HD Video Footage: Phish - "Martian Monster" - Atlanta, GA - 07.31.15 August 13, 2015 09:34

Over the last few years, we have made a point to keep an eye on the YouTube channel LazyLightning55a. They love the music scene as much as we do, and thankfully they provide some of the best live concert footage you can find. HD video footage of Phish's "Martian Monster" from Friday night in Atlanta, GA has now surfaced. The "rotation jam" performed during this jam began with Trey and Mike playing while lying on their backs, before Trey would ultimately stand behind Mike while playing his bass. He then moved behind McConnell to play keys, before meeting Mike back behind the drums, while Fishman moved up front to play bass. Mike was then on lead guitar, and the rotation was in full effect.
Coming straight out of the 24-minute "Kill Devil Falls," this was definitely one of our highlights of the summer thus far. Hope you enjoy!

-The Revivalists-

It’s actually surprising that when The Revivalists take the stage, the entire planet doesn't hear them playing--yes, their sound is that big. It’s not just because this band - who have performed everywhere across the country - has seven members and perform with a wide breadth on instruments. It is because there is so much passion spewing out of these guys that it’s completely impossible to ignore them.
After seven years of making music together, New Orleans rock hybrid The Revivalists (David Shaw - vocals, Zack Feinberg - guitar, Andrew Campanelli - drums, Ed Williams - pedal steel guitar, George Gekas - bass, Rob Ingraham - saxophone, and Michael Girardot - keyboards & trumpet) are set to deliver their latest studio album, Men Amongst Mountains. The forthcoming release, out on July 17, is an album about growth. It is appropriate, then, that the band set out to challenge itself while writing and recording their latest batch of music.
The Revivalists cloistered themselves within the intimate confines of Bogalusa, LA’s Studio in the Country for nearly two weeks while recording Men Amongst Mountains, taking advantage of the studio’s generous acoustics by setting up in a single room and recording to tape in an effort to induce a more performance-based sensibility. New Orleans’ Esplanade and Living Room Studios hosted the finishing touches to an album which leans first and foremost on capturing authentic moments in warm, rich tones and with a distinctly raw, old-world feel.
Mirroring the broader themes which connect the individual songs on the album, the recording and instrumentation on Men Amongst Mountains represents the next step in The Revivalists’ ever-evolving depth and maturity. Like the band’s vaunted live shows, Men Amongst Mountains can and will turn on a dime. The gentle gives way to the heavy, the acoustic to the orchestral. Despair becomes hope. Fire becomes light. At times, the obstacles and troubles in our lives can make the world seem impossibly, hopelessly big. Men Amongst Mountains, ultimately, is about the journey that makes us greater than the mountains standing in our way.

-Earphunk-

200 shows, three trips across the United States and appearances at Electric Forest Festival, Bear Creek Music and Art Festival, and Wakarusa Music Festival. It’s been a busy 24 months for Earphunk who have seen their efforts propel them from small club stages to packed clubs and theaters across the country. The New Orleans born-and-bred quintet shows no sign of letting off the gas, and now, with the band’s third studio album release of Sweet Nasty, the band has captured the energy that has won over a rapidly growing fanbase of loyal listeners.
Recorded at the storied Studio in the Country in rural Louisiana while on break between tour stints, Sweet Nasty is Earphunk’s boldest release to date. “When you hear the album it sounds like a live show, and that’s how it should feel,” explains lead guitarist Paul Provosty, who also handled mixing duties for the record. “We wanted it to sound big – a true representation of our live show.” The Studio’s hallowed halls provided the proper backdrop for the band’s uniquely organic balance of heavy-pocket funk and reckless prog-driven guitar explosions, or “prog-funk”, as the band refers to it.
The band’s early rehearsals saw Provosty, Mark Hempe (vocals/guitar), Michael Matthews (drums), Michael Comeaux (Bass), and Christian Galle (keyboards/organ) as college students around New Orleans and Baton Rouge, LA in 2009 — there were no expectations of national tours and sold out dates. But as things quickly progressed, the option to pursue a full-time career as musicians drove the band to hit the road. “After the first few tours, we were fully vested in this together,” Hempe muses, “and when people are coming to the shows, and appreciating what we’re doing, it gives us the drive to want to step up our game, to be as tight as we can be.”
Years later, the unit’s tireless touring ethic continues to fortify their commitment. “It’s tough leaving New Orleans; this is our home. We don’t get much time back here now, but luckily as we’ve toured, fans have spread,” explains Provosty. “To do this right, you have to keep visiting every market every three or four months, and we’re committed to that. When the shows are selling out, we know our music is resonating. It’s just a matter of continuing to give this thing the room it needs to grow.”
Part of finding the room to grow is recognizing when to reach out to a few helping hands. Saxophonist and close friend Khris Royal (Rebelution, Dark Matter) had contributed his services to past Earphunk records, but for Sweet Nasty, the band was looking to create a larger section. “Everyone in New Orleans, they play with each other. Everyone sits in with one another. It’s a natural thing and that’s the vibe we wanted on the record,” says Provosty.
There are worse places to be than New Orleans when in need of a horn player, and the band had to look no further than Eric “Benny” Bloom (Lettuce, Pretty Lights). “We had been out on the road with Lettuce for a few dates in the Southeast and got to know the guys pretty well,” recalls Galle. “When Eric moved to New Orleans, it was a no brainer. We needed him on the record with Khris.” Bloom and Royal unite with the five-piece in stellar fashion, bringing a proper funk authenticity to high-energy tracks like the Zapp and Roger inspired “Phine” and foot stomping title track “Sweet Nasty.” As George Clinton once mused about the band – “Y’all ain’t your average white band!”
Although the album was recorded, the work was not yet complete. In an age where digital releases and distribution models leave artists with more questions than answers, the band sought for an alternative. The solution was found in a partnership with the emerging publisher platform BitTorrent Bundle. BitTorrent Inc, the company behind the revolutionary peer-to-peer protocol with over 170 million monthly users, describes Bundle as “a revolutionary file format that’s designed to restore digital media to its experiential core.” That’s precisely the type of treatment Earphunk was looking for with the release of Sweet Nasty, which will debut exclusively on BitTorrent Bundle on August 18th. The Sweet Nasty Bundle will be loaded up with exclusive videos, live sets, and artwork to accompany the new album to enrich the fans’ experience.
Sweet Nasty showcases an emerging band with something to prove; yet who are prepared, willing, and ready to define themselves as a premiere national act. And with it’s release locked and loaded, the next step is a familiar one for Earphunk. As the band loads the trailer for their next national trek to support the album’s release, dates and festivals are already being booked for 2015. There are no plans to deviate from this strategy; after all, it’s worked out thus far. “Our fans have done so much for us already on this journey,” explains Hempe. “We just feel beyond fortunate to have this audience and we’re just going to continue working how we’ve been working, so they can feel proud to support us.”

-McLovins-
McLovins specialize in the creation of dynamic and improvised sound, influenced by the members' disparate and eclectic musical influences. The band currently includes Jason Ott, Jake Huffman, Justin Berger and Atticus Kelly.
These young artists from Connecticut, embrace simultaneous and intricate improvisation with a more versatile front line in which all members are singing in four-part harmony, writing lyrics & music, as well as expounding on one another's musical ideas. Set list segues and fiery improvisations are a staple of the band's performances, keeping their audience always guessing what's coming next and wanting more!
In the short time the McLovins have been performing together, they have been invited to appear at an impressive number of well-established, as well as many new music festivals, and some of the most well respected venues in the North East. These guys are constantly writing & playing music, to continue to build on their own foundation, towards a long career of Original Rock Music to their growing fan base, of all ages.

-Maradeen-

Maradeen is an American rock band based out of Nashville, Tennessee. Founded by guitarist, Whit Murray, in the summer of 2014 with keyboardist, Kaitlyn Connor, and bassist, Sterling Miller, the band formed their initial roots as a high energy rock n roll quartet. With classical and jazz improvisation backgrounds they forged and evolved a unique and well-versed sound. In 2015 Tom Galloway moved to Nashville for songwriting and began collaborations with Murray. The band entered the analog studio "Welcome to 1979" in the spring of 2015 and recorded their first full-length LP entitled, "Mirage". The album features the initial hard-hitting rockers from the band's formative stage while revealing the new songwriting dynamic between Murray and Galloway.
Although the band was new to the scene at this time, the origins of Maradeen run deep. Murray played lead guitar for Galloway's band, Mama's Love, between the years of 2009-12. During this time they toured nationwide, developed a devoted fanbase, and recorded with renowned producers Tom Tapley and John Keane. Galloway continued fronting Mama's Love while Murray extended his education at The Berklee College of Music. Mama's Love had shared the stage with the progressive rock band, Afro, several times in the past which featured Connor on keys. Connor met Miller through the MTSU music program where Miller majored in audio engineering and played with bands Harrison Anvil and The Bourbon Barrel Band. Whit met Russ Garner, who was also a Berklee College graduate, at an open jam in Nashville one evening. Garner played with the Larry Mitchell Band which had also crossed paths with Mama's Love in the past. A long line of history, coincidence, and mutual passion brought together the group, and they continue to make strides as they climb the mountain of music.

-The Motet-

Hailing from Colorado, The Motet is a world-class improvisational funk band that has dedicated more than a decade to the healing powers of funky dance music. Although the early years of the band saw a constantly revolving cast of musicians, the most recent incarnation has been touring the country for the last several years developing a new and unique style with roots in funk, afrobeat, disco, electronic music, and soul. This new Motet has quickly gained a reputation for throwing infectious dance parties everywhere they go, creating a deep rapport between band and audience.
All bands have their influences, and the Motet is no different. The band has a long-standing tradition of putting on a musical costume each Halloween, playing consistently sold-out shows along the front range of Colorado while performing the music of groups like Earth Wind and Fire, Parliament Funkadelic, Tower of Power, and Jamiroquai. The careful study of these bands has had an undeniable effect on the creative direction of the Motet. As bandleader and drummer Dave Watts told the Boulder Weekly, "We realized how effective a great song is on a crowd. Instead of just the energetics we're used to bringing with improvising, soloing, and extended arrangements, we really decided to focus on tunes, because we understand how powerful a great song is."
A great song needs a great band to play it, and the Motet proves to be more than adequate in that regard. In addition to Watts, Joey Porter (keys), Garrett Sayers (bass) and Ryan Jalbert (guitar) form a core rhythm section that has been playing together for nearly a decade. This time together has led to their characteristic deep rhythmic pocket, and has created the musical bonds that allow them to take their collective improvisation to heights bordering on precognition. The Motet horns consist of Matt Pitts (sax) and Gabriel Mervine (trumpet). Although deeply rooted in jazz, their time with the Motet has made them into one of the funkiest horn sections on the scene. Front man Jans Ingber rounds out the lineup with his soulful singing, welcoming stage presence, and "Soul Train" dance moves which inspire concert goers to boogie like no one is watching.
These seven musicians form what is undoubtedly the strongest, most cohesive incarnation of the Motet to date. Whether you've loved the Motet for years or you're just tuning in, listen up. You haven't heard the Motet like this, and you won't be disappointed.
-Locust Fork Band-
The Locust Fork Band formed in 1974 based out of Tuscaloosa, Alabama playing Southern Rock, Rhythm and Blues, and Western Swing music. After 40 years, the band is still playing with original members Bill Marshall and Kent Peterson on guitars, Dwight Williams on bass, Rick Byrd on pedal steel and vocalist, Nida Threet. The popularity of the band is still strong perhaps due as much to the combined talents of this group of musicians as the desire of their fans to recapture their youth in the memories of the songs. The level of entertainment is always superb and greatly appreciated by the loyal fans of these veterans of honky-tonkin’ blues.
-
-New Madrid-

From the southern wilds of Athens, GA comes young four-piece, New Madrid. Their music is a dynamic mixture of underwater-psych-rock that engages the listener in fully textured aural landscapes, both on record and live. Their acclaimed 2012 independent debut, Yardboat - engineered by David Barbe (Deerhunter, Drive-By Truckers) at Chase Park Transduction- displayed the band's inherent talents and introduces a distinctive sound budding with sonic energy. In their ever-thriving music- mecca hometown, Yardboat garnered "Album of the Year," and the band's formula of constant touring and creative restlessness earned them "Artist of the Year" at the Flagpole Music Awards. In the summer of 2013, New Madrid signed to local start-up Normaltown Records, and entered the studio to record what would become Sunswimmer. Their second full-length finds New Madrid further exploring depths of psychedelia and textured noise.
The new record presents a New Madrid audibly settled into itself. Focused into a collection of collaborative songs, the band delves into a more experimental soundscape. Recorded solely on analog tape during a cool, wet July – once again under the direction of David Barbe - Sunswimmertelegraphs a newly confident self-knowledge, from the assertive opening riff of the churning “Manners” to the infectious driving beat behind “Forest Gum.” The tracks here are more concentrated than Yardboat’s offerings, but fans of New Madrid’s expansive tendencies will be sated by the record’s final 25 minutes, which are characterized by two linear compositions (“Homesick” and “And She Smiles”).
The album's body of music was conceived as a singular piece and is best consumed that way. In a digital age, when song snippets skip cross-country on the backs of broadband, Sunswimmer is a testament that making music for shared space still remains. With their sophomore album, New Madrid continues to redefine.
-The Gate Band-

The Gate Band, formed in Montgomery in the mid 60's, has been a staple in the Alabama music scene ever since. They were influenced early on by singing cowboys, Hank Williams, Everly Brothers, The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, and the British Invasion. A heavy influence of Texas music was acquired once introduced to Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Doug Sahm, and Delbert McClinton. During the summer of 1974 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, The Gate Band began playing 4 to 5 nights a week for several years. The band quit touring in the early 1980s on a regular basis, but has continued to play several special events throughout the year ever since.

Chasing Phish Through The Southeast: Tuscaloosa: Night 3 August 11, 2015 18:09

After a scorching two night run at Aaron's Amphiteatre Lakewood in Atlanta, Phish's third stop on the deep south leg of their summer tour found them returning to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for the first time since November 8, 1991 and only the fourth time overall. Playing the four-year-old Tuscaloosa Amphitheater, this just under 7,500 capacity venue provided an intimate outdoor setting for a Sunday night show. Nestled along the beautiful backdrop of the Black Warrior River and featuring clear sight lines, a spacious pit, and excellent acoustics throughout, this venue was sure to be a hit from the start.
"Sample in a Jar" began the proceedings, serving as a show opener for the second time this tour. Though not the most lively of openers, the crowd responded well and things were off. The energy picked up afterwards as Trey and the boys whipped things into a frenzy via a rendition of "Chalkdust Torture" that while perhaps lacking in time, it certainly wasn’t in strength. Next up was "Train Song," a beautiful and fairly uncommon Mike ballad that was most certainly a nod to the tracks crossing the river just behind us. "Devotion to a Dream" continued with the laid back feel before an extra funky "Meat" featuring a false ending made sure everyone was up and moving. A scorching "Maze" continued to build the excitement and anticipation before things once again slowed back down with "The Line," which thankfully found itself back in the first set. "Roggae" continued the mellow mood, and included an absolutely wonderful solo from Trey that evoked memories of Phish from years past. "My Friend, My Friend" followed with a somewhat slower than normal buildup and for the very first time in the song’s history featured quotes from "The Very Long Fuse." A blistering "46 Days" had everyone thinking it was the set closer before the band switched gears by seguing into the always crowd pleasing "Cavern" to end the first set on a high note.

As is normally the case, the real guts of this show are found in the second set. "Down With Disease" begins things, quickly venturing into Type II territory after the structured beginning. Stretching just shy of 20-minutes, this version features a beautiful Piper-esque jam sandwiched between often dark and brooding interplay before Trey quickly changed gears into "Camel Walk," only the second time these songs have been segued in the band's history. This old school funk number created smiles abound before a great cool down of "Seven Below." While this jam didn't venture into the unkown territory some previous versions have, it set things up perfectly for the end of the night while providing concert goers a brief moment to catch themselves before the first keys of "Fuego" were struck. Though it has stayed mostly in the composed realm, some very well placed confetti by those riding the rail added excitement and energy that carried over into "2001."
Stretching a bit longer than many 3.0 versions, Page and Trey's interplay was very much on point and each note took the crowd higher and higher, serving as an excellent springboard for the show’s culmination of "Harry Hood > Possum." Though a bit shorter and more structured than many recent versions, Hood once again was a genuine crowd pleaser and set the stage for the roof to be blown off with a blistering "Possum" closer. The show was perfectly wrapped up with an encore of The Beatles' "A Day in the Life," perfectly encapsulating the show’s overall feel in a single song, leaving us all drifting into a dream as we headed to the exits.
Stay tuned for our recap of Nashville: Night 4 tomorrow!

Chasing Phish Through The Southeast: Atlanta: Night 2 August 10, 2015 15:31

After what seemed like a nearly impossible night to top, Saturday, August 1st was officially upon us, and it was time to see how Trey, Mike, Page, and Fish would follow up Friday night’s monster performance. Having the luxury of a multi-night Phish run with at least two-nights being in the same city always makes the experience that much better. Sleep in (hopefully), find a good spot for brunch (Atlanta’s options are endless), and make your way to the lot. It was another scorching hot summer afternoon, but the heat and humidity would in no way affect the buzz in the air at Lakewood. Many were discussing the fact that it was Jerry Garcia’s 73rd birthday, as we were last year in Orange Beach, AL. I, for one, do not expect to hear a single Dead tune this summer, but I’ll be as elated as anyone in the event that it occurs. Trey, of course, found a much more creative way to pay homage to Jerry on this night.
Recap: Chasing Phish Through The Southeast: Atlanta: Night 1
The first set started in classic fashion with “Runaway Jim,” an opener which I seem to catch about once every four shows, but Jim is such a perfect way to start a show. Trey gives the latter end of the jam such a pyrotechnic feel, just before its time for “By the time he came home he was seventeen!” This one was that much more fun as my friend Andy Greenberg, front man of Phish tribute band Runaway Gin, joined us in the pit just before show time. It wasn’t long before “Undermind” made its second appearance of the summer. The entire Undermind album is one that I’ve always felt that a lot of Phish fans sleep on, but we are reminded just how fun it is to sing along with every time it is played. As “Undermind” came to an end, Mr. Greenberg looked at me and asked “How ‘bout some Nellie Kane?” and I’ll be damned if he wasn’t spot on. The “bluegrass” tunes which Mike tends to take lead vocals on make for a nice change of pace and showcase the vast range of this band. “Blaze On” seems to the anthem of the 2015 Summer Tour, and I couldn’t be happier about that. Not quite as repetitive as “Fuego” in 2014, but this made for its fourth appearance in just seven shows. Atlanta’s “Blaze On” was shorter than those of Bend, Shoreline, and Austin, but they have made it perfectly clear that this song will be a major jam vehicle.

Every set tends to have a “breather” moment, and “Halfway To The Moon” typically provides just that, right in the middle of a set. A beautiful, Page-led tune always makes for a nice transition. Once “Ocelot” came out to play, we saw yet another moment which directly reflects the amount of time Trey has put in this year. He is consistently finding a way to take these songs to new heights every night. The solo went way further than I can remember in the past, and I have found myself re-listening to Saturday’s “Ocelot” as much as any song. “Heavy Things” carried the fun, sing-a-long vibe, and I truly believe even those who are exhausted with this song find themselves singing ending melody every time. There was a clear “Happy Birthday” tease during this one, which many felt as a nod to Jerry.
The combo of songs chosen to close the first set was as powerful as any in my opinion. “Theme From The Bottom” is one of my all-time favorites, and the gradual buildup of this ballad was as clean as any I have heard. The chorus of Theme makes for one of the most uplifiting, euphoric moments I’ve found from any band. “Run Like An Antelope” was then delivered in such powerful fashion; one of those songs that just seems like it has to close a set. I think we can all agree that we’ve earned a breather/bathroom break/cold beer after an Antelope.
A two-night stand in Atlanta would not have been complete without a “Tweezer,” and could there be a more dynamic way to start a set? This was one of those monster versions that we have come to expect, clocking in at 26-minutes, containing so much space, communication, and creativity. Trey definitely leads the pack here, but Mike also provided numerous notable moments in the midst of the darker jam about half-way through. The ultimate landing into “Waiting All Night” was seamless, and while I’ve been critical of this song in the past, it was perfectly placed for this set. Speaking of which, let’s go ahead and move on to “Backwards Down The Number Line,” another “newer” 3.0 tune which draws a whole lot of mixed feelings. Always developing into a beautiful, nostalgic jam, this one was really special. The closing jam was so polished and went to new heights. Perhaps the “birthday” element was another nod to the “birthday boy.” Regardless, this was another song from the weekend that I will forever associate with Atlanta 2015.
Deep into the second set, it was time to blow the roof off, and what better way than the opening notes of “Carini.” The expectations on this one are always sky high, and while this wasn’t a record breaker, it was nasty, dark, and without a doubt satisfying. The jamming was kept tight and concise, and similar to “Tweezer,” the landing into “Waste” was perfect. One of Phish’s most notable ballads, and much more rare these days, “Waste” was a soothing landing spot out of “Carini.” There were no stops in this set, and the summer’s second “Sand” served as yet another perfect call. Being the opening song of the Summer Tour in Bend, we were all due for a late night “Sand,” a chance to groove on it well after the sun had set, allowing Chris Kuroda (lighting designer) to work his magic. They ran with this one a little longer than any other second set tune, with the exception of “Tweezer.” This was ultimately a build up for “Tweezer Reprise” to close the second set, which has been the pattern on this tour thus far. You can’t help but wonder what they are working up, but at some point this summer, there will be a Reprise like no other to end an encore. Throwing in Velvet Underground's "Rock And Roll" for the encore was quite a treat, and yet another curve ball as this particular tune is a very rare encore, and Phish is playing very few covers.
When looking back and assessing any multi-night run, it is always an interesting, tough call. Each set always ends up having a handful of songs that I go in hoping for, and there is usually at least one moment that throws me off guard. Friday night's second set in Atlanta was definitely an exception, and without question one of the best sets I have seen from Phish. Saturday night saw several unforgettable moments, most notably with “Theme>Antelope” to close the first set, only to be followed by a 26-minute “Tweezer” to kick off the second half. The strategic song selection that we are seeing every single night this summer speaks volumes about the state of Phish. It’s difficult to think that during any era, every set was flowing this well, while continuously surprising those at the show, as well as the thousands watching/listening at home. The quality of every show this tour has been nothing short of remarkable, and it’s truly inspiring to see this band enjoying it even more than we are.

Just when we thought that the month of July couldn't get any better, last weekend brought about our favorite annual summer tradition: Phish in the Southeast. For the dedicated following this band has built over 30 years, the 2015 Summer Tour has justifiably created as much hype and anticipation as any previous tour. After finishing 2014 with a legendary three-night Halloween run in Vegas, and another amazing four-night New Years' run in Miami, we had all been counting the days until the boys hit the road again. Trey Anastasio's role and performance in the "Fare Thee Well" Dead 50th anniversary shows only fueled the fire that much more, giving us all reason to believe that this tour would be one for the books.
Just as the lawn began to fill, and the sun began to set, the Southeastern run was underway with the weekend's first bust-out, "Prince Caspian." Rarely even placed in the first set, much less as the first song, “Caspian” provided for a smooth intro to the night and appropriately foreshadowed an evening full of surprises. "No Men in No Man's Land" made for an instant dance party, a new tune that seems to have already been universally embraced, as this was its third appearance in just seven shows. The energy and vibe of this night would only build from this point. A 13-minute "Ghost" would follow with "The Wedge" and "The Moma Dance" not far behind, keeping up the energetic start to the set. Mike Gordon's "How Many People Are You" made its second summer appearance just before "Rift," which can almost always be expected early in the night. It was at this point that Trey addressed the crowd and said something along the lines of, "Now we're gonna pick up the tempo!"

After the "Mike's > Wedge > Fuego > Shade > No Men's > Weekapaug" in Bend, it was to be expected that the classic "Mike's > Hydrogen > Weekapaug" was coming at some point this weekend. The opening notes to "Mike's Song" took an interesting turn as (Jon) Fishman led some major "false starts" with the tempo (Was that the intro drum roll to "My Sweet One?"). A slowed-down, reggae-ish groove would ensue before the band erupted into the standard flow of "Mike's Song." The always peaceful, breath-of-fresh-air "I Am Hydrogen" gave us all a moment to collect our thoughts before "Weekapaug Groove" sent the entire venue into a frenzy and wrapped up a stellar first set, full of hits from every era of this band.
If you follow Phish in any capacity, it would have been hard to have missed the enthusiasm surrounding Friday night's second set. "Kill Devil Falls" went places we never imagined, and it's difficult to think that this particular tune will not be forever tied to 07.31.15. As the song progressed from the normal rhythm of KDF, Trey seemed to utilize an effect we hadn't yet heard, while Page moved from the piano to the organ. Carrying on for nearly 24-minutes, a sufficient dose of "type-2 jamming" ensued, developing into one of the summer's biggest moments thus far. Just when we thought we had a moment to rest our dancing legs, (Page) McConnell triggered the narration/intro of "Martian Monster," the final song of the band's 2014 Vegas Halloween 2nd set. I'm not sure there could have been a better call at this moment, and I'm convinced that the echo of the crowd reaction was likely heard 20-miles north in Alpharetta. The "rotation jam" performed at this point began with Trey and Mike playing behind their backs, before Trey would ultimately stand behind Mike while playing his bass. He then moved behind McConnell to play keys, before meeting Mike back behind the drums, while Fishman moved up front to play bass. Mike was now on lead guitar, and the rotation was in full effect.
After returning to their normal positions, the subsequent segue into "Twist" was executed perfectly. "Twist" has always felt like the perfect party tune, as Trey's main riff almost seems to wind you up, all the way until it's time to scream "Woo!' After a solid 10-minute jam on "Twist," the familiar sound of "Back on the Train" was born. I guess you would call this the "breather" of the second set, which feels like an absolutely ridiculous thing to say. One of the finer executions of "Reba" would follow where we would witness Trey absolutely go off on this famously beautiful solo. My biggest concern at this point was whether or not the classic "Reba" whistle jam would occur, and it seemed as if it would not. The first and only pause of the set came before firing into "Bathtub Gin," which was placed as the second set closer for the first time in Phish history. This was also the first Gin to follow a Reba in 25 years (+1 to Phish.net). To make things even sweeter, the Reba whistles surfaced after the first verse of Gin. The whistles continued throughout Gin, which carried on for nearly 15-minutes, without one band member skipping a beat. The closing jam of Gin that we all know so well was as crisp and clean as any I have ever heard.

Throwing "Farmhouse" into the encore was undoubtedly an interesting call. While it's not ever going to be my personal favorite, if there is a time and place for it, that may be towards the end of a show of this magnitude. There was absolutely no doubt that something huge would follow to finally put this party to bed. "Character Zero" was the right call and seems to become more and more explosive the later in the set it is played. The final roars of this song made for the perfect ending to what many are calling the show of the summer.
The level of expectation approaching this show was unrealistically high, and of course, this band found a way to exceed those expectations. From the “Caspian” opener to the first ever second set “Gin” closer, this show was living proof of how creative this band continues to be. Knowing that there were two (possibly three) more shows ahead, gave us all a level of satisfaction like no other. The level of effort and strategy that they continue to give with each passing show, even with the most minor details, is what keeps me chasing them as often as possible.
Stay tuned for our recap of Night 2: Atlanta, Night 3: Tuscaloosa, and Night 4: Nashville in the coming days!

Phish Kick Off 2015 Summer Tour, "Blaze On" To Night Two July 22, 2015 11:43
Phish kicked off their 2015 Summer Tour to a sold out Les Schwab Amphitheater in Bend, Oregon last night, hitting on a steady variety of each generation of the band's now 30+ year catalog, while debuting three brand new songs. Nearly 8,000 fans from across the country gathered at the outdoor, riverfront amphitheater in Bend's historic Old Mill district. Modern technology prevailed yet again as LivePhish.com has offered HD webcasts of both nights in Bend for those of us wanting to watch at home.
The band took the stage at 6:24PM PST and opened up the nearly 80-minute set with "Sample In A Jar," which always proves to be a safe and effective way to get the crowd moving. The unusually compact stage, which was dawned with an elaborate image of a multi-colored owl, provided a slightly different feel. A rather rare first set "Sand" came next and certainly had its moments, clocking in at just less than 10 minutes. Next came "555," "Rift," and "Halfway To The Moon," which seemed appropriate in the broad daylight, well before Chris Kuroda's lighting mastery would be utilized. Trey Anastasio took us back to the Rift album with "Horn," a tune that tells a sad love confession, but provides a classic and quintessential Trey led crescendo. "Devotion To A Dream," one of my favorites from Fuego, would follow and click in at just under 9-minutes.
The night's first debut came in "Blaze On," which felt like something from Little Feat or The Band from the get-go. The brand new song's title and chorus were clearly products of Anastasio and long-time Phish lyricist Tom Marshall, and the composition seems to leave plenty of room for the band to explore. "Tube" was next, much to the crowd's delight, but was cut much shorter than we all hoped for at just 4 minutes. A funky, 10-minute "Wolfman's Brother" brought the set to a close with a nice sing-a-long for the 7,700+ fans in attendance.
After a nearly one-hour set break, the band took the stage with plenty of sunlight still shining. "Ghost" set the tone immediately, providing early indication of what we like to call a "heater." The 13-minute jam featured some classic interaction between Anastasio and Page McConnell, who really took it to the next level before moving into "Birds Of A Feather." We got a tiny taste of the band's 2014 Halloween antics when we heard the "They attack!" sample once at both the beginning and end of the song. "Mike's Song" came next providing the powerful but dark jamming that we have come to expect while simultaneously and appropriately aligning with the setting sun. I had my fingers crossed for a "Mikes>Wedge," and that's exactly what happened. "The Wedge," another track off the 1994 release, Rift, always makes for a fun sing-long, and occasionally some next-level improvisation. Unfortunately, Tuesday night was not one of those nights, but I'll take a Wedge in any form any night.
The first "Fuego" of Summer Tour would follow and provide for more red-hot but concise jamming, which seemed to be the theme of the night. Two more brand new originals, "Shade" and "No Men In No Man's Land" would follow last summer's 'anthem'. I can't say much for "Shade" just yet, but many original debuts don't always blow you away the first time. The highlight of the show came with the third and final debut of the night, “No Men in No Man's Land.” This Page and Trey led funk number immediately set the tone for the rest of the set. Incorporating his Mu-Tron pedal from GD50, Trey played several notes that were reminiscent of a Spring 77 “Dancin'”, and while this jam didn't go quite as far as we would've liked, it segued somewhat smoothly into a rocking “Weekapaug” that continued the groove. Sure to be a major jam vehicle moving forward, we can't wait to see where this new tune goes. With a great rhythm and wildly catchy lyrics, I can already see this one as one of the jams of 2015 Summer Tour. Anytime a new original is debuted and surpasses the 10-minute mark, you have got to feel good about its potential.
Chris Kuroda finally saw the sunlight move out of the way for the latter half of set two, and we saw the lights take full effect during "Weekapaug Groove." You knew it was coming at some point with "Mikes Song," and on Tuesday night a total of 4 songs were sandwiched in between. Anastasio and McConnell both shined during opportunities for extensive solos. Jon Fishman carefully slowed the pace for a beautiful transition into Stevie Wonder's "Boogie On Reggae Woman," the first and only cover of the night. "Chalkdust Torture" closed out the set in raging fashion, while continuing the theme of red hot but concise jamming. "Theme From The Bottom" made its first encore appearance since September 9th, 1999 (Portland Meadows - Portland, OR), clocking in at 9-minutes and capping off what evolved into a particularly strong tour opening show.
The first set started off feeling fairly "run-of-the-mill," with songs like "Sample In A Jar," "Sand," and "Wolfman's Brother" all having their moments. "Ghost" truly set the tone for set two and aside from "Shade," the dance party really never let up. There is a notably different feel after the sun sets with the lights taking full effect, which naturally did not occur until midway through the second set. The energy that keeps us all coming back was clearly flowing and could easily be felt, even for those of us on "couch tour." Marshall's latest lyrical work will be what I remember the most when thinking back on this show. One particular part of "No Men In No Man's Land" really sticks out and that's what I will leave you with as we shift our focus towards night two of Summer Tour in Bend, OR.
"And the truth will rise above, and fiction falls beneath. Though the lies may bite, the truth has all of the teeth. You see us as a window, all happy that we're here. Exposed to all the elements, while inside all is clear. But if you hold a mirror, and you turn it to one side. The depth you see within at first will find a place to hide" - "No Man In No Man’s Land" - Marshall/Anasatasio

Live & Listen and Matter Present: Willie & The Giant w/ Special Guests The Harkestra July 10, 2015 10:45

We are pleased to announce that we have partnered with our friends at Matter Creative Studio to bring you one of our favorite up-and-coming bands, Willie and the Giant, on Sunday, August 16th at the A&P Courtyard in Montgomery, AL. Fresh off of an early Summer run which included supporting groups such as North Mississippi Osborne, The Revivalists, and Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, the Nashville-based four piece offers up plenty of eclectic magic— sweltering swamp grooves, dark and lonesome spaghetti-Western tunes offset by feel-good soul-pop ditties, gorgeous dueling guitar melodies, fist-pumping no-frills American rock & roll, glammy ‘70s raveups, fiery Southern anthems and stadium-ready psychedelic blues epics. Supporting Willie and the Giant is Montgomery's own The Harkestra, led by local guitarist William Barnes.

Fare Thee Well: The Grateful Dead's Final Stand at Soldier Field July 9, 2015 09:40

Photo by Phierce Photo of FX Media Solutions
When I awoke and drove in to work on Friday, January 16th, I was already excited and knew that I was in for a long day. Several of us were heading to the Charleston Pour House for four rotating sets of Phish and Widespread Panic, courtesy of tribute bands Runaway Gin and Machine Funk. Sometime around noon, my phone started to light up with calls and text messages asking if I had heard the news. The rumors were officially true: The Grateful Dead were playing a three-night run at Soldier Field over the weekend of July 4th. To make things even sweeter, Trey Anastasio, Bruce Hornsby, and Jeff Chimenti were all set to round out the lineup. Any chance at the slightest bit of productivity that afternoon was officially shot, and a hotel reservation in Chicago was made immediately.
In order to honor their creative tradition, the initial ticket offer was made via mail order, in order to ensure that the band's total ticket allotment would be available only to those willing to make the extra effort. Elaborate, Dead-themed artwork was encouraged on each envelope. Over 500,000 ticket requests were received, leaving just a ten percent chance of "winning the lottery." The overwhelming response led promoters to adjust the seating arrangement to accommodate more guests. Peter Shapiro, the event's organizer and head promoter, gave his word that the level of production would provide all mail order ticket holders with an amazing experience.
On April 10th, more rumors were confirmed when the band announced that their final run would now consist of two additional shows at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, CA on June 27th and 28th. It only seemed right that the band make a return to the Bay Area, where it all officially started 50 years prior. Much debate surrounded the band's selection of Anastasio on lead guitar, as past Dead lineups have included many other amazing guitarists such as Warren Haynes, Steve Kimock, Jimmy Herring, and John Kadlecick in that role.

Charleston Pour House Raises Over $30,000 for Mother Emanuel Hope Fund June 26, 2015 07:35
Photo by Big Fish Eat The Little Ones
On Tuesday, June 23, 2015, The Charleston Pour House and members of the Charleston music community hosted a gathering to heal with the power of music. “Don’t Tell Me This Town Ain’t Got No Heart” was a benefit concert to raise money to help cover the funeral costs of those killed in the June 17th tragedy at the Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston, SC. The name of the event is a reference to a line in the well-known tune “Shakedown Street” by Grateful Dead. The purpose of the event was to provide a place for the Charleston community to gather, restore faith and raise money for the shooting victims’ funerals, their families and the church through the Mother Emanuel Hope Fund, established by Charleston’s Mayor Joe Riley.

Photo by Big Fish Eat The Little Ones
Over $30,000 was raised through ticket and alcohol sales, cash donations, and the live auction, which included over 200 donated items, including a rare, signed Widespread Panic poster that went for $4,000. With 80 all-star Charleston musicians and 20+ businesses gathered together, the event turned into a mini day festival, which sold out in 3 hours to 800 people. After the event sold out so quickly, The Charleston Pour House found a way to stream the event live, for free, to the general public. 1800 people tuned in around the world to the live stream. Widespread Panic used the live stream as their house music between sets at their show in Jones Beach, NY. All Pour House staff worked for free; many musicians cancelled paying gigs to participate in the event. Area businesses quickly joined together to sponsor the event, including Lee Distributors, Terrapin Beer Company, Lagunitas, Southern Eagle, Snyders Event Rentals, Holy City Brewing, Sweetwater Brewing, Charleston Distillery, Get Rigged Lighting, Miller, Coors, Home Team BBQ, The Windjammer, Diageo, PBR, Brooklyn Beer and Constellations.

Photos by Big Fish Eat The Little Ones
The vibe on and off the stage was heart-felt and electric. The lineup included bands Dangermuffin, Sol Driven Train, Gaslight Street, Josh Roberts & The Hinges, Dead 27s, Manny Praise Team, The Reckoning/ Rodeo Clown, Travelin’ Kine, The Lowhills, Guilt Ridden Troubadour, HoneySmoke, and many more on two stages, often calling up members of other bands to sit in in the spirit of camaraderie. The music was uplifting, including songs “Shine a Light” by Rolling Stones, “Live Forever” by Billy Joe Shaver, and even a song written for the victims by Dead 27s. The mission of the shooter was to divide Charleston and create a race war, but exactly the opposite happened at The Charleston Pour House. Instead, the community united to create a music fellowship. Charleston music heals.

The Charleston Pour House is Charleston, SC’s premier music venue located at 1977 Maybank Highway on James Island. The venue hosts more than 300 concerts per year on the main stage, as well as daily, free performances on the outside covered deck. Every Sunday from May through July, the Sunday Brunch Farmers Market is held at The Charleston Pour House with kids’ activities, food trucks and local produce and crafts stands.
The Pour House and the adjacent restaurant, The Lot, recycle all glass, plastic, paper and metal. All food waste is composted by Charleston County. The two venues divert over 5 tons of recyclables and compost a week!

Bear Creek Music & Arts Festival Has Been Cancelled June 24, 2015 10:32

We are saddened to report that organizers of Bear Creek Music & Arts Festival, held annually in October at Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park, have announced that the 2015 festival has been cancelled. The festival dates were recently moved to the first weekend of October, as an attempt to provide for more tolerable weather for the camping/festival experience. At this point, there has been no official word on whether the festival will continue in 2016 or not. Read the official statement from Bear Creek organizers below.
Dear Bear Creek family,
It is with heavy hearts we must announce that Bear Creek Music & Art Festival 2015 has been canceled. Bear Creek was one of the top boutique festivals in the US, and a primary reason it has been so special is because of YOU, our dedicated fans. We spent eight amazing years together filled with beautiful music, dancing, laughter and celebration, and those memories will always live on. In hopes of producing the best possible event for everyone involved, we switched our dates and tried to diversify our lineup to keep things fresh. Unfortunately, things just were not working out in our favor this year and we were not willing to let the show go on unless everything was absolutely perfect. All ticket purchasers will be refunded from point of purchase.
Much love,
The entire Bear Creek staff
