Widespread Panic and Umphrey's McGee Join Forces Once Again (Video) June 21, 2015 14:12

(Photo by Josh Timmermans - Noble Visions - 10.15.13 - Daniel Island, SC)

The weekend run with Umphrey's McGee and Widespread Panic continued last night at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantaugh, NY.  One of the jam scenes most exciting rising acts, TAUK, was also on the bill as the opening act.  The collaborations began with Joel Cummins of Umphrey's McGee (keyboards) joining TAUK for their always entertaining take on The Beatles' "I Want You (She's So Heavy)".  Umphrey's then took the stage for a red hot set which included "Robot World," "Puppet String," "All In Time," "Ringo," "40's Theme," and "No Diablo," just to name a few.

The crowd at Jones Beach was then treated to a headlining set from Widespread Panic, delivering on many of the classics, like "Diner," "Pigeons," "Stop Breakin' Down Blues," "Bear's Gone Fishin'," and "Visiting Day."  The highlight of the night was saved for last though, as Umphrey's McGee's Joel Cummins, Andy Farag (percussion), and Jake Cinninger (guitar) took the stage with Panic for "Red Hot Mama," a Parliament Funkadelic cover which the Panic faithful can never get enough of.

This was the second time this combination has taken on the P-Funk cover, the last coming on October 15th, 2013, during the second night of a two-night run with Panic and Umphrey's at the Family Circle Cup, just outside of Charleston, SC on Daniel Island.  The two bands move on to Stage AE in Pittsburgh, PA this evening.

An Evening With Zach Deputy - The Sanctuary - Montgomery, AL - 09.09.15 June 17, 2015 23:02

We are pleased to announce that we have added a special Fall concert to our 2015 lineup, featuring Zach Deputy at The Sanctuary in Montgomery, AL on Wednesday, September 9th, 2015.  Zach Deputy is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter based in Savannah, GA and best known for his live looping shows. He describes his style as "island-infused drum n' bass gospel ninja soul."  Tickets will go on sale on our website on Friday, July 3rd.

Deputy has a diverse ethnic background, having Puerto Rican, Irish, African, British, French, and Cherokee heritage, which opens him to influence from Latin, Caribbean, and African music.  Deputy's music is often about "the highs of life," and he has said that songwriting is a way to "take pictures of the things that I want to remind myself of 10 years from now."

Purchase Tickets: An Evening w/ Zach Deputy - Montgomery, AL - Wednesday, Sept. 9th

Deputy began looping when his bass player couldn't make it to a show and Zach decided to use a delay pedal as a looping pedal rather than cancel the gig.  When he plays live, he will loop and layer chord progressions, bass, beat boxing, drum sounds, vocals, and guitar.  He performs with four microphones: a vocal synthesizer for choir sounds; one for high-hat, snare, and back-beat; one for main vocals, and one for vocal bass or bass drum.  His looping shows are known for their variety. "There are so many different ways it can happen. I can loop my guitar first, go into drums or loop a vocal riff first or straight into beat boxing and loop it or just go acoustic. It's very free formed. Every show can be extremely different from another. I try to have little consistency when it comes to my show. I never want to get bored with myself."  His fans will seek out live recordings of particular shows because each is so unique.

Full Interview w/ Zach Deputy - Smith's Olde Bar - 04.25.15

Deputy spends most of the year touring and at one time averaged 300 shows a year.  His performances are mostly one-man-band looping shows, but also include Zach Deputy Band shows and acoustic storyteller shows. He has played many large festivals such as Jam Cruise, Mountain Jam, High Sierra Music FestivalGathering of the Vibes, and All Good Music Festival

We caught up with Zach just a month ago prior to his show at Smith's Olde Bar in Atlanta.  Make sure to check out our recent interview and learn even more about one of our very favorite artists.

Warren Haynes Releases Additional Track From New Album With Railroad Earth June 16, 2015 10:22

Photo via Front & Center

On July 24th, Warren Hayes will release his latest solo album, Ashes and Dust, featuring Railroad Earth as the backing band.  While the album as a whole is a new release, it will feature much material that Haynes has been working on for many years.  Originally planning to record this album with Levon Helm, Leon Russel, and T Bone Wolk, Haynes was forced to set the project aside upon the untimely death of Helm and Wolk.  It was at that time that Haynes went into the studio with Phil Lesh & Friends to record Man In Motion, his second solo studio album which was released May of 2011.  Shortly after this release, Haynes met the members of Railroad Earth when the group opened for the Allmans in Colorado.  After several on stage collaborations, the decision was made to bring Railroad Earth on as the backing band for Ashes and Dust.

Ashes and Dust also features guest appearances by Grace Potter (who duets on a version of Fleetwood Mac's "Gold Dust Woman"), Shawn Colvin and Willie Nelson's harmonica player Mickey Raphael, while former Allmans mates Oteil Burbridge and Marc Quinones join Haynes and Railroad Earth on "Spots Of Time," a song Haynes wrote with Phil Lesh that the Allmans played on stage but never recorded.

In a recent interview with Billboard, Haynes elaborated on the new album:

"I've been writing these kinds of songs my whole life, and as far back as probably six years or something I started thinking about making this kind of record," Haynes tells Billboard about the rootsy and acoustic-flavored set, which he recorded with Railroad Earth. "I just felt like it was time for me to start recording all these songs that were different from the Mule and different from the Allman Brothers and even different from my last album (2011's Man in Motion). The oldest one is almost 30 years old ('Is It Me Or You'), some of them are brand new, and there's a lot in-between."

"My original plan was to either release a double CD or to release two CDs simultaneously," Haynes says. "Then I started thinking, 'No, let's just put out one and then continue the process.' So when I get a break I'm gonna go back in the studio and finish up whatever small details haven't been finished with the stuff we already recorded, and there's five or 10 other songs I'd like to record as well. I just want to keep this process going and another record along this line will come fairly soon, I hope."

Upon the release of Haynes latest group of tour dates last week, he released "Spots Of Time," the lead single from Ashes and Dust.  Just yesterday, an additional track, "Company Man," was released.  "Company Man" hits on a personal note for Haynes, as it is a song about his father.  He gave elaborated on the new tune with Billboard:  "My dad grew up working in a grocery store for 23 years and then the company was gonna close down in the southeast," Haynes recalls. "They said they could relocate him to the West Coast or Northeast or Midwest or something, but he wasn't into it. That's not where his roots were. He didn't want to move his whole family. So he said no and started over and got a job in a factory where kids had more seniority than him. To me it's just a true Southern tale of someone who lived their life by his own standards. He has a lot of conviction, and I've always admired him for it."

Catskill Chill Music Festival has announced moe. as the headliner for “A Farewell to Minglewood” which will take place September 18-20, 2015, in Hancock, New York.  This is the first time that the preeminent New York jam band has performed at Catskill Chill, making it a very special way to close six amazing years at Camp Minglewood before the event moves to a new home in 2016.

Joining moe. at the top of this year’s line-up is Lotus, Zappa Plays Zappa, Lettuce, Electron, The Motet, Dopapod, Kung Fu, Twiddle, Break Science, Turkuaz, The Werks, Particle & Fam, and George Porter Jr. & The Runnin' Pardners.

With a limited capacity, no campsite is more than a few minutes walk to the stages and anyone can make their way up to the front for their favorite sets. Perpetual Groove's Return Exceeds All Expectations June 1, 2015 08:00

Since the announcement of Perpetual Groove's indefinite hiatus in January of 2013, those of us who grew to love this band have been uncertain as to whether or not we would ever see them share the stage again.  The Georgia-born four-piece originated in 1997 at the Savannah College of Art & Design, and quickly became one of the hottest rising acts in the Southeast.  After original band members Joe Stickney and Brett Hinton left the band in 2001, current members Matt McDonald (keyboards) and Albert Suttle (drums) met founding members Brock Butler (guitar/vocals) and Adam Perry (bass) at an open-mic night in Savannah, GA and ultimately joined forces.  The band soon relocated to the musically dominated town of Athens, GA, known for producing the likes of Widespread Panic and REM.  Crowds continuously grew, bigger venues and promoters were calling, and PGroove undoubtedly became a household name in the world of improv/jam rock.

Artist Feature: Will Kimbrough of Willie Sugarcapps May 26, 2015 23:02

Will Kimbrough, the Willie in Willie Sugarcapps, the Alabama coast supergroup appearing at Montgomery's Capri Theatre this Thursday, decided that he wanted to pursue a career in music on May 1, 1976.  That was the night he heard Bruce Springsteen at the civic center in his native Mobile, AL.  Kimbrough, 12 at the time, told himself after hearing the Boss, “This is what I am going to do.”

He was encouraged by his parents, who gave him his first guitar, and his sister, who had a “great album collection,” which included records by the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and Seals & Crofts, among others.  He was also the beneficiary of a great radio station, WABB in Mobile, that played rock and roll hits in the ‘70s.

Kimbrough learned the guitar, formed a band, and started performing as much as he could – at the skating rink, at dances, and at bar mitzvahs.  By 16, he was playing with a band, Ground Zero, at clubs around Mobile, and writing his own songs.  By 19, he had formed Will and the Bushmen, a rock and roll band that landed a deal with a major record label, and toured, almost incessantly, around the country, until they disbanded when Kimbrough was 30.

(Video by Phillip Sunkel - Hype Music Festivals)

Kimbrough spent the next two decades becoming the go-to sideman in Nashville.  He wrote songs for Jimmy Buffet, Little Feat, and Todd Snider, among others.  He recorded and toured with Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, and Todd Snider, among others.  He produced Doug Seegers’ gold record.  While he was on tour with Emmylou, he shared the stage with Pete Seeger at the Newport Folk Festival, and played the banjo on Seeger’s “Turn, Turn, Turn,” and he saw Robert Plant dancing in the wings with his eyes closed as Kimbrough and Emmylou jammed before thousands in San Francisco.

A couple of years ago, Kimbrough made a commitment to play his own music.  He still plays on other musicians’ records, but, he said, “I want to make a living doing my own stuff.  I had great experiences on tour; I reached the top playing with Emmylou.  But I have done that.  I want to play what I believe.”

TICKETS:  Willie Sugarcapps - Live at the Capri Theatre - Montgomery, AL - Thursday 05.28.15

His decision was likely influenced by a performance in Silverhill, a small town between Fairhope and Robertsdale in Baldwin County.  In late 2012, Kimbrough was asked by Cathe Steele to perform at the Frog Pond Sunday Social at her farm in Silverhill.  Also performing that afternoon were Sugarcane Jane, a husband and wife duo comprised of former Neil Young sideman Anthony Crawford (from Birmingham) and former Nashville recording studio owner Savana Lee Crawford (from Baldwin County), singer-songwriter Grayson Capps (from Fairhope by way of Brewton, New Orleans, and Nashville) and former Black Oak Arkansas guitarist Corky Hughes (from Fairhope).  From the first song they performed together, Kimbrough could tell there was “a spark, a chemistry.”  When they played again at the Frog Pond, the audience got bigger, and Kimbrough “felt there was something going on.”  They were asked to perform at the 30-A Songwriters Festival (if you love music and you haven’t been, you should go), and needed a name.  Restauranteur Johnny Fisher (Fisher’s, Orange Beach) suggested Willie Sugarcapps.  Kimbrough sometimes calls the band Willie C. Sugarcapps to account for Corky Hughes, the only member of the band who does not sing, but who plays a monster guitar.

(Video by Music Fog)

The band released its first album, the self-titled “Willie Sugarcapps,” in September 2013.  The first song on the album, also titled “Willie Sugarcapps,” tells the story of a touring musician who, after having “been gone too long,” is urged to return home to perform and to share what he has learned from seeing the country.  There are nine other songs on the record, including an enthusiastic “Energy,” written by Sugarcane Jane; an evocative “Mud Bottom,” written by Kimbrough about the Dog River; andan excellent “Poison,” penned by Capps.  Kimbrough plays acoustic guitar, electric guitar, banjo, and mandolin on the record.  The record was awarded 2013 Americana Album of the Year by the Independent Music Association, and has done “very well.”

A second Willie Sugarcapps album, recorded in Muscle Shoals, is scheduled for release in August 2015.  According to Kimbrough, a couple of the songs are “heavier, darker” than what’s on the first album, while others are “pure lighthearted fun.”

Meanwhile Kimbrough has released his seventh solo album, ”Sideshow Love,” a nuanced collection of insightful songs with sharp lyrics and melodious guitar and banjo lines.

Willie Sugarcapps brings its distinctive music to Montgomery for the first time on Thursday, May 28, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Capri Theatre. According to Kimbrough, music fans who attend the benefit concert can expect to hear music that “is rooted in the past and embraces the future.”  Tickets are available at the Capri Theatre, 1045 E. Fairview Avenue, 334-262-4858, and online at williesugarcapps.brownpapertickets.com.

PGroove's first full US tour was in 2003. Early on, the band earned a reputation for their vigorous touring and hard work.  They toured the country extensively, gaining a new legion of die-hard fans in New England and the Northeast, and a strong following on the West Coast, along with an ever-growing fan-base in the South.  PGroove has performed many US festivals with performances at All Good Music Festival, Gathering of the Vibes, Wakarusa, Bonnaroo, Jam Cruise, High Sierra, Jazz Fest, Riverbend and their own annual gathering, Amberland.  International appearances included Jam in the Dam and Caribbean Holidaze.
-
The band announced in January of 2013 that they would be taking an indefinite hiatus following their Winter/Spring Tour.  Perry, Suttle, and McDonald have continued touring under the name Ghost Owl ever since, while front man Brock Butler tended to personal matters and performed solo, acoustic gigs at festivals and venues along the East Coast.  More recently, Butler has performed much of the PGroove catalog with a bluegrass project known as "PGrass."

In Case You Missed It: Grateful Dead Drummer Bill Kreutzmann on Conan (VIDEO) May 22, 2015 07:34

Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann made an appearance on Conan on Wednesday night as part of a current tour promoting his recently released memoir, Deal: My Three Decades of Drumming, Dreams and Drugs with The Grateful Dead, which he co-authored with Benjy Eisen.  Kreutzman shared many entertaining stories w/ O'Brien, including memories of playing Woodstock, the early days of The Warlocks, and a night that got rather interesting while playing the old Playboy After Dark show.

Billy's book tour continued yesterday in Portland, and moves down the West Coast next week with stops in Petaluma (5/26), Mill Valley (5/27) and San Francisco (5/31).  He will also appear on SiriusXM’s Jam On station as a part of the station’s “Dead-icated Memorial Day Weekend” programming for an interview and guest DJ set premiering this afternoon, Friday, May 22 at 4 p.m. ET.  Jam On will also feature a special presentation of “Grateful Moments: Some of the Biggest Grateful Dead Bustouts In Jam Band History” hosted by Ari Fink and a Dead-themed Jam Files session with Alex Bleeker & The Freaks (airing at 12 p.m. ET on Monday, May 25).  Look forward to hearing many of your favorite JamOn artists' various Dead covers.

Anyone remotely familiar with the Alabama music scene has likely had the pleasure of seeing Grayson Capps perform with one project or another.  Capps, an American singer/songwriter from Brewton, AL, started his first two bands while studying at Tulane University in the early 90s.  Many of Capps' songs were also featured in the 2004 film A Love Song For Bobby Long, based off of his father's (Ronald Everett Capps) novel Off Magazine Street.  Capps' latest project is an Americana/folk supergroup known as Willie Sugarcapps.  We couldn't be more excited to be a part of bringing Willie Sugarcapps to Montgomery, AL on Thursday, May 28th (Tickets can be purchased by clicking here.  We recently caught up with Grayson to learn a little bit more about his background and his latest work.

Galactic Releases Details And Release Date For New Album May 7, 2015 08:16

One of New Orleans' finest, Galactic, will release their new album, Into The Deep, on Friday, July 17th.  Galactic's Robert Mercurio and Ben Ellman both produced and arranged the new album, due out on Provogue Records in just two months.  Into The Deep will be the band's 10th studio release, and the first since 2012's Carnivale Electricos.

A number of special guests, including Macy Gray, Mavis Staples, JJ Grey, Maggie Koerner, David Shaw (The Revivalists), Ryan Montbleau, Brushy One String, and Charm Taylor linked up with the band for the new album.  “We look for uniqueness and a quality that makes the people we collaborate with distinctively who they are,” Mercurio said of their collaborations on the album.

The band has developed a unique sound as a result of their influences, including: hip hop, electronic, world music, rock, blues and jazz. Many of their songs include performances by other artists of various styles of music, like hip-hop artists Boots Riley (of The Coup), Gift of Gab (of Blackalicious) and Chali 2na (of Jurassic 5).

Over the years, the band's sound has evolved from organic New Orleans funk to a more modern style, incorporating elements of hip hop, electronica, fusion, and jazz. This change has been largely characterized by the increased use of electronic effects on guitar, bass, saxophone, and drums. Drummer Stanton Moore uses phrase samplers to sample a rhythm which he can then play over, producing intricate and layered drum sounds. Ben Ellman, saxophonist and harmonica player, often distorts his instruments to the degree that they sound similar to an electric guitar.

Two months ago, Americana folk rockers Jeff Crosby & The Refugees began a new monthly cover series, debuting a brand new cover tune every month.  The previous two months have featured George Harrison's "Let It Down" and Hole's "Malibu."  It's our pleasure to debut the band's recent studio recording of Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You."

Biography:: Jeff Crosby & The Refugees
Gifted with a gritty and genuine voice that at once feels familiar to fans of rock and country music, Idaho-born songwriter, singer, and guitarist Jeff Crosby has been writing songs, grinding out shows, and sharing his unique perspective of Americana throughout the United States and beyond for the better part of the past 10 years.
-
Alongside him now to form “The Refugees”, brother Andy Crosby (bass) and Will Prescott (drums) and Dave Manion (pedal steel/ guitar) have created a force of honest, provocative rock and roll that is quickly gathering both a fervent fan base and critical acclaim wherever they go.
-
Two songs (Oh Love, Oh Lord and This Old Town) from the first official release featuring The Refugees, 2013’s  Silent Conversations, were featured on the FX hit series Sons of Anarchy, and now in 2014 the band has released their first full-length LP titled All Nighter. An 11-track album released significantly on July 4th, 2014 and recorded in both Los Angeles and Idaho, All Nighter is a powerful and cohesive record that deals with love, loss, and a new perspective of the American Dream.  As renowned publication NoDepression puts it, “The story is there, the musicality is there, the songs are just great.”  All Nighter is available now!
