-
Do you see the change in schedule effecting this process at all?  Does that play into effect when you guys haven't necessarily been playing for a straight week or two?
-
JoJo: Oh yeah...there is still a consciousness about making sure we don't play the same set as we did say a month ago. That's still in there. There are people looking after those things, thankfully. If we repeat a song, believe me, someone will let us know. (laughs)
-
That's for sure. People are always paying attention to the details. So, before we wrap things up, let's circle back to Slim Wednesday. Tonight is just night two of a seven night run for this band. What is it that makes playing these types of shows so unique and special, as opposed to the major arenas and amphitheaters that you're accustomed to?
-
JoJo: You know...this is a wood shedding tour, which means that we're getting together, writing, and it's a very creative process. I'm really, really into that. And it's not just one song, but it's like ten songs. So, it's really, really fun. I'm enjoying that process, and it's something that I think everyone is really enjoying.  Last night at Proud Larry's (Oxford), we just had a blast. I think we debuted like six new songs that we had never played. It's fun. That's all I can say. It's a lot of fun.
-
I'm guessing that it's somewhat of a refreshing, different feel than what has become the norm...
-
JoJo: For sure. Like I said, it never gets old. And with Widespread, we do that everyday. We get in the rehearsal room and come up with something that we haven't done before. That's basically what we're trying to do every night. We try to do something that people aren't expecting...something different. That's what keeps it fun. That's what keeps us engaged.
-
That's obviously been a successful formula over the years (laughs).
-
JoJo: (laughs) Yeah...I hope so. We're still here. I'm just thankful for everyday right now.
-
Well, thanks so much for taking the time to sit down and chat for a few. I can't wait to see what Slim Wednesday is all about tonight.
-
JoJo: Absolutely. Thanks so much, Jordan.
