The Vegabonds Return To Birmingham On Friday Night September 21, 2017 12:36
Nashville-based new south rockers The Vegabonds have had a busy summer, playing a slew of shows across the Midwest and all along the East Coast. Music fans in Birmingham, Alabama are in luck this weekend, as the band is scheduled for a big show at Saturn on Friday night (9/22). While the band is now based in Nashville, the Alabama roots run deep with this group. With a sound reminiscent of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers mixed with the grit and twang of the Allman Brothers Band, The Vegabonds give their fans a sensational performance with powerhouse guitar riffs and impactful songwriting night after night.
With their third European tour under the belt, three full-length albums including a fourth nearing completion, and a gravitational pull to their growing fan base down every American highway, the Vegabonds are on a musical pilgrimage to spread the gospel of pure, unadulterated New South Rock.
Some might assert that their sound is Americana, while others may consider them to be true rock ‘n’ rollers. Regardless of what fans like to call them, the Alabama-born, Nashville-bred quintet is pulling themselves up by the bootstraps just in time for 2018, forging ahead into the future by avoiding pigeon holes.
A group of five musicians with myriad influences between them, The Vegabonds are fronted by lead vocalist and songwriter Daniel Allen, with Richard Forehand (lead guitar/vocals), Paul Bruens (bass), Beau Cooper (keys/vocals), and Bryan Harris (drums) rounding out the quintet.

Although the music from each act is different, Pink Talking Fish has discovered that fusing the material together creates an amazing story. The epic emotion of Pink Floyd.... The funky, danceable layerings of The Talking Heads.... The multitude of styles, unique compositional structures and pure fun of Phish.... to merge these three into one gives music lovers a special experience.

Soul Mob
Soul Mob has tapped into a universal essence that excites DJs and clubbers across the dance divide. Silicone Soul praised their track ‘Foundation’; Davidson Ospina dropped it at Cielo; James Zabiela and Maceo Plex are rinsing their tracks; At the same time, darker excursions have been hammered by Slam and Nick Warren. The pair, despite being close friends in the northeast electronic music scene had not joined forces in the studio until 2009, when Pat Bedeau called on them to remix “Forgive Me” for his prestigious Strictly Music Label. The result was an entirely new sound that drew cues from the best of both artists. It was a futuristic and raw, synth-driven, underground masterpiece, the start of a new idea and the birth of Soul Mob.
BioLux

Performing under many monikers such as experimental improvisational trio Retrograde Inversion, cyborg concept project Mbreyo and the more recent Schlauting Thomas, this is where we find Thomas Bolton and Erin Zealous today.
Countless festivals, raves, clubs and themed events throughout the years have resulted in this latest project, BioLux, marrying visual and auditory elements with hard, funky Glitch Hop, electro/complextro and downtempo augmented with Lumen Nature Light Suits. Cycles' Debut Album 'Vacation' Promises A Bright Future Ahead September 17, 2017 21:27
Review by Jordan Kirkland: Live & Listen
Denver based power trio, Cycles, get ready to embark on a substantial fall tour for 2017. The action recently kicked off in Colorado with two Phish Dick’s after parties followed by Canyon Jam festival at the legendary Mishawaka Amphitheatre. Heading north out of Colorado, the trio recently completed a run of shows in Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho – supporting Kyle Hollingsworth (The String Cheese Incident) at the Knotty Pine Supper Club.
After an October weekend in New Mexico, tour brings them out to the East Coast for their first time. Teaming up with regional act, Formula 5, the trio will see stops in New York City, Burlington, Bridgeport and more before returning to Colorado with shows in Boulder, Steamboat Springs plus an additional date in Taos, NM.
Drawing influence from artists such as Rage Against the Machine, J. Dilla, Primus, Weather Report, and many, many more, Cycles fuses an eclectic blend of genres to produce a truly unique and cohesive sound. Although only two years old, Cycles have over 200 shows under their belt with tours extending across the entire U.S. Fresh off of a lengthy summer tour in support of their first full-length album, Vacation, the band is dialed and at the top of their game.
Follow Cycles on Facebook for all of the band's latest updates!
We have continued hear rave reviews about Cycles over the past year, and after a few months of spinning their first full-length album, Vacation, I understand why. The band's powerful sound is felt from the album's opening title track, as Patrick Harvey (guitar) leads the way with some dynamic, heavy riffs. Having been described as "psychedelic fusion rock," this notion proves itself true throughout this track. Tucker McClung (bass/vocals) holds down a super tight, funk-slap beat from start to finish on "The Aloe Parade," a track which also showcases the band's illustrative, quirky lyrics.
Michael Wood (drums) and Harvey lead the way through "Green," an exploratory instrumental tune which takes the listener on a smooth, mellow journey. "The Store" follows as another upbeat, explosive rocker which features some seriously impressive transitions and chord changes throughout. Sometimes you have to stop and remind yourself that this is indeed a three-piece band, as the playing on this album couldn't be any tighter. "Everything Must Go" starts off with a notably ambient vibe and progresses with some striking jazzy moments, ultimately landing on a perfectly catchy, rocking chorus. I could see this track being a legit contender for some SiriusXM JamOn playtime.
"Swing Bells" gives another glimpse at Cycles' impressive range, blending a steady, upbeat rhythm with heavy guitar riffs. The 'nature-esque' samples found towards the end of the track are a nice touch, and I can see this one having potential as one of the album's bigger jam vehicles. "Twilight" is another track which seems to have the perfect touch of mainstream sound, with Wood and McClung creating an unshakable rhythm, making way for more blistering guitar work from Harvey.
I feel confident in saying the "The Ruminator" may not only be the album's funkiest track, but possibly the most lyrically intriguing. There is also more than enough room for some tasty, exploratory improvisation within this 7-minute plus tune. The band clearly wanted to seal the album off with an exclamation point, as the final track "The Call" is a another fiery instrumental rager. This is one that could be utilized in the live setting as an explosive opener, as well as an emphatic set closer.
Overall, Vacation is distinctively entertaining from start to finish. While this is just the first full-length album for Cycles, one could easily mistake this as the work of a group of seasoned veterans. The precision and overall attention to detail is truly refreshing to hear from a band which has just surpassed its second official year. The future is undoubtedly bright for this young band, and we look forward to watching these guys to make waves across the jam/festival scene for years to come.
Stream Cycles' Vacation its entirety here:
- We recently had a chance to catch up with Cycles' Tucker McClung (bass/vocals) to learn a little more about the first full length album experience, as well as a few other exciting developments for the band. See below for our Q&A with Tucker, as well as the band's remaining fall tour dates and a few live videos.
So while it's hard to believe, Cycles is a three-piece band. You guys are based in Denver and have been going strong for two years now. How did you guys originally link up?
Tucker: (Michael) Wood and Patty (Harvey) had known each other for several years. They were both big fans of the band Phish and had aspirations of starting a band of their own. Then, Wood met me at an open jam in Fort Collins and asked me to move into a house in Denver to start Cycles. I guess you could say the rest is history.
Denver seems to have as hot of a music scene as any city. How does that fair for a newer band in 2017? You guys seem to have it figured out.
Tucker: Denver's music scene is indeed pretty hot, especially for the jams! The jam scene here was perfect for us. We've had a lot of help from the very beginning.
Let's talk about the new album, Vacation. This is the band's 3rd full length studio recording, correct? I always love hearing the progressions of each band's albums. What made this latest experience so unique?
Tucker: Recording in Blackhawk at Mountain Star Studios was really special for us. We recorded our first album in our basement jam space so being able to spend some time in a professional studio was a real treat. We got to sleep there too!
Tucker: We were incredibly thankful to be included in this year's Canyon Jam. I've heard about these bands from jam enthusiasts for years now, and it was an amazing feeling to share the stage with them. The Mishawaka is so special in its own right, so we were honored to be included!

BIG Something
A 6 piece powerhouse with a sound that is both unique and timeless, BIG Something fuses elements of rock, pop, funk, and improvisation to take listeners on a journey through a myriad of musical styles. It's no secret why this group has quickly become one of the most exciting new bands to emerge from the Southeast. Soaring guitars, synths, horns and alluring vocal hooks rise to the top of their infectious collection of songs and represent a sound that has caught the ears of such revered Summer circuit stalwarts as Galactic, moe., Robert Randolph, and even The B52s who have all tapped Big Something as direct support.
This past February the group released their 4th full-length studio album, Tumbleweed, which was recorded once again with the help of grammy nominated producer John Custer (Corrosion of Conformity). He has produced all of their albums including Truth Serum, which was named 2014 Album of the Year by The Homegrown Music Network, making Big Something the only band ever to win this award 3 times with 3 different releases (2010, 2013, and 2014).
Watch BIG Something perform "The Flood" with Jake Cinninger of Umphrey's McGee here:
The Heavy Pets
The Heavy Pets are a funky-ass rock and roll band from South Florida. Called "a living, breathing force of nature" by Relix magazine, they are known for their songcraft and powerhouse live performances. The band has been a mainstay on the national touring circuit for over a decade, and will release its fourth full-length studio album in September 2017.
The Pets are a seasoned live act, playing over 1200 shows across the country since their inception in 2005. The band's energetic, extended sets have been described as "full blown musical salvation" that embodies the sound of their Florida home, weaving together elements of indie rock, funk and reggae into a style that is uniquely their own.
The group became an instant Sirius radio sensation upon the release of their debut album Whale in 2007. The crossover sound on their self-titled release, named a "Top 10 Album of 2010" by The Huffington Post, propelled them into the periphery of mainstream music. 2011 saw the release of Swim Out Past The Sun, an acoustic affair featuring longtime Jerry Garcia collaborator David Grisman. Beginning in 2013, The Heavy Pets put out a series of EPs recorded at the legendary Power Station studios, and will release its fourth full-length album in September 2017.
Watch The Heavy Pets perform "Dewpoint" > "Jackie Bones" here:
Backup Planet
Rock ‘n’ roll epitomizes escapism in its purest form. It’s not just artistic anesthetization either, but rather a galvanizing force that inspires us to keep pushing through life’s trials and tribulations. That’s why we still listen to Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Rush, and countless others all these years later. It’s the same reason audiences will be talking about Backup Planet’s second full-length album, Reactions, for a long time to come. The Nashville, TN quartet—Ben Cooper [keys, vocals], Chris Potocik [drums, vocals], Gavin Donati [guitar, vocals], and Blake Gallant [bass, vocals]—write arena-size anthems echoing with progressive intricacy, funk swagger, and even a little metallic edge. Giving listeners an inspiring and invigorating aural haven, their moniker couldn’t be more apropos…
Watch Backup Planet perform David Bowie's "Fame" here:
Freekbass
Born and raised in Cincinnati, OH, Freekbass was an only child who initially wanted to be a magician. He later developed his own obsession for cartoon superheroes and comic books, relating to the underlying themes.
Living in Cincinnati exposed Freekbass to genres of music he may have missed otherwise. While most kids were listening to Nirvana and Green Day, he connected with the bottom-heavy sounds coming out of the boom boxes like Zapp and Midnight Star. While working in a music shop to pay off his first electric bass he had in lay-away, he began to study the classics of Larry Graham, Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, Parliament and Bootsy with a bass in one hand, and an MPC2000 in the other.
Freekbass has released six full-length CDs, including “Concentrate” with guests Bootsy Collins, DJ Spooky, Adam Deitch, and Steve Molitz, and “Junkyard Waltz” which includes guest appearances by Phish bassist Mike Gordon, guitarist Buckethead, keyboard wizard from P-Funk/Talking Heads Bernie Worrell, and is produced by funk legend Bootsy Collins. Also, national music DVD instruction company, The Rock House Method, recently released two Freekbass instructional DVDs “Learn Funk Bass with Freekbass (Level 1 & Level 2) “, and TrueFire.com just released the instructional DVD/download “50 Freekbass Licks You Must Know” . In 2010 Freekbass connected with DJ Logic, and Particle keyboardist Steve Molitz to form the funktronica trio, Headtronics.
Going into 2015 Freek has a lot of things on the table. He just released his next album , “Everybody’s Feelin’ Real”, which is produced by Duane Lundy (My Morning Jacket’s Jim James/Ben Sollee) and includes P-Funk/Rubberband keyboardist Razor Sharp Johnson, horn man Skerik, and Trey Anastasio Band vocalist/trumpet Jennifer Hartswick . Also, he was a part of this year’s London Bass Guitar Show in the UK giving a master class and performing. Plus he will be doing extensive touring with his mainstay funk group, “Freekbass & The Bump Assembly” which also includes funk legend Razor Sharp Johnson on keys/synths and George Clinton & P-Funk alumni Rico Lewis on drums. And recently, he signed with the esteemed label Ropeadope Records.
Watch Freekbass' music video for "Mama's Like A Cowboy" here:
lespecial
Hailed as a breakthrough act to watch in 2017, lespecial, based in Boston and upstate New York, have established themselves as innovators and tastemakers on their own unique trajectory. “Disguised as an average power trio from Boston, lespecial creeps around corners and reaches into the darkest depths of the absurd. lespecial is meticulous, creative and defiant; eclectic, multi-talented and driven. The band prides itself in extending the boundaries of musical ability, rebelliously laying waste to the limits of popular music.” (Ragin Randy Entertainment)
Labeled with such unique descriptions as “dark future groove” or “death funk” to “trance metal” or “haunted house party music”, it is tough to put one’s finger on this dangerous and determined trifecta’s distinct sound. A lespecial set brings their signature blend of psychedelic metal infused funk along with deep, thumping synths and 808s that will have your hips swaying as quick as your head banging. From the band’s origins as three friends in high school in the woods of Connecticut who shared a passion for building unique instruments and hitting them with drum sticks, through studying music at a collegiate level to now running their own music school and studio, The Music Cellar, in Millerton NY, Jonny Grusauskas (guitar/synth/sampler/percussion/vocals), Luke Bemand (bass/synth/percussion) and Rory Dolan’s (drums/samples) unique chemistry is what gives them their incomparable personality.
As Steve Morse, Boston Globe writer and Berklee College of Music professor, claims, “They are virtuoso players- and they really listen to each other closely, which is what raises them apart from today’s progressive wannabees”. After several, eclectic EP releases, their debut album, “Omnisquid”, released in 2015, finds the band “jumping through periods of hypnotic rhythms, catchy riffs, and synth grooves fit for a club… throw in a healthy dose of heavy metal and punk influenced guitar, and you have one of the most interesting new albums out there.” (Monkeygoose Magazine). ITDJENTS claims “For fans of King Crimson, Tool, Nine Inch Nails and Battles this is definitely the album for you”. The band’s expansive catalogue of singles and videos, including arrangements of everyone from Kanye West to Skrillex to Fela Kuti, is keeping all eyes and ears on lespecial as they prove in clubs and festivals nationwide why Relix Magazine claims “Amidst the rest of the noise, lespecial is the squeaky wheel that demands attention.”

Mr. B & The Tribal Hoose
Mr B began freestyling and recording mixtapes as a highschooler in Phoenix, AZ. He first came in to the public eye after viral youtube video "Wendys Drive Thru Rap". Soon after, he hit the road in support of acts like DMX and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. It did not take long for Mr B to realize he wanted to perform with more than just himself, and that's when the Tribal Hoose came along. With every member hailing from a different state, the group began as friends improvising live jams with Mr B as he freestyled at local house shows. They quickly realized they were on to something unique and captivating. The band has since grown and had the opportunity to perform at festivals with likes of Soulja Boy and Ying Yang Twins to name a few. They will B releasing their debut album in the Spring of 2017, followed by a tour to promote their album and movement.

The Stolen Faces
Grateful Dead cover band The Stolen Faces deftly capture the spirit of the Dead, covering a wide variety of songs from the band’s expansive catalog and delivering them with the sort of energy and spontaneity that might have you thinking you’re standing in the Fillmore West in 1971. Led by bassist Christian Grizzard, the group features guitarist Jack Silverman, drummer Matt Martin, and a rotating cast of some of Nashville’s top session and touring musicians.
The members of The Stolen Faces all share a love for the Dead, and for the freeform jamming and good vibes that music entails. The group puts a high premium on nailing the vocal harmonies, and has the instrumental firepower to take the extended jams into some seriously trippy sonic territory. In a short time, touring through Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas, they’ve begun to establish a reputation as one of the Southeast’s most solid and rockin’ Dead bands!

In addition to unveiling New Years plans, today marks the start of a massive Fall Tour for the group in Arcata, CA. Consisting of just short of fifty stops and covering ground from coast to coast, the extensive run maintains the band on a busy schedule through December. In addition to Sinkane, who joins throughout the already announced West Coast leg, other hand picked special guests include Con Brio, The Suffers, & Pimps Of Joytime. Amidst the many club and theater plays, including a hometown show at the newly opened Brooklyn Steel, are a handful of festival appearances including Whale Rock Music Festival, Joshua Tree Music Festival, LEAF Festival and Hangtown Music Festival. Turkuaz will be teaming up with Live for Live Music throughout the tour to provide behind-the-scenes coverage, real-time recaps, and more updates from the road.
They’ve become one of Brooklyn’s freshest exports, nine charismatic men and women brightly outfitted to have their colorful nature match their expressive voice, playing sounds that blend genuine soul and a potent funk that can’t be forced. It’s been a quickly addictive pulse and a reputation for a distinct, heavy footed “Powerfunk” that continues to steadily grow their presence. Since hitting the road hard in 2012, Turkuaz have a released a handful of albums, canvassed the US more times over, and continued to gather devoted listeners along the way. The band has made impactful appearances at Bonnaroo & Red Rocks, and filled rooms east to west from Terminal 5 in New York to The Fillmore in San Francisco. Balancing the conventional wisdom that has sparked their flame and using its heat to forge their own sword, Turkuaz is a band that can make anyone appreciate the side that feels familiar, yet remain intrigued by it’s ability to explore its own complex character comprised of nine striking personalities.
Live, Turkuaz is a rock band at the core, yet conjures up sweaty dance parties with the flick of an on-switch, a synchronized dance palette of vibrant colors, and eargasms that deliver pleasing punches one song at a time. That combination is a spectacle that’s hard to miss and hard to leave feeling anything short of quenched.

Be a part of Perpetual Groove history!
It's been seven years since Perpetual Groove released a full-length album. We've never been able to release an album on vinyl. Now is the time to remedy both of these issues and we want YOU to join us in the process of doing it! Perpetual Groove has always been for the people BY the people. You have supported us from day one and now we have an entire stack of never-before heard tunes and some road tested gems that must make their way to the studio!
With the support from all of you and this Kickstarter campaign, we'll be able to release an album in a way we have never done before. We'll be making videos of the process to share with you along the way, and will finally be able to release a vinyl recording for the first time ever!
We've got tons of great rewards for all of our backers...and if you aren't able to pledge right now simply sharing this post with your friends would still be a huge help. Plus it'll let more people experience "the Joy of Recording with Brock Ross."
Sincerely, Adam, Albert, Brock, and Matt - Perpetual Groove
Space Kadet's New EP 'Ultra Funkular' Hits On All Cylinders September 1, 2017 12:52
Photos by DV Photo Video
Words by Jordan Kirkland: Live & Listen
Atlanta-based jamtronic act Space Kadet has just released its latest studio work in the form of a five-song EP titled Ultra Funkular. Mastered by Papadosio's Anthony Thogmartin, Ultra Funkular perfectly captures the atmospheric, jazzy funk that this four-piece has become known for since its inception in 2014. One of our favorite elements about this band is its ability to navigate between improv jam and electronic boundaries, making way for a uniquely diverse final product.
The EP's title track features Louisiana-based trumpet player / producer Ryan Viser, who provides some additional adrenaline into an already impelling dance tune. Ultra Funkular's first single, "French Elevators," has an funky, old school Sector 9 to it, and the vocal samples from The Temptation's "I Wish It Would Rain" will undoubtedly catch the attention of any potential listener. Drummer Rohan Prakesh and percussionist Phil Ordonez hold down a wildly tight beat throughout "Junsuina," and Thomas Garret's jazzy guitar influence certainly shines throughout the track. The final track, "BTSD," seems the most electronic of the bunch but still maintains a notably melodic, groovy bass line (via Alex Etheridge) at its core.
Overall, Ultra Funkuluar more than lives up to its catchy title, and there's no doubt that Space Kadet offers something that just about any music fan can get down to. See below to stream the EP in its entirety. Space Kadet's next show will be at Imagine Festival at Atlanta Motor Speedway (September 22nd - 24th). More dates will be announced in the near future, including an STS9 after party in St Augustine, FL on October 7th with Artifakts at The Elk Lodge.
Listen to Space Kadet's 'Ultra Funkular' here:
Space Kadet explores many genres on the electronic instrumental spectrum with a deep emphasis on creating a spacey funky atmosphere and sound, always leaving the listener in a trance. The band taps into a variety of genres ranging from high energy driven electro-funk to hip hop infused drum and bass into trap, deep dub, house, break beats and more. Recently, the band has shared the stage with praised acts such as The Russ Liquid Test, Zoogma, Sunsquabi, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, The Werks, Govinda, Higher Learning as well as playing acclaimed festivals such as Purple Hatters Ball, Imagine Festival, Sweetwater 420 festival and Zen Awakening. Space Kadet came together to form an always changing, never ending, groovy space odyssey.
Space Kadet is: Rohan Prakash (Drums and Production), Alex Etheridge (Bass and Production), Thomas Garret (Guitar) and Phil Ordonez (Percussion).

Shortly after what became the band's first arena show, the make up date was announced for Thursday, August 31st (aka the night before Phish's annual weekend at Dick's). Mungion Has Van, Equipment, & Gear Stolen: Here's How You Can Help August 29, 2017 11:18
While on the road preparing for the their first headlining tour, Chicago-based jam band Mungion had its entire van stolen in the West Village of Detroit, MI. Unfortunately, the van contained all of the band's gear, including instruments, lights, amps, monitors, merchandise, and more. Between the band and equipment, the band estimates a total loss of $41,500. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched in an effort to assist with this devastating loss. Click here to learn more and consider helping Mungion during this time of need. If you have any info on the whereabouts of any of the stolen equipment, please contact the band's publicist. See below for the band's official statement via Facebook.

Last weekend, while on the road, we were staying out in Detroit and woke up to find our van and trailer stolen with all of our gear, merchandise, lights, and other valuable belongings in them. Although we are grateful that everyone is safe, our livelihood was taken from us in the blink of an eye. After going from door to door in the neighborhood we were able to track down some surveillance video that showed two men breaking in and stealing our van and trailer. Unfortunately, there was not much the authorities or anyone could do. After filing the police report and talking to neighbors we piled up in a hatchback and drove 6 hours to New York to play because the show must always go on!
Our very first tour as a headlining band is coming up in the next week and we need your help to get us back on our feet. Everything that was taken from us is estimated at around $50,000 total. Now more than ever, we need the help from our Mung Family to pick us back up and make the force even stronger! Any donations will help, big or small. We promise to reciprocate all of the positive energy and love through each and every show we play. We are able to do what we love because of ALL of you and could not imagine going through this journey alone. WE thank you in advance for all of your help, love, and support. We know that something like this will only make us stronger.
