Holly Bowling Featured On Tom Marshall's 'Under The Scales' Podcast April 19, 2017 11:57

-
-
Longtime Phish lyricist Tom Marshall has garnered much attention from the jam community in recent months with his new podcast, Under The Scales.  On the latest episode, Marshall sits down with renowned classical pianist Holly Bowling, who has become a household name in the jam/festival community in recent years for her piano interpretations of Phish and Grateful Dead tunes. According to Marshall, Holly Bowling stops by the studio to educate us musically — my piano has never sounded better!"
-
Specifics discussed in this episode include live interpretations of Phish's "Tweezer," "The Wedge," and "Sleep."  This podcast, which has featured many major names from across the Phish community (including Trey Anastasio), is a must-listen for all Phish enthusiasts.  See below to stream Episode 19 with Holly Bowling today.
-
-
Official Bio: Holly Bowling
-
Holly Bowling is a classically trained pianist who began playing piano at the age of five. There’s one major distinction, however, that separates her from other similarly studied musicians. That is Holly’s devotion to the legendary rock band Phish. Having attended over 300 shows by the Burlington-based quartet, she became obsessed by their famous rendition of “Tweezer” from Lake Tahoe on July 31, 2013. It led Holly to transcribe this 37-minute improvisational masterpiece note-for-note and arrange it for solo piano. The process, both painstaking and fulfilling, inspired her to transform other Phish songs and well-known live jams into solo piano interpretations.
-
Holly’s breathtaking renditions of Phish classics like “It’s Ice,” “The Squirming Coil” and “Harry Hood” serve not only as a tribute to the modern day kings of jam, but stand on their own as fully developed classical pieces. The past year has seen Holly expand her repertoire into the realm of the Grateful Dead, including an “Eyes of the World” based on the band’s spectacular exploratory June 18, 1974 performance at Freedom Hall. Using classical piano technique to reinterpret these jamband luminaries, Holly’s live performances infuse new with old, tradition with surreal, and creates a concert experience like nothing else in the music world.

Watch A High School Percussion Ensemble Perform Phish's "Divided Sky" April 17, 2017 14:31

As reported by JamBase last month, the Naugatuck High School Percussion Ensemble in Naugatuck, Connecticut has been working on a rendition of Phish's "Divided Sky" unlike any you've heard before. Trey Anastasio and Phish not only gave Naugatuck High School their full blessing for the performance, but long-time Anastasio collaborator Don Hart even helped out with the compositions. Fortunately for us all, videographer MKDevo has captured some amazing, multi-cam HD/4k footage of the ensemble's final rehearsal of the complex Phish original.  See below to watch the performance in full, as well as remarks from MKDevo explaining the amount of work that went into this project.

  • Quotes from videographer MKDevo via Facebook:

"You may have seen Naugatuck High School Percussion featured on JamBase last month, while working on their rendition of Phish's "Divided Sky". A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending their final rehearsal of the season, where I captured this version - the result of months of hard work.

Huge congratulations to everyone involved with this, especially my good friend, instructor Donny Binette, who had this vision many years ago and finally was able to see it through to completion. There are so many moving parts, as you can see in this video, and these kids did an incredible job!

The ensemble began learning the piece in January 2017. They typically rehearsed 2-3 times per week, anywhere between 3-7 hours, depending on the day. This recording was captured in the final week of their competitive season. They achieved a final score of 90.9 at the MAC Championships."

Trey Anastasio Dives Deep Into Phish Catalog At Solo Acoustic Show [Video] March 9, 2017 12:49

Phish frontman Trey Anastasio kicked off three-show solo acoustic run on Wednesday night at the Academy of Music in Northampton, MA. The buzz about this show began making the rounds quickly afterwords, as Anastasio worked through acoustic debuts of several tunes, such as "Discern," ""Walfredo," "Brian And Robert," "Steam," and "All Of These Dreams," as well as the newer tunes "Winterqueen," "Miss You," and "More."  There was much interaction between Anastasio and the audience throughout the show, as he provided song histories, commented on song choices, and the classic Trey banter that the Phish faithful all know and love.  The crowd even lent a hand on the absent vocal moments in "Limb By Limb."

Fortunately, YouTube user aerofan2007 has uploaded and shared full video of the show, which can be streamed in full below.  You can even use the 'next' arrow in the video to scroll through each song throughout the show.  The solo acoustic run continues on Friday night at Troy Savings Bank Hall in Troy, NY on March 10th, and concludes at The Music Hall in Portsmouth, NH on March 11th.

Looking Back: Phish Reunited On This Day In 2009 March 6, 2017 11:54

It's hard to believe that it has been a full eight years, but today marks the anniversary of the first night of Phish's return from a five-year hiatus.  After performing three songs together at the September 2008 wedding of their former tour-road manager, Phish announced that they would perform three reunion shows on March 6, 7, and 8, 2009, at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia.  Following the reunion weekend, the band played thirteen shows of a summer tour, including an inaugural concert at Fenway Park and headlining Bonnaroo 2009 in June with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, along with many others.  Phish has since continued to tour and sell out venues across the country, host three of its own festivals (Festival 8, SuperBall, MagnaBall), and begin annual traditions such as Labor Day weekend at Dick's Sporting Goods Park (Commerce City, CO) and a January destination weekend in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

Phish’s first public performance since Coventry on August 15, 2004 started with Fluffhead, a song not played since prior to the first hiatus on September 29, 2000 (70 shows). Also of note, several large, white balloons were hung in a circle around the coliseum, lit up by an additional central lighting rig; the balloons (save for a few casualties) would remain for the entire run. Trey introduced Fish as “Dad” during I Didn’t Know. Train Song was not played since May 23, 2000  (111 shows) and Grind was not played since December 30, 1998 (181 shows). During Bouncing, some of the balloons were dripped into the crowd. This show featured the Phish debut of Backwards Down the Number Line. YEM featured a false start possibly as a nod to the January 3, 2003 restarted version.

Runaway Gin's Andy Greenberg Featured On 'Under The Scales' Podcast February 20, 2017 22:44

Just two weeks ago, longtime Phish lyricist Tom Marshall joined Phish tribute act Runaway Gin on stage at The 8x10 in Baltimore for a special rendition of "Brian and Robert."  It certainly seems as if Marshall enjoyed his first Runaway Gin experience, as frontman Andy Greenberg became the newest featured guest on Marshall's podcast Under The Scales.  Greenberg is without question in good company, as Phish's Trey Anastasio was Marshall's featured guest on the past two episodes of the new podcast.  RJ Bee of The Helping Friendly Podcast can also be heard on 'Episode 13' with Marshall and Greenberg.

  • Runaway GIn recently announced a handful of 2017 spring tour dates (click here).

Listen to Episode 13 of Under The Scales with Andy Greenberg of Runaway Gin here:

With over 225 shows under their belt, Runaway Gin is the World's most active Phish Tribute Band. They play many Sundays at the Charleston Pour House and tour often.

The members of Runaway Gin are long time Phish fans who have united with the goal of creating musical moments inspired by Phish. The band's song list is constantly growing and their improvisational and communication skills are constantly developing independently and together. Like Phish, Runaway Gin will never play the same show or jam the same way twice making every show a unique experience and every moment pure artistic creation.

Runaway Gin strives to capture the essence of Phish's flagship live style of group improvisation known as "type-2" jamming as well as learning the composed segments of Phish's catalog with impeccable precision. Their success in these areas comes from constant live shows as well as rehearsals. The current moment is always the driving force in a Runaway Gin show giving the quartet a fresh and original sound during jams and shows as a whole.

Trey Anastasio Featured On Latest Episode Of "Under The Scales" February 6, 2017 15:12

Longtime Phish lyricist Tom Marshall has garnered much attention from the jam community in recent weeks with his new podcast, Under The Scales.  This week features easily Marshall's most high profile guest, as he and multi-platinum songwriter/producer Dan Kanter sit down with Phish frontman Trey Anastasio to discuss inspirations, set lists, guitars, song choices, and even a full run down on Trey's rig.  As one would imagine, this episode sparks all kinds of interesting topics, including the crossover between the pop and jam scenes.

For those who don't know, Kanter is the musical director and former lead guitarist for Justin Bieber, and has performed and directed countless other top-name pop stars.  This episode serves as part one of a two part series with Anastasio, so make sure to stay tuned for part two, which is scheduled for release in the near future.  For more information and all of the latest on Under The Scales, click here

Listen To Greensky Bluegrass' Matinee Halloween Set From Las Vegas November 4, 2016 12:33

The festivities surrounding Phish's four-night run in Las Vegas last weekend were abundant to say the least, with a multi-night Disco Biscuits run, a late night Twiddle show, and two shows from Greensky Bluegrass all going down at Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas. Similar to the 2014 Halloween weekend, Greensky performed both a late night show on Sunday night (Monday morning), as well as a Monday afternoon matinee prior to Phish's three-set Halloween show.  In the spirit of the "musical costume" that proceeded their show, Greensky decided to perform an entire set of tunes that Phish has covered at some point over the years.  This set was highlighted by several of the classic Phish covers, such as "Boogie On Reggae Woman," "Paul and Silas," "Funky Bitch," "A Day In The Life," "Nellie Kane," "Rock and Roll," and "The Ballad Of Curtis Lowe," as well as the much more rare covers of "Time > Breathe," "Light Up Or Leave Me Alone," "We're An American Band," "Ride Captain Ride," and "Sweet Emotion."  Fortunately, full length audio from this performance has surfaced below, and can be streamed below.

Watch Phish Perform David Bowie's Entire 'Ziggy Stardust' Album In Vegas November 2, 2016 00:09

Monday night marked another highly historic milestone for veteran jam band Phish, as the band performed David Bowie's The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars in its entirety at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.  This would be Phish's first true musical costume since 2010, when the band took on Little Feat's Waiting For Columbus at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.  This set would also feature a nine-piece backing band, which included Trey Anastasio Band's Jennifer Hartswick as one of three backup singers, as well as a six-piece string arrangement.

Trey Anastasio, Page McConnell, and Mike Gordon each took on his fair share of lead vocals, and drummer Jon Fishman even jumped in the mix for a verse on the opening track "Five Years."  The tribute was one of serious nostalgia, as Gordon handled vocals on "Starman," McConnell took center stage for "Ziggy Stardust," and Anastasio revealed his true, inner frontman for "It Ain't Easy" and "Rock & Roll Suicide."  We could go on and on about this set, but fortunately, video footage as surfaced via YouTube user Tom Rowles for your viewing pleasure.

Watch Phish perform David Bowie's entire "Ziggy Stardust" album in Las Vegas here:

According to Anastasio and McConnell, the decision to pay tribute to Bowie in 2016 was a challenging, yet easy decision:

“It was a conversation we had pretty quickly,” said Anastasio. “‘Oh, Halloween is coming up. Let’s do Ziggy Stardust.'”
-
“You can’t point to anyone else in rock who was so relevant for so long,” added keyboardist Page McConnell. “It’s hard to know how to honor them all, [but Ziggy on Halloween] felt right. And there are no weak links – no fluff, no filler. Every sonic detail is intentional, more than on any other album we’ve covered.”

Listen To Phish's New Studio Album 'Big Boat' via NPR Music September 29, 2016 13:04

Veteran jam rock band Phish recently announced the release of it's 13th studio album, Big Boat.  Very few details of the album were provided at the time, but we have since learned much more.  While Phish has officially released two singles, "Breath and Burning" and "Blaze On," they are now allowing fans to stream the album in its entirety via NPR Music (see below).  Fans will recognize tunes such as "Blaze On" and "No Men In No Man's Land," which were both debuted in the summer or 2015, as well as "Tide Turns," "Waking Up Dead," and "Breath and Burning," which were all debuted over this past summer's tour.  We can't help but notice the absence of two of our favorites from 2016, "Let's Go" and "Ass Handed," but we're keeping our fingers crossed for another potential "bonus album" similar to Party Time after the release of Joy in 2009.

Big Boat was produced by Bob Ezrin, who also produced Fuego, as well as many legendary albums including Pink Floyd’s The Wall, KISS’s Destroyer, Alice Cooper’s School’s Out and Peter Gabriel’s Peter Gabriel I. The LP was completed during Phish’s Summer Tour as guitarist Trey Anastasio mentioned the band had completed the album prior to dedicating "Sing Monica" to Ezrin, who was in the crowd, at Bill Graham Auditorium in San Francisco, CA earlier this summer.

Anastasio elaborated on the album in an interview with Rolling Stone earlier this summer.

“We’re kind of all over the place, flying down to Nashville to work, and then I’ve been doing a lot of work on overdubs at Avatar, which is in Manhattan, and then we go to Burlington, and worked at the barn, and we’re even working at Page’s house and Mike’s house a little bit,” Trey said.

He added, “Page brought some great songs, Mike brought some great songs, Fish brought some great songs. I’ve got a lot of new songs. And everybody’s just diving in, in a unified way.”

Just last week, veteran jam rock group Phish announced the release of its 13th studio album Big Boat.  Very few details of the album were revealed at the time, but we are learning more about the album, which is due out on October 7th, with each day.  Earlier today, the band released "Breath and Burning," the first official taste from Big Boat.  Fans who followed the band's 2016 summer tour will be familiar with "Breath and Burning," as the song was debuted at Klipsch Music Center (Deer Creek) in Noblesville, Indiana on June 28th and was performed a total of six times over the summer.

"I wrote this song on the beach after our three-night run in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico last January," Anastasio tells NPR Music in an email. "I loved watching the faces of all the people dancing and splashing in the ocean while we played. I kept thinking, 'This will all end sooner or later, one way or another. So I'm gonna enjoy every last second of it while we're still here. I'm not gonna wave away the dessert cart on the Titanic. I want to be like that string quintet that kept playing while it sank."

Listen To Phish's New Mystery Song From The 'Big Boat' Trailer September 10, 2016 14:15

While very few details regarding Phish's 13th studio album Big Boat have been released, pieces of the puzzle are being put together one at a time.  The latest info we have gathered is regarding the "mystery song" which is playing in the trailer Phish used to announce the album title and release date for Big Boat.  The title of the song is unknown, but the Page McConnell-led tune was performed earlier this summer during soundcheck at The Mann Center in Philadelphia, PA on June 29th.  Listen to the performance below via YouTube user Andrew Grey, and stay tuned for all of the latest info on Big Boat.

Phish Announces 13th Studio Album 'Big Boat' Due Out October 7th September 7, 2016 19:56

Just three days after Phish's summer tour closer in Colorado, the band has announced very limited details on it's 13th studio album, 'Big Boat', due out on October 7th.  The album takes its title from the Jon Fishman-led tune "Friends," which includes the line "We're on a big boat, like the ones our forefathers sailed." While very few details have been unveiled, the band released a video which revealed the cover artwork and a sample from a song which has not been performed.  'Big Boat' will be the band's first album since the Fuego in 2014, and it will be released via the band's label JEMP Records.
