Watch Herbie Hancock & Trey Anastasio Record At The Barn (2004) April 12, 2017 21:23

In celebration of the 77th birthday of the original funk pioneers, Herbie Hancock, we're taking a look back at some of our favorite footage from over the years. One of the most intriguing videos floating out there highlights Hancock with Trey Anastasio at "The Barn," the Phish frontman's famed recording studio in the Green Mountains near Burlington, VT.  The Barn was home to many Phish recordings in the late 90's and early 2000's, before it became home to the Seven Below Arts Initiative, a non-profit organization formed to advance arts education in Vermont. Other notable artists to record at The Barn include Béla Fleck, John Patitucci, DJ Logic, Toots & the Maytals, Tony Levin, Umphrey's McGee, RAQThe Slip, John Medeski, Jerry Douglas, Patty LaBelle, Leo Kottke, Jim Carrey, Addison Groove Project, and Touchpants.

This legendary recording session occurred back in 2004, when Hancock ventured to The Barn along with Steve Jordan (drums), Cyro Baptista (percussion), John Pattituci (bass), and Jennifer Hartswick (trumpet).  The video below showcases some amazing dialogue between the two, as well as the planning, arrangement, and recording of “Gelo Na Montanha” from Hancock's 2005 album Possibilities.
