Keller Williams Announces Fall Tour Dates July 12, 2017 09:14

Genre hopping multi-instrumentalist Keller Williams will return to the road this fall with a solo tour, featuring his signature live looping performances. Williams will also play a select number of dates with his Grateful Dead-inspired bluegrass group, Grateful Grass over Halloween weekend. See tour dates below.
-
With a career spanning more than two decades, and just as many releases, Keller Williams has built a reputation for his dynamic and unpredictable live shows. Performing both original songs and select covers, Williams creates samples on the fly using a special looping effect live on stage. Nothing is pre-recorded and no two shows are alike, making for a completely unique experience of sonically infused alt-folk and groovy electronica. To get a sense of the magic in Williams’ improvisational style, check out his recent OurVinyl session HERE
-
Williams will also be taking his celebrated Grateful Grass project on the road for a select number of shows. Grateful Grass performs loose interpretations of Grateful Dead songs in a psychedelic bluegrass style, and features a rotating lineup that has included members of String Cheese Incident, The Infamous Stringdusters, Yonder Mountain String Band and Leftover Salmon. Keller Williams’ Grateful Grass will make stops in New Orleans, Houston and Austin over Halloween weekend, with Wood & Wire joining as support for the last two shows.
-
Earlier this year Keller Williams released Sync, the debut from his latest project KWahtro. Led by Williams on guitar and vocals, KWahtro makes Acoustic Dance Music by infusing reggae, folk, jazz, afrobeat and dance rhythms into new, and innovative arrangements with help from bassist Danton Boller (Jazz Mandolin Project, Roy Hargrove), guitarist and longtime Williams’ collaborator Gibb Droll (Brandi Carlisle, Bruce Hornsby) and drummer Rodney Holmes (Carlos Santana, Steve Kimock). And as if one new album wasn't enough, Williams also released Raw, a 10-song collection of solo acoustic material that simply showcases the artist and his instrument. These straightforward performances are not enhanced by any of his looping, and Acoustic Guitarsaid "Raw may just be the perfect Keller Williams album." Hailing from Boston and as graduates of Berklee School of Music, The Jauntee have solidified a dedicated following through playing staple venues across the country and several national festivals including Catskill Chill, Disc Jam, Peach Fest and more. The band is perhaps more widely recognized for their relentless and extensive touring schedule which has resulted in sold out shows on the East Coast, across the Midwest, and as far West as Colorado. A focus on live improvisation, setlist variety, and musical exploration means every show is different from the last, truly making The Jauntee a live act to see again and again.
-
Drawing influence from a wide variety of acts, The Jauntee's improvisational landscape spans multiple genres, from rock and jazz all the way to bluegrass, psychedelic, and ambient. Their willingness to explore genres, abandon all song structure, and dive into 'the weird' sets them apart from the average upcoming jam band. They aim to push the boundaries of improvisation, embrace the moment and engage the audience. With a quickly growing loyal fanbase, an ever-expanding song catalog and an inclination for open ended improvisation, The Jauntee promises to deliver a unique experience.

Watch Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band on 'Jam In The Van' July 6, 2017 21:16

Last week, Jam in the Van stopped by Phil Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, CA, to record a session with Lesh and The Terrapin Family Band. Lesh, the founding bassist of the Grateful Dead, was joined by longtime collaborator  Jason Crosby (keys), as well as his son Grahame Lesh (guitar), Ross James (guitar), and drummer Alex Koford. The five-piece performed a total of three songs: “Galilee,” “The Wheel,” and “Uncle John’s Band.” Full video footage of each song can be found below.

Lesh and The Terrapin Family Band have had a busy year thus far, frequently playing Terrapin Crossroads, as well as venues such as Brooklyn Bowl and even Monterey Pop Festival. The band will end the summer by teaming up with Bob Weir to recreate the Dead’s Terrapin Station at this year’s LOCKN' Festival.

Celebrating 30 Years Of The Grateful Dead's 'In The Dark' July 6, 2017 10:07

-
On this day in 1987, the Grateful Dead released its 12th studio album, In The Dark. This was the band's first album in six years, and its first studio album since 1980's Go To Heaven. It became unexpectedly popular, achieving double platinum certification in the U.S. It reached #6 on the Billboard 200 chart, the Grateful Dead's only top ten album. The peppy "Touch of Grey" peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100, the band's only top forty single; it also became a frequently played music video on MTV. This would be the second to last studio album to feature legendary keyboardist Brent Mydland.
-
Most of the songs had been played by the Dead since 1982 or 1983, which gave them a five-year edge on perfecting them for the album. After the critically panned Go to Heaven, which contained songs that were mostly under a year old, the maturity of In the Dark was significantly more appreciated. Since the band had been playing the songs for some time, they decided to record the baseline tracks for the album in a darkened empty theater ("In The Dark"), on a stage with the same lighting as they would use on tour. The idea was to capture the "feel" they had for the songs as if they were playing them to a live audience. This was done at Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium in San Rafael, California
-
The cover art for the album was designed by Randy Tuten. The lettering forms the shape of an eye. Inside the lettering are photos of the band members' eyes. On the original LP, the photos were right side up, but when the album was released on CD in 1987, the photos were upside down. Though the band joked that the extra eye belonged to the Ayatollah Khomeini, it actually belonged to their long-time promoter, Bill Graham.

About Ryan Viser:
-
Ryan Viser started playing the trumpet in Brazil at the age of 11. Growing up around the various beats of street drummers and sounds of Carnival, Viser developed a healthy appreciation for music at a very young age. Continuing with the trumpet after coming back stateside brought an introduction to jazz and improvisation that continued from middle school through his college years. With a natural creativity and ability to improvise, Viser has always enjoyed performing and creating various musical styles, and is well known for his work in the reggae band, Stiff Necked Fools (2009 – 2014), where he spent a great deal of time playing and touring the country.
-
A fan of electronic music, Viser began dabbling in the world of production, seeking to combine his electronic creations and aggressive trumpet style to form an innovative sound. In 2013, he launched his self-titled solo electronic trumpet act, Ryan Viser, and hasn’t looked back since. A mere year later, his track “Steppin Up” won the Management’s Choice Award in The Untz Challenge V, giving him the opportunity to shine on the stages of six major music festivals, including Electric Forest, Wakarusa, Sonic Bloom, and Summer Camp.
-
2015 was a breakout year and saw Viser joining up and touring the country twice with Filibusta, playing more festivals and shows, releasing his debut album, Metamorphosis, and also being named as one of the top ten artists in Future Funk by The Untz. His sophomore album, Louder and Louder, dropped in February 2016 and represents the next phase in the evolution of brass-infused bass music.

Feel Good Fridays: ALO's "Blew Out The Walls" June 30, 2017 11:05

Photo by Jordan Kirkland: Live & Listen

Just a few weeks back, we introduced a new weekly concept simply known as "Feel Good Fridays," which highlighst a different band/artist each week whose music simply brightens your day.  We all have those go to tracks that are so good they make you laugh. That's what we're going for. We want to share material from different genres that strikes that nostalgic chord and helps you kick off the weekend on the highest of notes.  And with that being said, let's talk about Animal Liberation Orchestra from Saratoga, CA.

Animal Liberation Orchestra, better known as ALO, is a California rock band currently signed to Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records label. They have released four full-length albums for Brushfire, as well as a number of prior independent releases including a film soundtrack. ALO consists of Zach Gill (Keys/Vocals), Steve Adams (Bass/Vocals), Dan "Lebo" Lebowitz (Guitar//Vocals) and Dave Brogan (Drums/Vocals). While childhood friends Lebowitz, Adams and Gill (aka, LAG) formed their first band (Django) in junior high school in 1989, ALO was formed in 1998. The band originally included a five-piece horn section, but was solidified as a four-piece with Brogan on drums in 2002.

ALO's college friendship with singer/songwriter Jack Johnson also rekindled during this time. ALO supported Johnson at The Fillmore in Denver in November 2002. Gill started sitting-in with Johnson and his band more frequently and Johnson also made appearances at ALO shows and would join the band to play each other's songs. The band would sign with Johnson's Brushfire Records in 2006.

While virtually any album or song from the ALO catalog would fit this segment perfectly, we were introduced to this band with the 2012 release of Sounds Like This. Many will remember "Falling Dominoes" was in heavy rotation with SiriusXM JamOn, and rightfully so. While this album includes some gems in "Dead Still Dance," "Storms & Hurricans," and "Cowboys & Chorus Girls," the one tune that really struck a chord was "Blew Out The Walls." The inspiring/entertaining story combined with some Garcia-esque licks from Lebowitz is just what you need to kick off the holiday weekend.  Check out a few recordings of this one below. Feel free to send future submissions for Feel Good Fridays by clicking here.

Veteran progressive jam rock band Umphrey's McGee is headed to Red Rocks this weekend, where they will perform their first ever three-night run. After many years of Red Rocks shows around this time of the year and a continued rise in demand, Umphrey's will treat its rabid fan base to what are sure to be three totally unique yet raging shows. While thousands of the UM faithful are currently en route to Colorado, those who can't make it are also in luck.  The band is partnering up with TourGigs once again this year to bring you all three shows in full HD. If you can't be there in person, having the option to watch this production from the comfort of your own couch isn't too bad of a backup plan.

Rebirth Brass Band To Play Gadsden's 'Rock The River' On July 14th June 29, 2017 14:36

-
The Gadsden Cultural Arts Foundation is set to host it's fourth annual "Rock The River" event on Friday, July 14th, and they're confident that this year will be their strongest showing yet.  Rock the River will take place at Coosa Landing, the city's boat launch between Memorial Bridge and the railroad trestle, on the river's east side.  This year's event will feature a performance from the Grammy-award winning Rebirth Brass Band from New Orleans.  Those who have had a chance to catch this band in the past will be the first to tell you that this is a show you don't want to miss.
-
Gates open at 6 pm. Soul Survivor with Alice Martin opens the show at 6:30 pm and Rebirth Brass Band starts at 8 pm. Lawn chairs and coolers are welcome and food vendors will be available. General admission tickets are $25 per person and are available at the Hardin Center and online. The funds raised by Rock the River go to support the programs and projects of the Hardin Center. Strollers are welcome, but everyone over 24 months old will require a ticket for admission.
-
-
-
A limited number of reserved VIP tables of 8 seats are available for $600. VIP tables include a premium reserved table, a VIP parking pass, and vouchers to be used at the food vendors. For more information or to reserve a VIP table, please call (256) 490-7227.
Coosa Landing is an outdoor venue on the eastern bank of the Coosa River between the Memorial Bridge and the railroad trestle.
-
We recently spoke with Tom Banks, deputy director of the Gadsden Cultural Arts Foundation, in order to learn more about the purpose behind this annual event, it's effect on the foundation and greater Gadsden community:
-
Folks in Gadsden continue to be very supportive of Rock the River and all special events in general. We were particularly pleased that people came from outside our area to hear Anders Osborne last year. We're hoping to have an even larger crowd of both local people and people driving in for Rebirth.
-
One of the best aspects of this event is that it's a relaxed atmosphere, not like so many other events with a bunch of rules about what you can bring with you and restricted areas. We just want everyone to come and have a great time. Rebirth is widely-known for putting on a hell of a show. We're looking forward to them getting people of all demographics in our crowd up and moving.
-
There will be two entry gates for the event. The gate for VIP ticket holders and for those with VIP parking passes will be near Dollar General. Parking for general admission is at the former K-mart next to Ronnie Watkins Ford. The other gate will be under the Memorial Bridge (Broad Street bridge). Those parking at the former K-Mart will be able to walk the short path behind Ronnie Watkins Ford and enter that gate. General admission tickets will be sold and honored at both gates.
-
Rock the River is presented by Pepsi and sponsored by Exchange Bank, Buffalo Rock,
Holiday Inn Express & Suites, Elisabeth Hardin, and Life Insurance Company of Alabama, and the City of Gadsden. In the event of rain, the concert will take place inside 210 at the Tracks, 210 Locust Street in downtown Gadsden.

Official Bio: Rebirth Brass Band
-
Simply put, The Rebirth Brass Band is an institution. Formed in 1983, the band has long since graduated from the streets of New Orleans to theaters and festivals all over the world. Rebirth is committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands while at the same time incorporating modern music into their show. Their signature brand of heavy funk has placed them among the world’s top brass bands and they are the hands-down favorite among the younger generation. In reference to the sometimes-stringent competition amongst brass bands, Offbeat magazine remarked, “…it’s clear that Rebirth, which boasts 10 albums and has traveled the world, is the band to beat (July 2001).

Watch Bob Weir Perform "Loose Lucy" At Relix Studios June 28, 2017 11:56

With just three shows remaining on Dead & Company's summer tour, it seems fitting that Relix has shared footage of a recent acoustic performance from Bob Weir. The Dead & Company frontman stopped by Relix Studios last fall and performed a special acoustic take on one of our favorite Grateful Dead originals, "Loose Lucy." While Weir and company have spent the past month playing many of America's biggest amphitheaters and stadiums, we can't get enough of a stripped down acoustic Bobby performance.  Full video of "Loose Lucy" can be watched below.

Bob Weir Officiates Backstage Wedding At Citi Field June 26, 2017 23:02

Bob Weir was a busy man this weekend, but that didn't stop him from officiating the wedding of a longtime friend backstage at Citi Field on Saturday night. Real estate investor William “Billy” Procida, who jumped on stage and performed with Weir seventeen years ago, confirmed that the two became great friends following that show. The ceremony, which was also attended by Dead & Company pianist Jeff Chimenti, lasted approximately 15 minutes, with Weir and Chimenti hanging around after to chat and take photos with the 50-60 guests in attendance.

Immediately following, the family and around 2,000 of their closest friends celebrated and occupied an entire section at Citi Field for Dead & Company's Saturday night show. “Seventeen years ago I jumped on stage and did an encore with [Weir] and we became great friends,” Procida told Page Six on Monday, adding he’s been in with the band ever since. Procida also noted that the ceremony was “beautiful and funny,” explaining that “at the end, [we] forgot to sign the marriage license. He was getting on a golf cart to go on stage and I had to chase him!” (via Page Six)

Watch The Revivalists Jam With Marcus King & Robert Randolph June 26, 2017 15:07

If you even casually keep up with the jam/festival scene, you already know that The Revivalists and The Marcus King Band are arguably the two hottest bands out there. Both bands have gained major national momentum in recent years, and neither seems to be slowing down anytime soon. On Friday night, the two bands, as well as Robert Randolph & The Familly Band, performed at Farm Bureau Insurance Lawn at White River State Park in Indianapolis for this year’s Rock on the River. During The Revivalists' headlining set, Marcus King joined the New Orleans rockers for a special take on "Soul Fight," while Randolph sat in during the band's hit song "Wish I Knew You." Both guest performances can be watched in full below via YouTube users prettydeadgirlx and Nick Blainey.

Watch Widespread Panic's Tribute To Col. Bruce Hampton At Red Rocks June 26, 2017 11:53

Sunday night saw Widespread Panic conclude another memorable three-day weekend at the Red Rocks Amphitheater, extending the band's streak to 54 consecutive sold out shows.at the famed Colorado venue. While the show featured many of the bands staples, such as "Tall Boy," "Rebirtha," "Airplane," "Greta," and "Driving Song," Panic also dusted off three bust outs which hadn't been played in over 10 years.  Early in the first set, the band busted out "Galleon," an instrumental which hadn't been played since July 21st, 2001. Another rare instrumental, "E on a G" came late in the second set and hadn't been played since November 16th, 2001.

When it came time for the encore, the entire band took the stage wearing "Grease" t-shirts in honor of the late Col. Bruce Hampton. After "Jack" started the encore, the band busted into Cream's "I'm So Glad," one of Hampton's favorite songs to cover. This was also one of the final songs performed at Hampton 70, just before the Colonel's passing. This was just the second time for the band to perform "I'm So Glad," and the first since July 8th, 2003. Footage of the tribute can be seen below via YouTube user MrTopdogger. The encore would then come to a close with a killer take on Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home." Next up for Panic is SlossFest in Birmingham, AL on Saturday, July 15th.

The super catchy dance tune has been already been covered by a wide variety of artists, including the Trey Anastasio Band. It only seems fitting that this eclectic group would ride this wave of momentum and collaborate with the PS22 chorus, a group of talented 5th graders from New York City’s Public School 22 in Graniteville, Staten Island. In recent years the chorus has performed with the likes of O.A.R., Stevie Nicks, Matisyahu and Michael Franti. See below to watch the recent performance of "Feel It Still."

Between the ever evolving and diverse musical line up with a curated blend of Jam, Dance Music, Rock, and Hip Hop, along with with the experiential art experience of the Spirit Lake installation, back dropped by the natural beauty of the Spanish Moss laden oak tree forest at Spirit of the Suwannee, there is no better Halloween party in the world. Five years ago, we set out to take The String Cheese Incident's annual Halloween bash, and grow it into a full scale festival. Now, we have the honor of producing an event that we'd personally want to be at. We've watched the process come and go full circle as we've grown together with the most loyal and dedicated fanbase we've ever witnessed in our collective career.
