Feel Good Fridays: Tank & The Bangas' Tiny Desk Concert June 16, 2017 11:46
It's been a hot minute since we've installed a new weekly feature, and what better time do so then Friday afternoon, when we're all inching towards the weekend. So without further ado, today we're introducing a concept simply known as "Feel Good Fridays," which will highlight a different band/artist each week whose music simply brightens your day. We all have those go to tracks that are so good they make you laugh. That's what we're going for. We want to share material from different genres that strikes that nostalgic chord and helps you kick off the weekend on the highest of notes. And with that being said, let's talk about Tank & The Bangas from New Orleans, LA.
Back in late February, Tank & The Bangas won this year's NPR Tiny Desk Contest, one which received well over 6,000 submissions. The panel of 10 judges even included the likes of Trey Anastasio (Phish). In the third year of this contest, NPR received its most submissions this year, multiples from every state. As a result of the band's big win, they were brought into NPR Studios in Washington D.C. for a studio performance, as well as a national tour with Lagunitas Brewing Company.
This New Orleans-based funk/soul group brings an element that we've never seen from any other band. Tarriona “Tank” Ball, who first gained attention as a slam poet, leads the group on some truly unique lead vocals, which vary from R&B, hip hop, and spoken word; all combined over a live band. At times, you'll feel like you might be watching a scene from a broadway musical, or at least we did. This group has continued to make big moves over the last four months, and we can't wait to see what the future holds. See below for Tank & The Bangas' NPR Tiny Desk performance, as well as their original audition video. Feel free to send future submissions for Feel Good Friday's by clicking here.
